What are the library hours?

The library is available to students before school, beginning at 8:30. We are also open during middle school lunch, and students can come into the library as needed with a pass from their teacher. The library is not available after school on a “drop-in” basis, but middle school students may sign up for supervised Homework Club. (Homework Club is an OST funded activity, and bus transportation is provided.)

How many books can students check out, and for how long?

This varies by grade level, teacher/librarian discretion, and student comfort level. Primary students usually begin the year checking out one or two books per visit, and that amount can increase as students demonstrate personal responsibility. The number of books older students may check out depends on several factors, including curricular needs (research, etc.) Books check out for two weeks, and may be renewed if needed (unless there is a hold queue.) Research shows that the best way to keep our students reading is through relatively unrestricted access to new and engaging books!

Does the library charge overdue fines?

No! All public schools in Seattle are prohibited from charging overdue fines for library materials. The only time that a student would be financially responsible would be if a book is lost or damaged beyond repair.

How often will my student visit the library?

Elementary students have a regularly scheduled library time once per week. The length of time varies by grade level, but each library visit will include an activity, as well as time to browse and check books out. Middle School library visits are determined by curriculum needs. At this level, students might visit the library for book talks and check out, information literacy activities, or other lessons geared toward scaffolding their research skills. Middle School students may also use the library during their lunch period.

What is the best way to get in touch with the librarian with any questions or concerns I may have?

Parents are always welcome to drop by the library at their convenience, but please be aware that I may be teaching or otherwise assisting students and staff, and therefore unable to take a moment to speak with you. As you might imagine, mornings are a particlularly busy time in the library, as students and staff are preparing for the academic day. It’s a good idea to contact one of our amazing volunteer coordinators before beginning your volunteer adventures here at Salmon Bay! They will make certain that you receive all of the information and training you need.
