Homeroom has many functions at Salmon Bay School. Homeroom is a place for: Social Studies, activities that foster personal growth and community building, organization skill development, service learning projects, preparation for camp and other special activities, discussion about school “business“–newsletters that go home, permission slips, upcoming events, and general questions or concerns. The homeroom teacher is the family’s liaison with the school He or she can help network with the teachers and other school resources should there be questions or concerns about student’s progress.

7/8th Communications/Homeroom
Students are in the same homeroom for 7th and 8th grade (mixed grade classes). Homeroom is a combination of planning for activities such as camp and service learning, and also silent reading, and language art and an eight grade project.

Math
Salmon Bay School uses the district adopted Connected Mathematics curriculum in all grades. Topics are supplemented with other materials to provide students with extra practice and to ensure students are challenged. Students are grouped by grade level in 6th and 7th grades. Students in 8th grade are provided with two options: 8th grade Math or Integrated Math 1A-B (if appropriate.)

PE
Our main goal in PE is to increase student confidence in physical fitness. We accomplish this by providing opportunities to build personal strength, flexibility and endurance while exposing students to a variety of individual, team, and alternative sports to develop sportsmanship and an overall appreciation of a variety of sports from around the world.

Health 7/8
Health is a class that every 7th and 8th grader takes for one semester of each year. The curriculum changes on a two-year cycle and covers the following topics: substance use prevention, HIV/AIDS awareness and education, human body system, personal and social skills, and decision-making.

Science 6
A beginning biology course that starts with answering he question, “What is Life?” We then move to microscope use, then cell basics, plants, insects and searching for bacteria. We build on the scientific method to explore these topics.

Science 7/8
Our science curriculum in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade consists of learning about science content (the properties of matter, earth science, biology and more) and doing science through our unit on “science investigations,” where students focus on learning science process skills.

Reading and Writing 6
Each 6th grader will take a two-hour literacy block both semesters. In this block students will learn, and continue to develop, specific skills that will support their growth as independent writers and readers. The curriculum is centered around each students’ own experiences and interests. In addition to teaching the students the skills and craft they need to know for language-arts growth in whole class mini-lessons, the class will include one-on-one conference between teacher and student for both subject areas. The conferences guide the student toward becoming independently aware of their growth and progress as learners.

Keyboarding 6
The students will start off by learning to touch type at an individual pace. Together, we will move on to exploring and learning skills for word processing, Excel, Power Point, and beginning movie editing.
