PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

HelloSalmon BayFamilies:

Don’t forget: EARLY RELEASE DAY (2 HOURS EARLY AT 12:45).  While your students leave early, our teachers will assemble for their collaborative work in project based learning.  Each study group will be presenting to the whole group to fill us in on their work in the area of project based learning, and the entire group will reflect on our next steps towards deepening this kind of learning at Salmon Bay.

I know I speak for the entire staff when I give you a big THANK YOU for all your notes of appreciation, and all the wonderful food and goodies, you provided for our teachers last week.  Teachers do work long hours, long beyond their contract, and would do it no matter what, but it always feels good when someone notices.

This is a wonderful time of year—very rich and full—with classes heading off to camp, students doing culminating projects, special events for the whole school—it’s all amazing—and there are some good examples both last week and this.  I hope you had the opportunity to see school play, The Matchmaker, wasn’t it fun?  This week, there is a great example of project based learning: 6th grade Biography Night.  Don’t miss it!  Students have all researched a person of their choice, and will “perform” as in a living museum, spread out among many classrooms and library, all on the second floor.  You can wander among the locations, go up to a student and “push” their button to begin,  and they will spring into life and educate you about their person—oh, and the best part—they will be in costume to assume the persona of their research subject. Dave and Bill’s classes are off to camp Thursday and Friday—could the weather be any better?

Have a great week!

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Have you gotten into the groove of May yet?

The groove of MR. G– There are still spots for parents and kids to participate in Mr G’s Family Fun Fitness night (an auction sign up event) this Friday starting at 6:30 in his gym.  $10 per participant.

Email me if you are interested.  Checks made out to FOSB.  Bring your sneakers and your smile.

The groove of Bike Month – This Friday is it bikers.  The official day when everybody bikes everywhere.  You have been training all month to officially take over the streets.  When you get to school, there will be apples and a lot of folks on bikes.  Be patient here at school, wear your helmet, watch for cars, watch for kids, be safe on your ride in and have a great start to the day.  The lower playground will have spots to help with bike storage.  Speaking of storage…

The groove of early release– Where will we store all those kids whose parents accidentally forgot that it was early release on Wednesday?  In our kindly office of course.  Don’t forget, school’s out at 1:30 this Wednesday.  Speaking of Wednesday, which comes after Tuesday…

The groove of our all school parent FOSB meeting/Volunteer Appreciation – Please join us on Tuesday night to learn about our upcoming director slate, our parent body budget, bylaw discussion, and a summary of the year.  We hope to see you there.

The groove of teacher appreciation– Dang, thanks to you, all of our staff got into a groove of heading up to the 3rd floor teacher’s lounge and enjoying each other, time and wonderful food, gifted by wonderful parents.  Thanks for all of the love and care.  All of your dishes are outside my office.

The groove of bouncy balls– Well they are not groovy, they are bouncy but WE NEED THEM.  We have no pogo balls for our kids at recess.  We are looking for donations of bouncy balls, available at Fred Meyer or Top Ten Toys.  Please deliver them to Megan, Caitlin, Anthony or the main office. Thx

The groove of being a middle schooler at Salmon Bay– Hey 5th graders!! Hopefully you all received your official letter to join us next Monday night, 7 PM for your personalized welcome to 6th grade.  It is a social.  It is fun.  It is very worthwhile to come to. You get to see friends, old and new.

The groove of throwin’ a potluck – Save the date.  It is back.  Our Aloha Potluck.  We are going to throw a potluck party for the whole school this year to wrap up the year, say Aloha to a few staff (sadly myself included) and celebrate the process of moving up to the next grade.   More details are below.  Suzanne Waller is leading the charge and needs help, that she has listed below.  Aloha!

The groove of rock and roll– The counts are still coming in from our most recent Rock fer FOSB event.  Thanks to all of the singers, players and enjoyers!

Lastly, hopefully you all received the information regarding the transportation update and how the start times for next year, will most likely be what they are for this year.

Also, we have a new face around Salmon Bay.  Our daytime custodian, Binh, has moved to the evening schedule and Jan Opland, has joined us during the day.  Thanks to Binh and Jan for all they do.

Lots to groove on.  Enjoy that sun
Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

HelloMiddle SchoolFamilies-

2 hour early release this Wednesday 5/16-  Your students will be coming home 2 hours early this Wednesday so that their teachers can participate in professional development activities with their colleagues.

Thanks for all you did to appreciate our staff last week!    As always the staff was bowled over by the outpouring of appreciation that was showered on them all last week.  I had countless people say how lovely it was to gather together as a group and eat and visit during their lunch which is something their busy schedules don't allow them to do very often.  They wanted me to be sure and let you know just how much they appreciated your appreciation!  If you have dishes you need to pick up they are on the table outside my office.

Annual FOSB Parent meeting is tomorrow Tuesday 5/15 at 7 PM in the cafeteria-  Please join us for our annual meeting as we elect directors for the next year and say a thank you to all our amazing volunteers.

Please help us welcome our new daytime custodian, Jan Opland.   Binh is moving to the afternoon shift and Jan will now be taking care of all our daytime needs.

Playground balls needed-  Our playground ball bin is empty and we still have 6 weeks left of school.  We could use playground, soccer, basketball and footballs if you could donate any.   Please leave them in my office and I will get them to the ball bin or you can give them to Anthony.

Bike to school day is Friday 5/18!  If your child is biking to school that day please remind them to take extra care as there will be lots of 2 wheeled traffic. For safety they need to remember to get off and walk their bike once they reach school grounds.

Thanks and have a great week,

Caitlin

FOSB NEWS:

 Next FOSB Meeting: May 15th

At our next FOSB meeting, tomorrow night, Tuesday May 15th, we will elect officers for the upcoming school year. We still have seats open for Directors. FOSB Directors agree to attend our monthly meetings and stay current on issues facing the school, which provides continuity as we move through our year. It is a great way to learn about issues at Salmon Bay and work with other parent volunteers. If you have questions or are potentially interested, please contact Jodi Russell (reddsell@comcast.net).

Our next FOSB meeting also serves as our annual meeting. We would like to recognize individuals who have volunteered this past year...please join us!

LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION

SalmonBayparent, Zara Kublin, is helping organize the following event: a panel discussion about what is going right with public education. We have as much to learn from our successes as from our mistakes, yet we talk almost exclusively about what’s going wrong. We can’t help public education if we don’t know what works. Please come and join the discussion with our panel of educators.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

AnnualSalmon Bay SchoolRetreat!  Saturday May 5 –9:00-1:00—Salmon Bay library.

Every year the parent group, FOSB, has hosted a Salmon Bay Retreat in the spring to take some time and reflect on the “big picture” ideas for our school.  This year we will be talking, among other things, about how to make project based learning an even deeper and more substantial part of academic life at Salmon Bay.  Please join us!  This is a fun event—people bring snacks—and we talk, focus and try to plan for next year.  I hope you will come join in!

Also, in the next few weeks, teachers will be re-organizing student groups to move on to the next grade next year. If there are any extraordinary circumstances that should be considered during this process, please write a letter to explain this to me, and I will pass it along.  Sometimes parents have thought this is a time to request a particular teacher, so I would remind you that we do not ask for teacher requests. The staff spends many hours doing the reorganization into new classes in a way that is designed to best meet the individual needs of every child, as well as the best group dynamics. Please trust the judgment of our teachers—they know our students extremely well. Letters must be sent by May 14.

And a reminder: These are  MSP assessment days, so please be on time every day this week!

Take care,

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks April 30, 2012

K-1 class: Polar Bears were in full swing. It was impressive to read so many amazing facts about Polar Bears and the Northern lights. You know students are learning when they are talking about Polar Bears at lunch recess.

Elementary PE: We are still fully engrossed in the wheels unit, students have been practicing biking safely and I know a few classes also received training in soccer from a guest teacher from Seattle United.

We also had the opportunity to have a number of classes enjoy an assembly with Jenni Reed, an Olympic cyclist, who inspired our students to participate in Bike to School this month.

4th/5th graders from Brian and Nicolette’s classes had almost a week at Islandwood learning about the great outdoors.

Middle SchoolPE: Students have started discussing their FLASH unit and we have had a guest teacher from the district, Lisa Love and our very own counselor, Anthony, assisting Tim in their lesson.

Middle School Dance: Thank you to all the parent volunteers and to Jen Boget for the organization and time they put in for the success of the Middle School Dance. It was a great success, students had fun and so did I…love that electric slide dance…

Tidbits you may not know…..

MSP is here. Our schedules in all grades will be impacted slightly since we share so many resources and so many different spaces.  Please help your children feel relaxed and prepared for the MSP by making sure that they get to school on time with their usual quota of rest and exercise, and that they’ve had a good breakfast in the morning.

Bike to School-With the increasing nice weather, and the promotion of Bike To School month/day we have more people biking to school. Please be sure to watch for cyclist as you approach the school.

 Cyclist please be sure:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Ride with traffic safely, use your hand signals
  • Watch for cars and pedestrians
  • Get off your bike and walk it once you are on the sidewalk near the school
  • Please don’t ride your bike  in the alleyway
  • Be mindful where  you lock up your bike

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

THREE CHEERS FOR….

  • Nancy Gruber, Linda Illman and all of our poets.  From wee to over thirtee, smiles were created by gentle words that were spoken.

  • Patty Maier and the bingo-ettes for hosting a fun way to multi task with numbers and dots for Bingo night.

  • Audrey Lee and her thousands of volunteers.  Audrey was delighted with the combo events (Poetry/Bingo) that helped boost our sales at the Spring bookfair to over $6000.   So thanks to Secret Garden, 25% of those proceeds will go back to our library to purchase books.   Linda is happy, Audrey is ecstatic, kids are reading and life is good.  Thanks

TWO NOTES ABOUT….

  • THIS SATURDAY AT SCHOOL IN THE LIBRARY IS OUR FOSB ANNUAL RETREAT

Our annual retreat is an upcoming opportunity to give more time and thoughtful discussion to topics that impact and affect our school, community, teachers, and students.  All are welcome to join us.  We will begin gathering at 9:00.   Email Jodi Russell if you plan to attend – reddsell@comcast.net   The agenda for the retreat is attached.

  • NEXT WEEK, ROCK FER FOSB 12is coming up on Saturday night, May 12th .  Hard to believe that we have been entertained by our amazing group of talented parents 11 times.  This one will be no different.  This is a Rock a roke event so plan to attend at 8:00, or later, for some fine tunes from some talented folks

ONE BIG THANK YOU TO…

Our teachers and staff.  Next week is teacher/staff appreciation week and the schedule of what we are planning is below.    Feel free to join us in showering our staff with baked goods, coffee treats, yummy lunches and kind thoughts.

Thank you for all your efforts, large and small, that make Salmon Bay a great place.
Megan

TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION SCHEDULE OF FUN, FOOD and SURPRISES!

Teacher appreciation is a day in some schools, but at Salmon Bay we stretch the appreciation out for the whole week.   Our goal is not to expect any one family to participate in all of the treat days, but to give lots of opportunities if a particular day works for you.   One of the highlights of teacher/staff appreciation week is the chance for all the teachers, K-8, to eat lunch and gather together in the 3rd floor staff lounge.  The oohs and aahs that come from the teachers in gratitude of everything parents do during appreciation week is lovely, loud and often.  Let us know if you would to help out with any of the following.  Check out our newest treat day…. Thursday.  We will be treating teachers to brown bag lunches and giving the teachers to opportunity to pick a surprise lunch, lovingly made by a Salmon Bay family.

Breakfast Bar Monday- We need volunteers to help clean the staff room and donate yummy and healthy breakfast treats or fruit for our staff.   Email us if you would like to bake some treats and share them with your fav teachers.

Barista Tuesday-   We need volunteers to help pick up and deliver coffees.  Email us if you can help.

Potluck  Wednesday-Bring in your favorite delicious potluck item by 11 am so our teachers can enjoy lunch on us!  Please be sure to label dishes so any allergens can be noted.   We will happily accept vegetarian and non vegetarian.  Email us with your item.

Brown Bag Thursday- This year we are trying something new and fun.   Make a brown bag lunch for a teacher.  We will give some parameters (meat, vegetarian, gluten free) and families can have fun from there.  How cool for a teacher to open up a surprise lunch and realize that someone packed them their favorite bologna and cheese sandwich.  (well perhaps not bologna J)  Email us if you would like to join the brown bag brigade.

Savory Friday- Soup and Salad provided by the Volunteer Coordinators.  Parents get the day off helping (unless you really want to)

Email Megan at mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org to let us know what you would like to do.  You can also bypass us altogether and take care of your favorite teacher on your own.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello and Welcome to May!

Thanksto everyone who helped to make the dance before Spring Break such a good time!  I was on vacation early but Jen Boget took over for me and she  and all the other volunteers made it a smashing success!   I know how much the kids appreciate being able to have these gatherings and we definitely could not do it without all the help.

Staff Appreciation Week is next week, May 7-11th-  We have a whole schedule of fun events and need your help to make them happen.  See above my note for the schedule for the week and reply to this email if you can help out.

MSP testing starts tomorrow-   Make sure your student gets plenty of rest and fuel so they can sail through the testing week.

FOSB Annual Retreat is Saturday 5/5 at Salmon Bay from 9-1 PM.

Congratulations to all that participated in Spring Reign!   This was my first year at the annual Ultimate Frisbee tournament in Burlington and I have to say how impressed I was by all the kids who played 3 games a day and had a great time and a fabulous attitude win or lose!   The coaches, led by Sam Olson, have my gratitude and admiration for all the hard work they did to make this happen.  It was a super fun weekend and I look forward to next year.

Congratulations to our Secret Garden Bookfair!!   With all the purchases made over last week we sold around $6000 worth of books which will bring much needed resources into our library.   Thanks to Audrey and all the volunteers who worked so hard!

Rock For FOSB 12 is Saturday May 12th, Ballard Eagles at 8 PM!    Rock a Roke returns so come down and sign up to do karaoke with a live band!  A great fundraiser and always a really fun night.

Have a great week and thanks for all you do,  Caitlin

8thGradeHigh SchoolRegistration

On Tuesday, May 8th at 1pm-1:50, high school counselors from the district will be coming to Salmon Bay to register our 8th graders to high school classes.  The purpose of the “meet and greet” is to give our students an opportunity to hear a little about enrolling in some of the extra-curricular activities available and to sign up for elective classes.  Please refer to any information sent to you by your child’s assigned high school on information on enrolling into Honors courses or IEP services.  Please direct any questions you have on the event to me.  Thanks, Anthony Malaki, Counselor, 252-1742 or eamalaki@seattleschools.org.

8THGRADE CAMPINFORMATION:  PLEASE READ

Dear Families of 8th graders,

Your student should be bringing home a packet of materials for 8th grade camp!  We go to Camp Orkila with the 8th graders June 5th to June 8th.  Please be on the lookout for the packet.  It is due back to your student’s homeroom teacher on May 4th.

8THGRADE PROJECT UPDATE

Students should turn in fnal drafts on Monday or check in with Melanie about why it isn't ready.  Last Thursday we looked at sample powerpoints and this Thursday we will skip our lunch meeting due to testing.  This Friday or next Thursday during lunch we will look at sample boards and work on a presentation plan.  Teams are deciding how/when presentations will happen and our final evening celebration will be on Friday evening, June 15, time and format to be decided.  Please contact Melanie if you'd like to help with the planning for this event!

Salmon Bay (Elementary) and the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation invite you to join our elementary team for Bike to School Month, May 2012

May is Bike to School Month, designed to encourage bicycle commuting, mentor newriders and foster a love of bicycling.  When you bike to school with your child you:

  • Help your child become a safe, knowledgeable and independent cyclist.
  • Create daily exercise habits that help keep your child active and healthy.
  • Reduce car traffic and air pollution.

We envision participation in Bike-to-School Month as a family project, one that may also introduce parents to the fun of cycling with their kids! Everyone who rides at least once wins a prize!

So, how do you participate?  It's easy! Look for a Bike to School RSVP/permission form from your school coordinator Marian Wagner and turn in to the BTS box in the office or to Marian by April 30th.  Once you turn that in, we will give your teacher the Bike to School Passport/Calendar to take home to keep track of your rides. At the end of the month, you will need to turn in the Passport/Calendar to the BTS box in the office or to Marian by Monday, June 4 to be eligible for prizes. For more information check out Cascade's website at: http://www.cbcef.org/bts/index.html.

FOSB NEWS:

We will be electing officers and directors at our May FOSB Meeting. If you are interested in becoming a director, please contact Jodi Russell (reddsell@comcast.net). Directors agree to attend monthly FOSB meetings and stay on top of current issues.  It’s a great way to get to know other parents and hear a bit more about what goes within our school. Should our parent body be unable to reach consensus around an issue, the directors will be called upon to vote.

In the LAST MINUTE category: the Washington State PTA convention is being held at the Doubletree Hotel-Seattle Airport, Seatac this weekend - Friday, May 4 - Sunday, May 6.

If you are a member of any PTA you may register to attend. You don’t need to attend all of the convention. The reason I bring this to your attention (at the last minute!) is because the PTA will be voting on some important and controversial political issues. If these issues are adopted they will become part of the WSPTA’s legislative lobbying platform. Many people don’t know that PTA spends members’ dues on political lobbying, but they do - mostly for causes we all support like more funding and early learning opportunities. However, they are increasingly taking on controversial issues such as charter schools, teacher evaluations, and standardized testing.

At this convention we will be voting on a pro-charter resolution asking that PTA advocate for introducing charter schools into the state of Washington. We will also vote on a resolution about PTA spending on staff positions. These are sit-up-and-take-notice issues.

Again, I apologize for the last minute announcement, but, as Salmon Bay is not a member of PTA, it slipped my mind that some of you still might be members at other schools. Also, if you have friends at other schools, ask them if they’re going.

It’s not too late to register here http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/con12/index.html. Some or all of the cost may be covered by your PTA. [Note: only voting delegates are actually allowed to vote on the issues - please contact me if you’d like to learn how you can become a possible voting delegate.]

The nice weather may get you thinking about your class camp trip.  Already the 5th graders are off this week for their outdoor education experience. ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Welcome back to the last 9 weeks of school SalmonBay.

Things get cooking from here so enjoy all that is planned for you!!

SPRING BOOKFAIR– Our Secret Garden Spring bookfair begins tomorrow and is hosted in the library during the day and during 3 of the evening’s events this week.  The Secret Garden Bookstore in Ballard sets up a mini version of themselves where kids can peruse new titles and well loved favorites all week in our library.   Our library receives 25% of the entire weeks’ sales towards purchasing books to keep our collection current and interesting.  Kids are welcome to visit the bookfair before school, during lunch and afterschool.  Most all classes make their way through the bookfair at some point.  Books are not placed on hold at the bookfair but rather kids are encouraged to write down wishlists to show to their parents.   Our bookfair coordinators still need lots of help during the day to run the register and chat with kids about books. Most shifts are just one hour long, but we need lots of hours covered.   The sign up board is in the main hallway.  Check it out and email me and let me know what you can volunteer for.

POETRY NIGHT(S)– This Tuesday and Wednesday evening(April 24th/25th), Poetry nights will be hosted by our librarian, Linda and Nancy Gruber, poet extraordinaire.  This sweet low key event has all the elements of a soft evening in spring; poetry, kids, flowers, smiles.  Join them for the fun at 7:00 either night.  The bookfair will be open both evenings for perusal and purchases

BINGO NIGHT– This Friday night, as a great anchor to our bookfair and an opportunity to gather and yell numbers out really loud, our Parent Ed committee (PIE) will be hosting a free Bingo night.  All ages are welcomed and encouraged to play and participate.  Prizes will be awarded, including Secret Garden gift certificates and treats larger than your head.  Fun starts at 7:00 in the cafeteria.  This event is NOT a drop off event and all kids must be accompanied by an adult.  Loose children will be given away as prizes.   Tee hee.

FOSB ANNUAL RETREAT– Our annual retreat is an upcoming opportunity to give more time and thoughtful discussion to topics that impact and affect our school, community, teachers, and students.  All are welcome to join us for this dedicated Saturday in May (Saturday, May 5th).  NEW LOCATION:  This year’s retreat will be held at Salmon Bay School to make it easier for all to join.  We will begin gathering at 9:00.   Email Jodi Russell if you plan to attend – reddsell@comcast.net   An agenda will be available next week.

SALMONBAY SCHOOLELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR POSITION

We are still accepting interested parties for the position of the Elementary Volunteer Coordinator position.  If you would like to apply, please send an email expressing your interest, a cover letter and a resume to Megan Ratcliffe at mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org by this Friday, April 27th.  We would like all interested parties to be parents with kids in our elementary program.   An interview committee will be convened to host interviews after April 27th.

If you have questions about the position, feel free to email me at mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org

This position is paid for by the parents, but funded through the district.  It is a 19 hour/week paid position for the entire school year and does require some evening and weekend work.  A job description is available upon request.

Thanks  Megan

Dear Families of 8th graders,

Your student should be bringing home a packet of materials for 8th grade camp!  We go to Camp Orkila with the 8th graders June 5th to June 8th.  Please be on the lookout for the packet.  It is due back to your student’s homeroom teacher on May 4th.

8THGRADE PROJECT UPDATE

Students should be finishing their final drafts this week and checking them off with Melanie.  Final grades should be given on Rubric #7 by the adult mentor/editor, and the final draft checklist should be turned in as well signed by a parent.  These pages are all available in the Files box on the Source class page.  This Thursday's lunch meeting will be about planning for the presentations; over the next couple of weeks we'll look at sample presentation boards and power points.  No more OST classes for 8th grade project.

BTS Newsletter Announcement

(Megan: Please put in ES bulletin on 4/23 and 4/30)

SALMON BAY SECRET GARDEN ALL SCHOOL SPRING BOOKFAIR

SalmonBayBook Fair Supporters– We need your help!

The spring all-school book fair is approaching – Tuesday April 24th – Friday April 27th (Monday will be a set up day with the first day of the bookfair happening on Tuesday)

Our spring book fair will once again take place in our library from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM daily, with books supplied by Secret Garden Book Shop, an excellent independently owned bookstore in Ballard.
The spring book fair also coincides with Poetry nights on Tuesday April 24th and Wednesday April 25th and the all school Bingo night on Friday April 27th.  The book fair will be open for all 3 evenings 6:30 to 8:30pm.  We need help with various jobs. I hope one of the following will fit into your schedule:

Book Fair Staffing
Staffing the book fair involves collecting money and making out receipts for purchases, helping students while they visit the book fair, keeping the book fair books in some kind of order (this is a great way to browse or shop for books while you work). The 1 hour shifts start at 8:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM during the week days, and start at 6:30PM and end at 8:30 PM on April 24th/25th/27th.
Each 1 hour shift requires 2-3 volunteers, so you are never alone. It really is an easy, fun job. You can sign up for a shift at school on the sign-up board located in the hallway outside the main office, or email/call Audrey with your shift(s) request(s) at:
audreybr@hotmail.com, 226-0781.

Book Fair Take Down
Friday, April 27th, after Bingo night, we need to box up all the books and stack the boxes so they are ready for pick-up by Secret Garden on Monday. We also need to move all the tables and chairs back. Stay for a little, stay for the duration, every little bit helps. This is a great job for anyone that wants to be the first to know how well the book fair went dollar wise. You can sign up for this just like a regular book fair shift.  Please contact Audrey Lee (audreybr@hotmail.com) or Cassy Johnson (cassyj@comcast.net)

Thanks so much for all your help in making the book fairs so successful and fun!
Audrey and Cassy

RFF 12: RETURN OF ROCK-A-ROKE.

Mark your calendars for Saturday night, May 12th, at the Ballard Eagles for another semi-annual evening of Salmon Bay parents rockin' the joint: Rock Fer FOSB 12, Return of Rock-A-Roke. Those of you who were present for Rock-a-Roke last year enjoyed several dozen SB parents sharing their singing talents with a live back-up band. Once again, The RFF House Band is putting together a book of favorite rock and roll songs so that you can step up to the mic and get your four-to-six minutes of fame. If you're interested in participating and you like to plan ahead, send an email to vida@seanet.com and we'll get you the list of songs in advance. If there's a song you're dying to sing, let us know. Or just show up that night and pick a song from the book, just like karaoke, but live. See you then!

Please encourage your grade 8, 9, and 10 students to apply for the GYLI program. If you have any questions you can contact Laura Adriance at ladriance@world-affairs.org.

The Global Youth Leadership Initiative(GYLI) is a year-long commitment designed to encourage and assist

high school students in learning about current global issues. The initiative begins with a 3-day long opening session, June 27-29, where students will have the opportunity to hear from expert speakers, explore international career opportunities, and develop leadership skills. Participants will also have the chance to participate this summer in workshops or gatherings with visiting high school youth from Mexico, Zambia and Iraq. In August students will attend a summer wrap-up session to discuss their experiences with the different groups of visiting youth and plan for their global awareness projects. Global awareness projects are student-planned awareness campaigns that educate their peers about world affairs over the forthcoming academic year.

DISTRICT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Last day of school at Seattle Public Schools finalized: Friday, June 22

The Seattle School Board on Wednesday decided to extend the school year by two days to make up for January’s inclement weather.

The last day of school will be Friday, June 22. Seattle students lost three days of school in January because of severe winter weather conditions. One day was made up on Jan. 27.

The School Board voted 0 to 7 against applying for a waiver from the state, which would have allowed Seattle Public Schools to not make up those two days. Not making up the days would have saved the district about $500,000.

“This is a statement on the value of classroom instruction,” said Board President Michael DeBell, after the unanimous vote.

And did you notice all the celebrities that turned up?  Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Zelda Fitzgerald… all the glitterati, and our favorite of all: Auctioneer Rene Spatz!

Thank you again, and have a good week!

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks April 1, 2012

8th graders and I worked on quadratic equations using the quadratic formula….boy I forgot all my square roots….my head leaves Hien’s room swirling.

4th/5th graders dabbled in measurement tools with various stations measuring length, time, volume and weight…I think the most enjoyable station was the volume station with water.

7th/8th grade PE practiced some procedures and routines around mini lesson and then demonstration time and then students demonstrated the rules of 3 on 3 in basketball. I am shocked some of the girls can play basketball in some interesting footwear.

7th/8th grade LA support class dabbled in learning to use a graphic organizer to begin writing their literary essay on Anne Frank. We first spent some time distinguishing between fact or opinion.

Little tidbits you may not know……

Please help us keep everyone safe….we are a community.

Please use 18th Ave NW to drop off and pick up and please do not park your car and come into the building.  Please do NOT use 19th Ave NW to drop off or pick up your student, it can cause congestion onto 65th Ave NW as the buses trying to pull in.

Please know that there is no school supervision on the playground after school.

Spring has sprung although the sun has rarely poked its head out, students are antsy for spring, we are spending time with students to review some basic procedures and routines; sitting down while they eat, cleaning their table, walking in the halls, keeping our hands to ourselves, and going outside in the mornings. Any reminders you could do at home we would appreciate.

Thank you for coming to the auction, planning the auction, working at the auction, and/or contributing to the auction. It was great to see so many of you dressed to stroll down the red carpet.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hi SalmonBayFantastic Families

THINGS FOR YOU TO KNOW:

Elementary Yearbook -  Our elementary yearbook needs photos desperately.   All the information of how to upload them or where to email them is below.  There is so much cuteness within our elementary classes, surely someone has photos.   Thanks for taking the time to send them along.

Science Fair– Our elementary Science Fair is next week, Tuesday April 10th, and thanks to all of the inquiring minds who noticed I sent the wrong Science Fair form home last week.  That was your first investigative test and you passed.  Get your (correct) forms in by this Friday so we know who needs what and where in terms of space and electricity.  Forms are attached

FOSB Retreat– Each year, we gather as a parent group/board on a Saturday to give some extra time to thoughtful discussion and planning for our upcoming year.  What is important to our parents?  Are we fulfilling our vision?  What should we focus our parent funds on?  These retreats are open to anyone and this year will be held on Saturday May 5th, 9:00-2:00, kindly hosted by Robin Lofstrom (thanks Robin).  If you would like to RSVP your intent to come, please email Jodi Russell at reddsell@comcast.net

Friday Sing –This Friday morning, C-Span will be honoring one of our middle school students who won a national video competition in our cafeteria/stage area (Way to go Leo).  We will move morning sing with Mary K to Mr. G’s gym, which is the West gym.  See you there

THINGS TO CELEBRATE ABOUT THE AUCTION

WOW – You all showed up – over 400 of you – looking sharp and ready to bid.

DAN G -  The amount of money raised that night exceeded our expectations and goal.  The exact amount of fundraising that came in from the auction was….. listed in Suzanne’s note below

SHOOT – Some of you left without your potluck dish or dessert dish didn’t you.  We have a small number of lonesome plates and serving utensils outside of the VC offices.  Come claim your things

REALLY- Some of you left the evening not having a clue of what you bought (or what your spouse bought in my case).  If you are missing a gift certificate or physical item, we have them.  Check with either Megan or Caitlin if you felt like you walked off without your prizes

HMMMM-What if you don’t have a clue what you bought or what you spent or your current invoice is incorrect?  Well it is true that because of a few computer glitches that night, a few receipts listed incorrect items.  We feel that we have corrected most of the problems and we will be sending out new invoice receipts soon.  Hold onto these receipts for your taxes next year.  They will come in handy.

If you're interested in participating and you like to plan ahead, send an email to vidaATseanet.com and we'll get you the list of songs in advance. If there's a song you're dying to sing, let us know. Or just show up that night and pick a song from the book, just like karaoke, but live. See you then!

Participants will also have the chance to participate this summer in workshops or gatherings with visiting high school youth from Mexico, Zambia and Iraq. In August students will attend a summer wrap-up session to discuss their experiences with the different groups of visiting youth and plan for their global awareness projects.
