COMMITTEE REPORTS
· Diversity committee, Ed Vesneske, Jr.
- Evening panel on Special Ed/Inclusion well-attended.
- Ed sees need for some specialized training to be made available to volunteers on issues related to IEP. 20% of SB students have an IEP.
- 3 more evening meetings planned based on theme of “How do we talk to our kids About...”, however Ed feels the committee needs a staff “anchor” in order to make these events move forward.
- Sally contributed that she sees a need for a school wide program to address some prejudices she has seen expressed by her students, specifically against homosexuals.
- Melanie points out the role of media literacy. A suggestion is made to possibly take one of the 6 weeks devoted to WEP, and have students engage in some curriculum that addresses these issues.
· Communications, Pam Lauritzen
- Starting surveys of SB families with Survey Monkey, a free program, limited to 100 respondents.
· Legislative Liaison, Kelly Bryant
- Assignment maps have moved from proposed to recommended. Vote will be on 11/18 – get your comments in now!
- Report on 11/3 School Board Works session: Topics were what the transportation plan will consist of, and the creation of a “purple zone” for kids in the immediate vicinity of a school, this could be used as a second tiebreaker in assignments.
- Letters with school assignments will be mailed in late February to all families.
- Michael DeBell is aware that, as a Board, they need to consider the need for programmatic pathways, which alternative education would fall into.
· Garden committee, Drew Derby
- Planning butterfly garden!
· HEALTH committee update, Caleb Bantagreen
- Continuing to work to get hand sanitizer in more places around school, to give kids more opportunities to de-germ, especially where sinks aren't readily available; would like to have it in the lunch room but need to work with administration to ensure it is safe for the kids, especially little ones.
§ PIE, Julie Metzger returning in March. Topic: How Kids See Themselves, touching on concepts of body image.
· HOSPITALITY committee, Caitlin Racey
- Spaghetti Feed has fallen off the calendar. Let Caitlyn know if you would like to brainstorm event ideas with her!
