PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

A big thank you to everyone who came out on Friday night and supported the Salmon and Spaghetti Feed.  Wow! We had a great turnout, very generous donations for the dinner and also for the playground tiles.  Plus, the food was definitely an amazing treat---so tasty! A special thanks to the parents who helped, especially Bret and Stephanie Lynch, to sponsor and make this event so successful.

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce a new staff member:  Natalie Ramsay.  Natalie will be working with the Special Education staff in both the elementary and middle school programs. She is replacing Seema Vaze, who transferred to a position at Nathan Hale High School.  Natalie is an experienced teacher—has worked in various schools for Seattle District, including AS #1 / Pinehurst Alternative School.  She is also an endorsed art teacher, as well as core subjects and special ed teacher.  She will be located this year in Room 214.  Please give her a welcome “hello” if you have a chance.

Did you know?  This is National School Counselor Recognition Week!  You may recognize many of the things Anthony does with children—talking, guiding, problem-solving, friendship coaching, helping families and students in crisis, as well as teaching the anti bullying curriculum in classrooms.

But:  Did you also know all the new programs Anthony has added over the years, including the following ones he has added just this year:

  • Training and supporting the Panther All-Stars in their work of tutoring younger students, being peer conflict mediators, and anti-drug student educators.
  • Starting a book group, on the titles “Raising our Sons/Daughter” by Kathy Masarie, for our parent community (the group has been beneficial to gather parents to support each other in the most important job of parenting our children).
  • Working with parents and staff to bring the wonderful movie, “Finding Kind,” to our school
  • Coordinating our first Middle School Career Day.
  • Organizing our first Middle School Health Fair put on by the Panther All-Stars to educate their peers on the negative effects of alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco.

Simply put:  We count our blessings every day that we have such an amazing counselor as Anthony!

Have a good week!

Jodee

8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE

Week of Feb 6th - Students should have finished their first 30 notecards and shown them to Melanie this week to be recorded.  This included 5 source cards and 25 information cards with the source number noted.  Information on how to do this is in the yellow folder.  I have an information sheet on how to do the source (bibliography)cards if needed.  Students who are doing the same topic as their LA book just need to show me their notes and bibliography information from that project, and then we will decide if they are going to continue in the same way or with note cards.

The next set of 70 cards is due on Monday, February 27 (right after midwinter break) and should include another 5 sources (10 sources total with 100 cards).

This Thursday’s lunch meeting is mandatory for all students participating in the project so that we can confirm expectations and so that students can receive the calendar with dates for the rest of the project.  It should not take the full lunch period.  Students can bring their lunch and eat while we meet.  As usual, please let me know if you have any questions at meshelton@seattleschools.org or 206-252-1781.

SALMONBAYLOWER PLAYGROUND UPDATE:

Great things to say about the playground today and for Friday night.

  1. A huge thank you to Bret and Stephanie Lynch, their staff, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Couer d’Alene Bakery and Charlies Produce for their donations of time, talent and tasty food to Friday’s night successful event.   We hosted over 400 folks, sent kids home tired from pin down, gave food away to a local shelter and collected over $7000 in tile requests.   We couldn’t have done what we did without them.  Net proceeds from the Salmon Feed were around $5000, so are halfway to our goal.
  2. Starting Wednesday, please visit the scrip desk to visit a sample of tiles, an updated view of the playground designand to pick donation form and envelope (which you can leave with the Scrip seller, Volunteer Coordinators or in the Playground box of the main office
  3. We are very close to our goal of completely funding the playground and opening it in the fall.  If you didn’t get a chance to come Friday night and support the project, you still can.  Donation forms are at the scrip table or available from the volunteer coordinators.

Adult Spelling Bee Fundraiser:  Saturday February 11th  7–10 PM

Have you heard the buzzing in the halls yet?  Well, that bee in our bonnet wants to make some money, honey!  So if you’re a pretty good (adult) speller, like live music, and enjoy the company of good friends, then this fundraiser’s for you.  We begin with a written, qualifying round, open to all paying contestants ($10 fee).  After a break with live music by Alice Strassburger (alumni), the top spellers will then participate in a traditional (live) spelling bee.

All proceeds benefit Salmon Bay.  $50 cash prize to the top speller.  Cash donations for entrance accepted at door, donations for drinks gladly accepted, and the live bee offers a $10 buy-back (which is pretty darned popular)!  Saturday, February 11th, 7pm-10pm, at 2007 NW 61st St. (the funky old church with the tricycles on the porch).  Questions?  Contact Robin Wise Lofstrom at robin@lofstrom.com.  Bee there – and bee sure to bring yer date for this fun evening bee-fore Valentine’s Day!

Auction News!  MARCH 31st 2012 – Saturday 5:00 – 10:00 North Seattle Comm College

We need your donations!  Do you have something totally awesome that you just don't need?  Donate it!  Do you have a cabin or time share?  Donate!  Do you have a special skill that someone else might think is pretty neat?  Donate!  Do you have a business that can offer services or items?  Donate!

I have three gift certificates for Diva Espresso to give away.  The first three donations starting TODAY, that are entered either here http://salmonbayschool.maestroweb.com/  or here http://www.salmonbayschool.org/parents/fundraising/auction/donor_form  will get one.

Incentive!  :)

Here is what we still need help with:

1.  Someone to run the Fund A Need portion of the Live Auction.  We won't know what we'll be funding specifically until after mid-winter break, but a general "getting ready to think about it" can happen now.

2.  Someone to set up the Live Auction.  This includes preparing displays, setting up displays and more.

3.. People to help with decorations.  Talk to Jaci!  jak@jacikajfas.com

Please e-mail me if you are able to step in to any of these, or have questions about them.  suzaroo@gmail.com  Please know that there are people to help you know what to do if you've not done any of these jobs before.  The beauty of our auction is that there are many people who have done this all before and are more than willing to help train new people.  :)

Our growing catalog of donated items is on the web as we get them: http://salmonbayschool.maestroweb.com/  check 'em out!  You can donate on that site,or through the Salmon Bay school website's Auction link. http://www.salmonbayschool.org/auction A printable document is there as well.

Like us on facebook if you hang out there.  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Salmon-Bay-School-Annual-Auction/200623706680975

WINE GRAB INFORMATION:

For those of you who are wine lovers and want to share your wisdom or know of someone who would love the gift of wine, (you perhaps?) start thinking about this year's Wine Grab at the auction. We are requesting donations of fabulous wines ranging from $10-$30 in value as another great way to support our auction. Dry Whites and All Reds are the most desirable varieties.

This year, we are making a special plea for one or two donors to submit 1 very special bottle, (unexpected luxurious gem) to be discovered by one or two very lucky bidders.

You can donate in three ways at your convenience. Please be sure to fill out your donor information on the clipboard including why your donation is special. (point rating, description etc.)

  • To Megan at the school
  • On my porch at my home located at: 7058 13th Ave NW, (1/2 a mile form the school. Corner house at 73rd and 13th. There is a white trashcan on the porch to keep it discrete.)
  • Or you can call 425-501-8846 and I will pick it up.

This auction item is done in a sign up fashion so you don't have to compete for a bottle in the silent auction manner but, for example, if we have 25 bottles up for grabs, the first 25 bidders who sign up to take a bottle home, WINS! One bottle is a flat $15, it's that simple, and a great way to make sure you don't go home empty handed.  Chances are, you are going home with something worth much more.

Happy Grabbing,

Hillary Leonard

Free Range Kids” will still be on March 2nd.

There are two copies of “Tiger Mother" in the school library. Check with Linda to see if they’re checked out. I also have a copy to loan. It’s a quick read.

Book discussion will meet at my house, Friday, February 10th, 7:00 pm. RSVP to get the address.

Zara Kublin (Henno, 7th grade)

zkublin@hotmail.com  (206) 276-2831

PS. Next up after “Tiger Mother” is “Free Range Kids” at Karine Dammer’s house. Friday, March 2, 7:00 pm.

From Legislative Chair:

1) FOCUS DAY is right around the corner on Monday, February 20th, President’s Day (no school that day). This is the day, organized by the Washington State PTA, when families and concerned citizens rally at the Capitol in support of public education. You can go to the WSPTA’s main page to learn more:

http://www.wastatepta.org/

Also, here’s a link to the day’s schedule and agenda.

http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/focus_day/Focus_Day_Agenda_12.pdf

SalmonBay Schoolis not a member of PTA, but that doesn’t mean we can’t join with the public school community to demand that the legislature not cut our funding during this session as they are planning to do. Please plan to go if you can because a big turnout makes a big difference. I will be trying to organize some carpools. Contact me if you need a ride or can provide one.

2) Also, note that there is a bill that’s been put forward called “Fund Education First” (HB 2533). I suggest we all be skeptical of this bill because, though the name is awfully nice, it doesn’t raise revenue for education, but simply prioritizes education over other public services. The public education community understands how important social services are for the success of our students. We should consider whether this bill does anything other than shift money around in ways that may even be damaging to children. The devil is in the details.

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

EARLY RELEASE WEDNESDAY: School dismissal at 12:35/12:45.  DON’T FORGET!

On Wednesday,  we will have one of our early release days for teacher professional development.  I want to thank those of you who have been so supportive of our teachers in their work to bring attention to the issues of state support for education in the legislature.

I also thank you for supporting the early release days for teachers, as well.  This week we will be meeting together to work further on project based learning, our focus for the year.  Previously we have read and discussed articles, teachers have taken “learning walks” to learn about other projects being

done in the building, and we have collaborated with staff from Thornton Creek School to learn more about Expeditionary Learning.  In addition teachers have organized themselves into study groups that have been meeting since September to create new project based learning for their curriculum.

On WEDNESDAY we will look at current projects (one elementary, one secondary) and reflect on ways to strengthen and deepen the experience for students. We will look at further resources to support this kind of instruction (The Buck Institute) as well as a particular school,  Minnesota New Country School in Henderson, MN,  and watch a video, “Mummified Chicken, Mutant Frogs, and Rockets to the Moon.”  Teachers will meet in their study groups to see how this new information informs the projects they are creating. This time is invaluable for teachers, to take a breath and do long range planning and reflection.  So thank you for the role you play in supporting their work.

We’ll see you all at the Salmon / Spaghetti feed on Friday!  Seatings at 6pm, and 7pm. Donations, and playground tiles available. Bring your hungry snowboarders to dinner?

Take care,

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks January 30. 2012

Now that the snow has melted and vacation is over we are settling into our routines. Scurrying around the building these past few weeks staying warm I was able to see learning in many of our classrooms.

6th grade:

·         Science was definitely hands on with students holding, petting and observing cockroaches. Tyler was like the cockroach whisperer he was able to get his cockroach to sleep in his palm and then hiss on demand….but I have to say I got a bit squeamish and let out a yelp.

·         Math students were calculating percents using real world examples with sales at local stores.

·         LA students were finishing their personal essays and doing peer editing. Essay topics ranged from being short, to the purpose of detention to the perils of being late.

·         P.E. students were swinging and climbing ropes and working on their upper body strength.

5th grade students were sipping tea as they were deep in discourse in their literature groups.

4th grade students were building stamina in their writing and honing their brainstorming strategies.

1st grade students engaged in real world applications of writing and wrote persuasive letters about getting lockers to having a play date every day.

I also wanted to thank all the parents who came in on the late start/early release snow day and offered their help in calling families, running messages to teachers, finding rides for students and answering the phones. It certainly takes a village….

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Notes for you and ‘can you do’ for us.

NOTES FOR YOU

SALMON/PASTA FEED – Friday night is your chance to support the playground and have a great dinner.   Our goal is to serve loads of folks including the MS families that will be returning from the WEP program up at Snoqualmie.  If you would like to avoid this rush, come at 6:00, with other elementary families.    We will be accepting donations for the dinner as well as selling etched tiles for installation in the new Lower Playground, which is prepped to break ground this summer.

We hope you can come.   It should be a fun evening

DIRECTORY – Hurray hurray, it’s being printed today!!  The Salmon Bay All School Directory had a few bumps getting to the printer this year but it is finally done and will be delivered to students this week.   We send one directory out per household and typically send the directory out with the youngest student of the family.  They of course, are the most responsible.  Many thanks to many ladies for making this helpful booklet happen.  Thank you Jen Fallon, Hillary Leonard, Paula Montgomery, Monica Porter, Jane Davies and Cathy Rundell for all your hardworking efforts.  You will notice that this year’s directory is absent one section.  Our parent listing was omitted for expediency sake.   If you find that your information is incorrect, email me and we will get a list of corrections out to the community.

ELEMENTARY YEARBOOK COVERS -  It is great to see kids working on their covers all around the school.  Covers can be in color this year due to the color nature of the elementary yearbook.  When entries are done, please drop them off at Megan’s office by Feb 6th, ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.  I incorrectly gave you more time last week.

‘CAN YOU DO’ the following?

TOURS – We need a few more folks to help lead tours, especially 3rd, 4th, 5th grade parents.  Thursday Feb 2nd, 9th from 9:15 – 10:30.  Thanks in advance

HALLWAY PRETTY-FICATION – We have a few teachers that would love help sprucing up their bulletin board – should only take an hour or so. Email me if you can help.

SALMON FEED – We need a few more helpers to help this awesome dinner go well.  Email me if you would like to join the fun.  Thanks

Enjoy your week and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all you do.  Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello Salmon Bay Middle School families-  It is hard to believe that it is almost February and the year is just flying by.  We have a week jam packed with activities and events to keep you busy and involved with our school.

2 hour early release this Wednesday Feb. 1st-  This is a district wide professional development day so all students will be released 2 hours early.

Salmon and pasta feed to benefit our new playground Friday Feb. 3rd 6pm in the cafeteria.   Thanks to the generosity of the Lynch family and Ocean Beauty Seafoods we are going to have a salmon and pasta feed here at school this Friday.  We are hoping to have two seatings with one at 6pm geared toward Elementary and one at 7pm in the hopes we will catch those Middle School families whose children are just returning from Snoqualmie pass cold and hungry!   Anyone is welcome at either of these seatings but we wanted to make sure there was plenty of hot food for the families of the late arrivals. We could still use some volunteers to help this ambitious and fabulous event go off seamlessly.  Please reply to this email if you can donate any of your time this Friday.  There is no admission fee but donations are gratefully accepted and we will be selling engraved tiles for our new playground so your families name can live on at Salmon Bay.

High school tours are happening this time of year-  See below for information on your High School of choice.

Help get our school ready for tours-  Our Elementary and Middle school tours are starting this Thursday and we have a list of teachers who could use your help.  If you have a spare hour or two and can help hang a bulletin board or artwork we could really use your help.  Please reply to this email if you are available sometime before Thursday morning.

All School Directory is coming this week!   Thanks for your patience as we worked out a few kinks in our directory process.  Your handy dandy all school directory should be coming home this week in the hand of the youngest Salmon Bay student in your household.  Thank you Jen Fallon, Hillary Leonard, Paula Montgomery, Monica Porter, Jane Davies and Cathy Rundell for all your hardworking efforts. You will notice that this year’s directory is absent one section as our parent listing was omitted for expediency sake. If you find that your information is incorrect, email me and we will get a list of corrections out to the community.

Middle School tutor needed-  Gabriel Kidane, our home/school coordinator is looking for someone who is able to offer tutoring at a middle school level in math, reading and writing.  Please respond to this email if you are able to help out.

WEP update- I got to go up to the pass last Friday and it was loads of fun.  Lots of new snow and beautiful sunny weather combined with no serious injuries made for a great day.  There is lost and found from WEP outside of Connie's room (315) so advise your student to look there if they came home short any gear.

Thanks and have a great week!   Caitlin

8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE

Week of 1/30

We made some decisions at our Thursday lunch meeting that everyone needs to know about.  First, since there are only two assignments for second quarter (topic choice journal and research contract), all students who have completed those assignments will receive a P for passing.  Students that want to do the letter grade system will receive letter grades for third and fourth quarters.  Students that want the Pass/Fail grade system will continue with P's.

Next due dates (set with student input based on current assignments, students may work ahead of this schedule):

Monday, February 6:  30 notecards including 5 bibliography cards  from 3 different kinds of sources (you may use another notetaking format but need to show me what you have to receive credit)

Tuesday, February 28:  additional 70 notecards plus 10 total bibliography cards from at least 3 different kinds of sources.

As usual, please email me at meshelton@seattleschools.org or call me at 206-252-1781 if you have any questions.

Playground Community Support:  Salmon and Pasta Feed:  It’s hard to believe that we’re finally here—but we are!  The playground committee will be offering tiles for sale at the upcoming salmon feed, and hopes to raise $10,000 to wrap-up our fundraising for the year.  So far, the committee has raised over $200K in grant support, and now everybody gets a chance to help out.

·         A donation of $75 is for a 4x4 colored glass tile, etched with your family’s name or other text, and installed on the concrete plinth.

·         A donation of $150 or more is for your text etched into the stones which make-up the star-shaped planter.

·         Both of these design pieces showcase the heart and soul of our project, and will help to make the space really special.

·         At the feed, you’ll have a chance to see an updated drawing of the playground (to be opened next fall!), see the stones and tiles, and fill out a short form to include your name, email address, donation amount, and text to be etched.

·         Donations by cash or check, as well as credit card.

·         Tiles will continue to be sold throughout the rest of the year, both at the scrip table, and with the volunteer coordinators.

We invite you to “like” us on Facebook, and stay tuned about final developments as we wind-down our fundraising and ramp-up our construction.  On behalf of the playground steering committee, I thank you!  ~ Robin Wise Lofstrom, robin@lofstrom.com

So let’s play, Salmon Bay!

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Whew!  What an amazing week!

We will try to put things back to “normal” as soon as possible this week for your students.

However:  Remember tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 24,  is an early release day because it is a furlough day negotiated for teachers as a budget reduction. School will be dismissed for all students at 11:30.

There will be a ‘lunchtime’ for elementary and middle school students prior to 11:30.

Here are re-schedules of events:

  • MOST IMPORTANT:  Friday will now be a school day. (previously was a day off called “the day between semesters.) Classes will be held as usual. This will be our first make up day for the snow days.

  • WEP: the middle school Winter Enrichment programs will be on Friday (not Thursday). All classes and routines will happen as other Fridays. The make up day for the one we missed last week will be Friday, Feb 17.

  • PIE – Parent Information Exchange – Demystifying Standardized Testing – New date will be Thursday March 8, at 7 pm.

  • Chorus Concert: Monday Jan. 30, 7 pm in the auditorium.

Snow Make Up Days – District Calendar:  the district has not settled the dates that will be added to the calendar to make up for the missed snow dates.  As soon as we know, we will pass on the information to you.

Again, even with the furlough day this week, we will be busy establishing the routine for students.  On Tuesday, for the first part of the furlough day, Middle School staff will use some of the time to do their planned activities to commemorate Martin Luther King Day. The elementary teachers and students will do their Peace and Justice assembly on Friday the 27th along with Friday sing.

Thank you, as well, for being so supportive and flexible on Tuesday when we had a both a late arrival and early dismissal—especially with those who pitched in to help get everyone home safely and families notified.

Take care,

Jodee

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Doesn’t that sunshine feel great!!  Here are your news and notes for this week

  1. I need lots of volunteers in the following ways.  Email me if you can help.

  1. SALMON FEED FUNDRAISER – FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3rd from 4:00 on.  We need at least 6-8 volunteers to help set up, serve and clean up for the evening.  Our goal is to feed at least 362 folks, so we need a few volunteers to do it.   All the funds from this evening will support our lower playground project.  Thank you.
  2. ELEMENTARY DAYTIME TOUR GUIDES – It is that time to showcase our special corner of the world and invite prospective families to see what we do.  Can you help lead a tour either on February 2nd or 9th?  General helpfulness and willingness to answer questions are all the skills that are required.   I will provide all tour guides with a friendly cheat sheet to help answer questions.   I need 8 volunteers per tour date.  Tour starts at 9:15 and goes until 10:30 or so.  Partial helpfulness is still appreciated.   Thanks
  3. FLYER DELIVERY – We have begun delivering flyers, showcasing our terrific middle school to the various elementary schools that are in our reference area (Hamilton and Whitman).  Do you live near an elementary school that you would be willing to drop off some Salmon Bay promotion flyers to?   Delivery would be best before this Thursday.  Thanks in advance if you can help with this.
  4. CHESS HELPER/INSTRUCTOR – Because of a strong youthful showing, we could use some extra adult support in our elementary chess club.  Could you help out with some of the basics of chess?  Do you know enough to help advance some of the beginners?  If yes, and I hope yes, please email me.  Chess club meets on Mondays from 2:40-3:30.   Our pawns would be delighted with the assistance.  Thank you.
  5. STRONG EYES FOR EDIT WORK –Our directory is nearing it’s completion and needs a few strong eyes for some editing work.  Email me directly  Thanks

NEWS:

YEARBOOK COVER CONTEST – This is earlier than usual request.   We are encouraging kids to submit their artwork to vie for the coveted spot of elementary yearbook cover.    If you have an artist have them submit their artwork on an 8 ½ by 11 piece of paper outside of Megan’s office.  All entries should be received by Feb 17th.  Color or black and white art is okay.

5th Grade Families -  Students and parents are encouraged to go one of  the Salmon Bay middle school tours, either daytime or evening.  Even though we are one school, your students are automatically enrolled into our middle school program and your students have been here for 6 years, the tour is a great window into the differences that happen between 5th and 6th grade.

Thank you Salmon Bay for supporting your kids and your school.  Have a great week> Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello and welcome back after that unscheduled break brought to you by Mother Nature!    I hope you had fun in the snow, weren't too horribly inconvenienced and are ready to get back to our busy school lives. Thank you for being so flexible last Tuesday as the district tried to predict the unpredictable and keep all the kids in the Seattle School district as safe as possible.

No OST  Tuesday 1/24 due to  our scheduled 3 hour release day.  This is a furlough day and students will be released 3 hours early so there will be no after school activities.

This Friday January 27th will be a regular school day instead of a day off!    We were supposed to have a day off  this Friday, but the district has decided to use this day  to make up some of the time missed due to the snow last week.  They have not informed us of what other make up days there will be, but we will let you know as soon as we get that information.

WEP this week is rescheduled to Friday January 27th.  Since we are now scheduled to come to school on Friday this week we are shifting all the WEP activities so that they will happen on Friday instead of Thursday.  All of the activities will run just like the other weeks and happen on Friday.  We will make up the WEP day we missed last week on Friday February 17th.

WEP installment payments due-   If you were a family who paid the deposit on the WEP program and didn't make any other payment arrangements, we need your balance paid now.  If you have any questions about amounts due, please contact our bookkeeper Jerri at jlharden@halcyon.com or call her at (206)793-1113.

Tonight's Choir concert that was cancelled has been rescheduled for Monday 1/30, Salmon Bay Auditorium at 7pm.  Come hear our very talented choir students sing for you!

Volunteers Needed for Salmon and Pasta Feed- February 3rd-  Thanks to the generosity of the Lynch family and Ocean Beauty seafood we are having a Salmon and Pasta Feed to help raise money for our amazing new playground!  It starts at 6 and we will have a second seating of Middle School families at 7 who will have just returned from skiing and will be ready for dinner!  There will be fundraising tiles for sale to help raise money for the playground and it will be a great time to socialize, raise funds and eat delicious food.  I need some volunteers who would be willing to help out that night.  We need people there at 5 to help prep, people to help with the running of the meal and some people to help with clean up.  Please reply to this email if this is something you can do.

Thanks for your patience during this time of cancellations and rescheduling and hopefully we will be back to normal soon.

Have a great week, Caitlin

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION

Why are students only in school ½ day on Tuesday, January 24th?

Due to 2011 budgets cuts to education in our state, Seattle School District SEA employees are on furlough for ½ day on Tuesday, Jan 24. After students are dismissed, teachers will be leaving their classrooms and showing their disapproval of these budget cuts by demonstrating in different locations of Seattle.  Parents and students are encouraged to join. The more people participate, the louder our voice will be to the public, the media, and the legislators that cutting education funding must not be an option, especially since the WA Supreme Court just decided, once again, that the legislature is in fact not fulfilling its paramount duty: to adequately fund public education.

Everyone (students, parents, educators, concerned citizens) is invited to show support for public schools on Tuesday, January 24:

  1. Wear “RED for ED” on Tuesday, Jan 24.
  2. Meet at 1 p.m. on Jan. 24th NW Market St & 15th Ave NW with your thought-provoking signs and your cell phones.
  3. At 2 p.m. everyone sends pictures and messages to legislators: NOT AT WORK: AMPLY FUND PUBLIC EDUCATION.

And remember, bring your school spirit!

8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE

This week there will be no OST work session on Tuesday due to the furlough day schedule.  There will be a lunch meeting on Thursday and our regular OST session on Thursday afternoon.  I will try to check in individually this week with all those that have signed up; I’m still missing many topic choice journals and research contracts.  Our topics for mini lessons and meetings this week will be note taking.  There is a message about this on the class Source page.  There is also information in the yellow folder on note taking.  We do 30 cards first, but eventually you will need 100, including bibliography cards.  Please stop by or email me if you have questions at meshelton@seattleschools.org.    Thanks, from Melanie

Playground Community Support:  It’s hard to believe that we’re finally here—but we are!  The playground committee will be offering tiles for sale at the upcoming salmon feed, and hopes to raise $10,000 to wrap-up our fundraising for the year.  So far, the committee has raised over $200K in grant support, and now everybody gets a chance to help out.

  • A donation of $75 is for a 4x4 colored glass tile, etched with your family’s name or other text, and installed on the concrete plinth.
  • A donation of $150 or more is for your text etched into the stones which make-up the star-shaped planter.
  • Both of these design pieces showcase the heart and soul of our project, and will help to make the space really special.
  • At the feed, you’ll have a chance to see an updated drawing of the playground (to be opened next fall!), and fill out a short form to include your name, email address, donation amount, and text to be etched.
  • Donations by cash or check only, made out to FOSB.
  • We’ll have samples available for you to look at, and have the most recent design drawings as well.
  • Tiles will continue to be sold throughout the rest of the year, both at the scrip table, and with the volunteer coordinators.

Robotics Team Update

Congrats to FLL Team 405 – “The Winners” for wrapping up this year’s FLL Challenge by competing in the Western Washington state tournament this weekend.   The competition was fierce and it was obvious through the project displays that many teams were extraordinarily committed to the challenge.    Our team had fun and learned a few things while compiling some research on cabbage worms (a few types) that infect broccoli and other members of the cabbage family.   The judges commented that it was a great start and an interesting presentation and made some suggestions for future improvement such as using a variety of research/reference materials, talking with experts, and sharing our results/ideas with others who might benefit from our ideas.  The team again received positive feedback on the robot design, both the mechanical design and the programming with a suggestion that the robot performance could be enhanced by using sensors – a new challenge that we’ll tackle next year!

It was a fun and interesting season and a definite learning experience.   During the teamwork challenge a number of the kids reported to the judges that they felt the experience helped them learn more about working on a team as well as learning about the challenges of designing something and the challenges of team research.

We’ll be taking a few months break from robotics club to reflect on the season and to formulate a plan going forward.   We would like to participate in the FLL challenge again in the fall so will likely start the club again right after spring break (if the equipment is not being used in the classroom).    One idea is to do mini-challenges each week in the spring to help the kids learn how to use the sensors;  to try different building techniques;  different types of attachments, etc, so we’re more prepared to hit the ground running in the fall.    We’d like to get more equipment so more kids can be involved hands-on at one time.   So if you have any leads on potential grant sources please let us know.

We welcome your thoughts and observations.   Also if anyone wants to help pull together some of the mini-challenges for spring, let us know.  We can be reached at dartom@comcast.net.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Next week we will celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday. This is an opportunity for you to join with us by having a conversation with your student, in whatever way is appropriate for their age, about why this is an important holiday. Martin Luther King fought for the civil rights and justice for all people. He relied on schools to be a key component in teaching students both directly about social justice, but also indirectly by supporting all students in their to desire to learn, to aspire to great ideas,  and to realize their dreams, whatever they might be. It is powerful for students when they hear about something both at home as well as at school, to know that the important accomplishments of people are not just something we celebrate and take note of in all sorts of ways.  There are community celebrations (you can find them listed in Seattle Times) at Benaroya Hall, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Seattle Children’s Museum,  Discovery Park and Garfield High School.

SalmonBayExpansion.  We will soon begin tours the first week of February.  In addition to our usual new students in Kindergarten and 6th grade, we will be opening up space in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.  Can you please help us get the word out? Talk to your neighbors, friends, relatives who you think might be interested in joining us in one of those grade levels.  If they are interested, you can have them check our website, or call the school office for tour dates and information.  (Feb 2, 9, March 8 at 8:30am for middle school and 9:15am elementary, and a 6:00 elementary/7:00pm middle school evening tour on March 1).

Have a great week.  Thank you for all you do to make Salmon Bay such a wonderful school community.

Jodee

This will be the new date for our fall community get together that didn’t happen in the fall.  This event, besides being a great way to get our community together, is a targeted fundraiser for our Playground Renovation project. We will be treated to an evening of a terrific salmon/pasta dinner, created by the talented Bret and Stephanie Lynch.  Dinner will be generously hosted that evening by the Lynches and other friendly businesses.  We will accept donations to cover the meal and all donations will go to support the Playground Renovation project.   Salmon Bay families will also have the opportunity to contribute to the playground project by purchasing etched tiles, sold that night.    More info will be coming your way.  We just wanted to make sure it was on your calendar.

We would love the balls you don’t need (There is no easy way to say that one for sure)

Our playground supervision team needs your help.  The kids love to play soccer, kickball, basketball and pogo but we don’t have enough bouncy circular units (balls) to go around.  Do you have any extra around your house that you are not using that we could have?  Drop them off at Megan’s office or throw them at Anthony the next time you see him at recess duty.  Thanks

Our school is expanding as you may have heard – For the first time ever, we are taking more kids at the 3rd,4th and 5th grade levels.  Talk to all the folks who have always wished they could join us at Salmon Bay but there was never enough space.  Now there is.  Encourage them to come to a tour.  I am happy to talk to any prospective intermediate parent.  Have them call me at 252-1730.

LOTS OF IMPORTANT TIDBITS:

  1. Elementary Ultimate Frisbee kids should look below on how to sign up for spring season
  2. The Emergency Meeting scheduled for later this month has been postponed
  3. There is childcare offered free from Coho Kidstime to those who would like to attend next Thursday’s PIE discussion on standardized testing and our kids.  Please reserve a spot at 297-7764
  4. Our monthly FOSB meeting is this Thursday at 7:00 with an earlier opportunity to enjoy “Java with Jodee” at 6:00 PM.  The discussion at 6:00 PM will be Project Based Learning
  5. Elementary Enrichment fees are still being accepted for all the activities that your student and their class participate in for the year.  This is the last call for scholarship requests for the 2011-2012 school year.  An enrichment fee form is enclosed for your convenience.  If you are unsure you have paid or not, email or call me.  Thank you.
  6. Thanks to all kids and families for their continued patience regarding Friday’s winter enrichment program for the middle school.  We use the lower playground as a parking area to keep middle school kids safe, help with drop off and alleviate some of the traffic strain on our neighbors.  Thanks for you cooperation.  It is totally appreciated.
  7. Wednesday morning there is an auction committee stuffing party to help get the letters and donation forms out to everyone, everywhere.  Come join the fun in the cafeteria.

Whew!  That is a lot.  Thanks for reading and have a great week.  Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

HelloSalmon Bay Middle SchoolFamilies-

Thank You for all you did to help the first week of WEP happen successfully and safely!

It is a huge endeavor and whether you came to the mountain, helped keep the parking area safe, were conscientious of our neighbors and didn't block their driveways, got your kids to school on time, got forms and payments in on time, made sure your student had a good night's sleep and a full belly or any of the hundreds of little things you did to help WEP go smoothly, we thank you!   Between the huge group that went to the mountain and the many exciting  Seattle based activities it seems that kids had a great time and enjoyed their activities.

It is a 3 Meeting Week!  There are many ways to get involved in Salmon Bay after school hours this week.  The finance committee is meeting at 7pm on Monday in the cafeteria,  the Auction committee at 7 pm on Tuesday in the library and our monthly FOSB meeting is Thursday at 7 pm in the library.  This month there is a Java with Jodee at 6pm on Thursday right before the FOSB meeting and the topic is project based learning.    Come and learn how to be involved in our biggest fundraiser on Tuesday or join our monthly parent meeting on Thursday and learn some of the ways we support this fabulous school.   Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend!

WEP #2 Friday January 13th-   Our second Winter Enrichment day is this Friday and we will be sending out a separate email with any information you might need.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns and I will do my best to get you taken care of.

No School Monday January 16th for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday-   Sleep in and enjoy the day, you have earned it!

8th Grade Teacher Needs You!   Cleaning out your closets? Please send any old beading/jewelry materials to Melanie in room 317 for our WEP class; we appreciate any donations!

We are also looking for foam core donations for a bulletin board project. We’d appreciate any foam core scraps, including old campaign signs or posters as we can cover the old text. Thanks!!!

Salmon Bay is Expanding-  We are growing our school next year in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades so help us get the word out to prospective families who might want to join our fabulous community.  Tours are listed on our website.

Salmon and Pasta Feed Fundraiser, Friday February 3rd- Save this new date for our community get together and playground fundraiser that we had postponed. The Lynch family has volunteered to feed us a delicious meal of salmon and pasta and we will be selling tiles to help fund the new playground.  This is an easy way to feed your  student who will be just coming home from the mountain if they are doing skiing and snowboarding for WEP.  Students who attend need to have a parent with them.   More information will follow.

Anthony and the Playground staff need more equipment- We are looking for donations of playground balls, soccer balls, basketballs and footballs for the students to use at lunch and recess.  If you would like to donate you can leave them in the main office for Anthony.

Thanks for everything you do and have a great week!   Caitlin

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION

Notes from the Library:

Welcome to 2012! And welcome to new books for the library, including many picture books from the “best of” lists of 2011. I look forward to sharing these books with elementary classes over the next few weeks! We began our new book celebration last week with You WILL Be My Friend, by Salmon Bay favorite Peter Brown.

Students are making the most of before-school library access, especially when the weather is less than ideal for outdoor play. I wanted to remind parents that the library opens at 8:00, and that students need to leave as soon as they hear their bell (first bell for middle school students, third bell for elementary.) There will be rare times when I’m pulled away from the library before school however, and in that case the library isn’t available. If students are unsure of how to tell if the library is available, please ask them to remember this:  An “open door” means an “open library.” For safety’s sake, students need to be in a place where there is supervision. Thanks!

The “big” book awards will be announced in a couple of weeks. This announcement is always causes much excitement, as well as a lot of heated discussion. People are passionate about books, and the students and teachers at Salmon Bay are no exception.

Here is another piece of exciting news in the world of books for young people:

http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2012/12-001.html

Walter Dean Myers is one of our most circulated authors, and several of us had the privilege of hearing him speak at the UW a few years ago. I think he’s the perfect choice for this position!

Happy Reading!

Linda

SALMONBAYLOWER PLAYGROUND UPDATE:

It’s hard to believe that we’re finally here—but we are!  The playground committee will be offering tiles for sale at the upcoming salmon feed, and hopes to raise $10,000 to wrap-up our fundraising for the year.  So far, the committee has raised over $200K in grant support, and now everybody gets a chance to help out.

A donation of $75 is for a 4x4 colored glass tile, etched with your family’s name or other text, and installed on the concrete plinth.  A donation of $150 or more is for your text etched into the stones which make-up the star-shaped planter.  Both of these design pieces showcase the heart and soul of our project, and will help to make the space really special.

Fill out a short form to include your name, email address, donation amount, and text to be etched; donations by cash or check only, made out to FOSB.  We’ll have samples available for you to look at, and have the most recent design drawings as well.  Tiles will continue to be sold throughout the rest of the year, both at the scrip table, and with the volunteer coordinators.

We invite you to “like” us on Facebook, and stay tuned about final developments as we wind-down our fundraising and ramp-up our construction.   So Let’s Play, Salmon Bay!

DECORATION COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!!

Hello Everyone!

Our theme this year is LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!

What images and thoughts are evoked from this theme?  I’d love your ideas and feedback- you can email or call me- please!  206 949 6519 or jak@jacikajfas.com

Here are some of my thoughts:

  • Clean white banners along railing with projection (of kids?  films?)
  • Balloons (not very green in my mind)
  • Red Carpet (super cool if we got a donation…)
  • Elaborate stage- like what though??
  • Film strips- either painted or…?
  • Colored lighting (not Xmas, but the real deal… means we need donations of lights, plus electrical cords)
  • Drapery- (can be expensive to obtain or rent!)

As many of you know, I/we like to make this as inexpensive as possible- so all of your ideas, donations and networking skills are appreciated IMMENSELY!

Thank you for your support.  If you would like to be more involved with the art deco team- either a small project or weekly, please let me know!

Happy New Year!

PARENT INFORMATION EXCHANGE BOOK CLUB NIGHTS STARTING SOON

Start reading now! P.I.E. Our two Book Club Nights are coming right up!

BattleHymn of the Tiger Mother - February 3rd, 7:00 pm

Free Range Kids - March 2nd, 7:00 pm

Hosted in the homes of P.I.E. members Zara Kublin (Feb 3rd) and Karine Dammer (March 2nd). Addresses to be posted soon.

The February book will be “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” and the March book will be “Free-Range Kids” Please come to one or both! These books were chosen for their ability to spark lively discussion of hot-button parenting issues.

Tiger Mother” raises questions about how to parent in our high-pressure times: when to give a push and when to step back; how to know the difference between encouraging our children and pressuring them; how do we step out of this rat race without worrying that we might be "leaving our children behind?”

Free-Range Kids” focuses on the child’s physical independence: how to balance our fears for our children’s safety with our urge to protect them; how overprotection can keep them from becoming confident and independent; what are real risks and what are perceived risks?

Bring your wisdom, your anxiety, and your total cluelessness!

Plenty of delicious snacks and drinks will be provided and, of course, pie.

RSVP greatly appreciated. Send to Zara Kublin zkublin@hotmail.com [We’re trying to get copies of the books to put in the library for parents. If you have a copy you’re willing to loan, please e-mail me. Thanks!

Legislative Update:  NO MORE CUTS!

Today is the beginning of the congressional regular session (the 60 days during which the legislature meets in Olympia to propose, haggle over, and vote on new laws). There are already spending bills being put forward that will make drastic cuts to public services in order to balance the budget. Most of these cuts are slated to come from education. As you probably know, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled last Thursday that the legislature is not fulfilling its primary constitutional duty to fully fund public education ("It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders...” Article IX http://www.leg.wa.gov/LAWSANDAGENCYRULES/Pages/constitution.aspx).

Please call or write to your representatives right now (see attached legislative guide and sample scripts). Make sure they know how you feel about the ongoing cuts to your children’s schools and make sure they know that you know about the Supreme Court ruling. Follow the guidelines in the attachment and be polite but firm. This is a critical time to let the legislature - your paid employees - know that you’re not happy with what they’ve been doing to education and you, along with the Supreme Court, demand that they get their priorities straight.

Enjoy! Advocacy is not only necessary, it’s empowering and fun. I swear.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Happy New Year!

Did you notice that returning to school was much more enlightening this time?  The district installed new hallway lighting in the first floor halls.  Wow!  Who knew those lockers were actually orange?  My favorite comment was from a young student who said, “Look you can really see the words in my story now!”  It’s great to be able to see the student work and art on the bulletin boards.  Eventually, we will also see the lighting on the 2nd floor and annex.  (And, for those of you who asked, I did have them save the old fixtures… future renovation? ... auction items?)

If you have an upper elementary student: they will be doing MAP assessment this week in reading and math.  Remember the MAP assessment measures growth, from one period to the next. If you have questions about MAP, or other assessments, please be sure to come to our next Parent Information Night on January 19—All about assessment—7 pm in the cafeteria.

If you have a middle school student: remember Friday is the first day of Winter Enrichment Program (WEP) so students may need a little extra help getting organized Thursday night, depending on the activity they have chosen.  Also, please remember, drop off and parking will be different.  Drop off in the playground, turning right ONLY, into the field.  No parking in neighbor’s driveways.

It will be a fun, exciting week!    Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks January 3, 2012

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Few reminders:

This Friday, January 6, will be our first Winter Enrichment Day. We will have approximately 240 middle schoolers headed up to the mountain. Please plan for extra traffic around the school in the morning.  We will have the lower playground shutdown in the morning. Elementary students may go to the West Gym for rainy day recess or the library.

January 24th will be an all school furlough day and we will have a 3 hour early release day. We will be serving  lunch for students.

Winter Enrichment FYI’s for Middle school families

Before the winter break homeroom teachers went over with their class, student assignments for Winter Enrichment Activities. Students should know where they will be going for their first Winter Enrichment day.

We will be having a student assembly on January 5th where students will meet with their Winter Enrichment teachers and they will go over expectations, equipment needed and answer any questions. If your student is signed up for a Seattle Area Winter Enrichment activity, please have them bring their payment for their activity on that day.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS – PLEASE HELP US!!

If you will be dropping off your student in the morning for skiing/boarding we will have the lower playground open for parking. Please come south on 18th ave NW, turn right into the playground lot, when leaving the playground we will ask that drivers turn right only.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Happy 2012 Salmon Bay!!  Wowzers, if you haven’t walked through our main floor halls, you should.

Their new lightness and brightness can energize your whole day.  Now you can actually see who is waving at you down the hall.  Thanks to the over break – work folks who got that done.

January– If December was the month to celebrate and rest, then January is the month to meet and get going.  If you look at our calendar above, there are a multitude of meetings that you can participate in to help us plan for and talk about like; math, FOSB finance and budget planning, the all school Auction, student assessment and planning for emergency’s.   Email me if you would like more information.

Friday– As you know now is Winter Enrichment for the middle school.  How cool that for 6 Fridays, our middle school students get to choose from a variety of cool activities (Skiing, snow-boarding, ice skating, city touring, hiking, beading - to mention a few) and spend the day doing them outside of the classroom.  As you have gathered, there will be lots of activity of Friday morning.  Another way you can best help on Fridays, besides what Michelle asked of all drivers above, is not parking on 19th after the school buses leave.   Ski buses arrive shortly after the school buses depart and take up most of 19th.   Thanks for the extra patience it takes to get through the start of Winter Enrichment.  Watch for kids and enjoy the fun.

Thanks– Three sets of Thank you’s today.  Thank you to Kate Banta Green for organizing and coordinating the Direct Giving Campaign and committee.  Congratulations, you made your 2011 Direct Giving goal cheerfully and confidently.    Thank you all of Salmon Bay who donated to the Direct Giving Campaign.  Your donations helped the committee do what they set out to do – financially support the students and staff of Salmon Bay School.  And lastly, a big thanks to our dear sweet Mary K McNeill who usually gently guides a few dozen of us through the trees during our evening Lantern Walk.  Well a few dozen turned out to be a few hundred it seemed and Mary K did what she did best…. She giggled, smiled and kept on singing.

Enjoy your week and I hope you’re glad to be back. I know I am.  Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello and welcome back!  I hope your holiday break was filled with good things and down time and you are ready for 2012 and all that it will bring!   We are hitting the ground running as WEP starts this Friday and this is a super busy month.

WEP Assembly Thursday, January 5th-  Students will meet with their Winter Enrichment teachers and they will go over expectations, any equipment needs and answer any questions.

First WEP Day Friday, January 6th-  This is a very busy day with all students arriving at school at the regular time.  We have approximately 240 kids heading to Snoqualmie Summit and they will be dropped off with all their gear, adding to the usual morning busyness.  The lower playground area will be closed to students and will be used as a drop off area for cars with students and gear.  Please be extra careful when dropping off at school as these kids will be excited and loaded down with gear which can lead to them being less careful than normal.  Please drive south on 18th ave NW and turn right into the playground.  When exiting the playground please turn right only to help keep traffic moving smoothly and safely.

Congratulations Geography Bee Participants-  I was super impressed with all the participants and how well prepared they were.  Congratulations go out to Colin F. on taking first place for the second year in a row!

There will be an email coming out tomorrow with more in depth information about WEP and should answer any last minute questions you might have.  Please don't hesitate to call me if there is anything I can help you with, and I will do my best to get you the information you need.

Thanks and have a great week!   Caitlin

8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE

By now interested 8th graders should have turned in their signed green contracts to sign up for participating in the project.  They can still turn them in with Sam or Melanie this week.  This will get them signed up for the Projects and Presentations class and give them access to information on the Source.  Students that want to attend Tuesday or Thursday sessions after school should also sign up for the OST class and indicate which days they plan to come.

We will also have our weekly lunch meeting for students on Thursday during lunch in Room 317.  Students should be finishing up their Topic Choice Journals and should bring those by Thursday this week and turn in to Melanie or Sam.  If you have any questions, please email Melanie at meshelton@seattleschools.org or Janet at jabogle@seattleschools.org.

BattleHymn of the Tiger Mother - February 3rd, 7:00 pm

Free Range Kids - March 2nd, 7:00 pm

Hosted in the homes of P.I.E. members Zara Kublin and Karine Dammer

Snacks and drinks provided.

RSVP appreciated. Send to Zara Kublin zkublin@hotmail.com

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Please save the date:  SalmonBayAssessment Night, January 19th  at 7 pm.  This will be an evening to talk about assessment: state, district and classroom.  How does a parent make sense of it?  There will be two parts: the first, to answer the question, “How do I use / read the assessment reports I receive for my child?” and the second, “How should I look at the big picture of assessment for my child?” This will be a presentation that has been planned by parents, staff and administration together. We hope to see you there!

ThursdayDecember 15– Middle SchoolGEOGRAPHY BEE at 1:00 to 2:30.  If you have never had the sheer fun of watching the Salmon Bay Geography Bee—don’t miss it.  Test yourself: how many of the questions could you answer?

EARLY DISMISSAL:Don’t forget we will be dismissing school at 1:35/1:45  Middle school will just be returning  from roller-skating, and Elementary will do their Lantern Festival that day.

ELEMENTARY REPORT CARDS– Elementary report cards will be coming home at the end of this week.  Remember this is a new report card, and if you have questions you can always check in with your student’s teacher.

From all your students’ teachers and staff, we wish you a wonderful holiday season—it’s always great to see if you can squeeze in some extra time for everyone in the family to READ!

Happy Winter Break!

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks December 9, 2011

I finished up my last teacher observations this past week and learned lots of Math and Science.

Multiplication is always a tough one to learn but the 3rd graders I had the opportunity to sit in with had it down. Students did choral response to equations, drew pictures to help their thinking and worked on following directions.

In another class we worked on equivalent fractions using the IXL computer based program along with a mini lesson using manipulatives to help students see visually if 1/8 is = to 4/12.

I ended my week having 6th graders learn about transpiration and acting out the process of the water cycle through plants.

K-8 performance. If you didn’t get an opportunity to see Tom Sawyer, I’m sure you’ve heard the buzz. I attended the Thursday performance and it was standing room only and it was wonderful to see both elementary and middle school students in this production. Thank you to all the staff, parents and students for your hard work to make this happen!

Tidbits you may want to know…..

Middle schoolers will go roller-skating on Friday and the dress code will still be in effect.  If students are unsure of the dress code policy it can be found in their student planner on page 5.

The temperatures have dropped but students seem to be bundled and prepared to play outside before school and during lunch recess. Thank you for sending your student dressed for the weather.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

What a beautiful day to begin the last week of the year.   Here is some news for you.

LANTERN CELEBRATION:  Please join us this Friday at 8:30 AM in the stage area for our Solstice Lantern Celebration.  With the gift of Mary K’s singing and gentle guidance and the creativity of all of the elementary student’s lanterns, our solstice lantern celebration is a great treat for your heart and soul.   The lanterns will light our way and the children’s voices will guide the mood.  It is a beautiful expression of harmony, joy and peacefulness.  I will need helpers to get all the lanterns set up in the morning and back to classes after our celebration.   Students take their lanterns home to bring back to Salmon Bay park to enjoy a true lantern walk through the trees, with delicate voices to lead our way.   Evening performance begins at 6:30PM at Salmon Bay Park.  Dress warmly.  Nasty weather cancels the event.  Hope to see you.

PHOTOS:  This year is looks like there will be a lot of photos of me and Sherry Jaqua (editor) for our elementary yearbook, because we haven’t received much else.  If you have time over the holidays and you know you have cute photos of cute kids doing cute things, please help by gathering them, giving them and continuing taking them.  Sherry’s email issherry@foryourhealthnw.com or drop them off in the folder outside of Megan’s office.   Thanks for your help with this.

TSHIRTS – We have some new ladies Salmon Bay tshirts that come in 3 styles and a few different colors.  We also ordered one new blue color tshirt for the fellas.  We didn’t expand into sweatshirts or kids shirts this time, due to the large inventory we still have.  Ladies and gentlemans tshirts are $12 and checks can be made out to FOSB.  What a great gift idea.   Shirts can be purchased before school or after school or anytime you can catch Megan or Caitlin.

ROCK FER FOSB WRAP UP –  Thanks to Penny E, Cameron M and Alan W, for organizing the Rock fer FOSB event last Saturday.  Terrific music was abundant that night as well as generous rock and rollers.   The door proceeds almost tipped $700.  Thanks to all and see you in the spring.

GRATITUDE AND BLESSINGS:  Thank you for your gentleness with children and with each other.  Thank you for supporting the teachers and the staff.  Thank you for you gifts of time and talent.  Thank you for the warm smiles, the friendly hellos and cheerful goodbyes.

Enjoy your break, enjoy your family, enjoy your city and we will see you in 2012.   Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello and Welcome to the Last Week of School Before Winter Break!  We have a full and fun week ahead with the Geography Bee, Roller-skating and a FOSB parent meeting to complete the excitement!

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"  was a smashing success!  It was so amazing to see a play with a  large cast of K-8 kids with many lines and lots of scene changes go so smoothly.  Congratulations to Glyde and her whole cast and crew for a job well done!

Middle School Treasurer needed!   A huge thank you to our Middle School treasurer David Sommerville for all his wonderful service as he is passing on the torch to the next eager person.  If you like numbers and want to take a more active part in the parent board, this is the job for you.  You would be working with the elementary treasurer and all school bookkeeper and asked to attend monthly FOSB meetings.  The Middle School Treasurers works with the Middle School staff to help with all things financial.  It is a great way to get to know the Middle School staff and be aware of Middle School financial needs.  Please reply to this email if you think this is something you are interested in.

FOSB Meeting Thursday 12/15 in the library at 7pm.   See you there!

Come down and get a new and beautiful Salmon Bay t-shirt.  We just got in an order of adult sized Salmon Bay t-shirts in time for all your holiday shopping. They are very reasonably priced at just $12.00.  I also got in some more Middle School Panther sweatshirts so if you were looking for one I have them now for $25.00.

I hope your winter break is festive and relaxing and you have time to do the things you most like to do!  Take care and we will see you in 2012!

Caitlin

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION

8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE

At this time we’ve held an evening meeting for parents and students, and a lunchtime meeting for students, about how the 8th grade project is going to work this year.  Students know that they have several options of how to participate:  work independently with check- ins with an adult mentor, attend either or both of the Tuesday and Thursday afternoon after school OST sessions for mini-lessons and work time with Janet and Melanie, and a weekly check in meeting during lunch on Thursday’s for those that are interested.

Students who want to be registered and do an 8th grade project should see Sam or Melanie to get a contract, folder and topic choice journal.  Contracts should be turned in by Wednesday, Dec. 14 to either Sam or Melanie.  Once we have contracts, we will create a class called Projects and Presentations that will be visible on the Source with Melanie listed as the teacher.  All project information will be available there, from assignments to calendars to what students should currently be working on.

Topic choice journals should be completed by Thursday, January 5 and turned in to Sam or Melanie.  The first session for the OST class will be Thursday, January 5 after school in the library.  If you have questions, you can email Melanie at meshelton@seattleschools.org or Janet at jabogle@seattleschools.org.  Thanks

Notes from the Library:

A huge “thank-you” to Lisa Dunn and her crew of volunteers for all of their terrific work on the University Book Store book fair! I enjoyed seeing students and their families, as well as many teachers taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity to support the library here at Salmon Bay.  The purchase list is almost finished, so look for some great new books in the library when we return from break.

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to introduce (or re-introduce) middle school students to the resources available through the district’s subscription databases. If you’re familiar with the databases available through the Seattle Public Library, access to our databases works in much the same way. You can access them for free from any district computer, but they require a user name and password for access from home (or any other non-district computer.) Students were given a sheet with all of the necessary information. (If it gets lost,  they can come by the library and get another one.) The district databases are the preferred reference sites for most middle and high school teachers, so it’s important that our students get lots of practice using them!

As some of you know, the winter round of MAP testing has begun, which always means some changes to our regular library schedule. We’re working hard to make sure that all of the elementary students will have one more opportunity to visit the library to check out books before the break!  And speaking of break…it’s a great time to round up all of those library books that may have found a place to hide at home!

Have a wonderful break, and remember to find some time to curl up with a good book!

Linda

6th GRADE TEACHER NEEDS YOUR HELP :

DearSalmon BayParents and Community Members!

I am hoping to offer a new exploratory class about Food, Cultures, Healthy Eating and Cooking this spring. The class would allow students to explore the politics of food, how to pick healthy choices when it comes to food, how and what people in cultures around the world eat and some cooking basics. In order to make this class a success, I need your help! I am hoping to gather any old (but still functioning and safe!) small cooking appliances such as Electric Frying Pans, Crock Pots, George Forman Grills, Hot Plates, Electric Kettles, etc. If you have any of these items way back in your kitchen cabinets, or down in the basement, and would like to donate them for the semester--or permanently--please email me at knhayes@seattleschools.org to let me know what you have.

Thanks!

Katie Hayes . 6th Grade LA/SS

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

As we approach the holiday break,I want to thank you, as always, for supporting the teachers in their work with students.  Especially at this time, teachers try to give students strong academic challenges and projects, as well as a balance of fun and special projects. Your support helps them pull off that balance.  In other words, keep checking the homework!  And keep everyone reading at home… And read the bulletin to take advantage of all the great things happening: lantern festival, geography bee, roller-skating, Tom Sawyer….

8th Grade Project Information Night-  Tuesday December 6th 7-8pm CafeteriaThis is a meeting for parents and students to get information about how the 8th grade projects will go this year.

Update on district Capacity Management:the revised district proposal for next year does NOT recommend any portables at Salmon Bay.  It does recognize classrooms we will add (elementary expansion). They may change our geo-zone boundary to include more residences in the Adams Elementary attendance area.

Thank you to FOSB:  We want to thank our amazing parent group, Friends of Salmon Bay, who have concluded their annual Mini Grant process.  These grants will provide:

  • New stage curtains!  They are gorgeous!
  • Support for showing Finding Kind, as well as a school bullying curriculum
  • Classroom emergency supplies
  • Class supplies for Japanese class, Spanish Class, Making History Project, 7/8th grade novel project, kindergarten expansion, reading program,
  • Technology projects: earphones, ipods for audiobooks, audio book library

It is gratifying to have a community of teachers and parents who work and collaborate so arduously to support the learning of their children, and all children at Salmon Bay.

Take care,

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks  December 2, 2011

I had the opportunity to just peek into an intermediate class to see students working on geometry.

6th-8th graders experienced “Finding Kind” it  was an amazing experience to see students be authentic with each other and able to take steps to apologize to one another. Kudos to Anthony and Dana for the background work to make this happen.

6th graders were engaged in the library and LA classes gaining important research skills to build that foundation as a researchers by learning to evaluate reference books on Egypt.

7th graders were exploring scale factor and ratios demonstrating their knowledge by sharing their work to the class. The mantra in the class is U.S.A. does the student’s  answer show “Understanding”, a “Strategy”,  and do you have an “Answer”.

It was wonderful to hear the hallways with pitter pattering feet and student voices after  a week break.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

A full week of December business for you…

Three events for you –

  1. Tom Sawyer– the second all school play performance that we have ever had.  Come enjoy the youngest to the oldests in the classic Twain tale.  Performances are at standing room only for Fri and Sat.  Thursday night is a good option for a seat.

  3. LANTERN FESTIVAL – The dark days of December are made more beautiful and bright with the lights and sounds of Mary K McNeill, our kids and delicately crafted lanterns, which fill the room on Friday morning, December 16th at 8:30 AM.   Please join us for this magical morning.   If you would like to help me set up, email me.

Two meetings for you –

FOSB NEWS:  December FOSB meeting – Thursday December 15th 7:30 PM Library

Please note the FOSB meeting has been moved to next Thursday, December 15th at 7:30 p.m.  By rescheduling our meeting, we were able to avoid a conflict with the all school play (and it is going to be great--please join us for a performance!). We are currently finalizing the FOSB meeting agenda and ask that anyone with agenda items contact Jodi Russell (reddsell@comcast.net) or Sarah Kopf (kopfpatterson@earthlink.net )

Budget discussions are starting for next school year. If you are interested in joining this conversation, please plan to attend the finance committee meeting on January 9th at 7p.m.

We are seeking a few volunteers who are interested in helping host FOSB coffee time. Coffee time is generally held after drop-off in the morning.  Host duties include preparing coffee and assisting with set

-up/clean-up. If you are able to help for a time or two, please contact Jodi Russell or Sarah Kopf.

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION COALITION MTG THIS THURSDAY –

7:00 PM TOPS K-8

We would like to convene a meeting with teachers, administrators and parent representatives from all 7 alternative schools to discuss:

* what the "creative approach schools" process is about and the possible implications

*  the pros and cons of different decision paths

* determine whether and how we might coordinate our efforts.

Feel free to join us at TOPS, at 7:00 PM in the library.

Attention: Salmon Bay Families who live in the NE quadrant and the Eckstein Middle School Attendance area!  Transportation meeting tomorrow night.

A group of NE parents have quickly put together a meeting for all parents of Salmon Bay students without guaranteed transportation next year (2012/2013) and beyond, to meet with Tom Bishop the Director of Transportation for Seattle Public Schools.

Tuesday, Dec 6th 7PM

Thornton Creek Elementary

7711 43rd AvenueNE Seattle, WA 98115

Due the State's education budget cost, Transportation has been given a mandate to dramatically cut bussing costs next year! There will be a city wide cut in bussing services, including discontinuing bussing our kids from outside the Salmon Bay assignment zone, which is the combined Hamilton and Whitman Middle School Attendance Areas. (The grandfathered clause for busing is scheduled  to end May 2012) The goal of this community meeting is to brainstorm  and advocate for transportation solutions with Tom that would make it possible for our children and other NE students  to continue to attend Salmon Bay.

The timing of this meeting is important as Tom needs to turn in his bussing plan for the 2012/2013 school year in January.

Please send at least one parent to the meeting, we need to demonstrate that this is an important issue for us as a community.

Coming up: P.I.E. Book Club Nights!

Friday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

Hosted in the homes of P.I.E. members Zara Kublin and Karine Dammer

Snacks and drinks provided.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Welcome back to school!  I hope you had a refreshing and happy holiday break.

You probably already know through the bulletin that Salmon Bay will be showing the documentary “Finding Kind” this week to middle school students.  The film has been well received in other schools, and after previewing it with Anthony, we decided to show it here as well.  Middle students will see the movie on Thursday morning, followed up with discussions in their home room groups, and further follow up on Friday.  We will make certain that students include all types of bullying in their discussions and reflection, not just girl-to-girl bullying.  There is an opportunity for parents to view the film as well, on Thursday, December 1st, at 7pm, in the Ballard High School auditorium.  Please remember that this event is not open to friends and relatives, but the space is limited just to parents of Salmon Bay.  As we have previously shared with you, this film is not appropriate for elementary aged students.  Since our middle school students will have already seen the film during the day, there is no need to have students attend this showing.  We want to also thank FOSB, our parent group, for co-funding the event with us. There is an important reason why our first rule at Salmon Bay is to be kind….and this will give us a great opportunity to have meaningful conversations with our middle school students.

Thank you for your conscientious participation in school conferences last week.  We know that when parents do participate in their child’s education in ways like this, and by attending their performances, games and school events, it solidifies the child’s every-day engagement and effort as well.  Many of your conferences may have been “student led” and this is one more way we use to further develop our alternative school philosophy to have students own their education, and to become strong independent learners and thinkers.

Thank you for all you do to support your child at Salmon Bay School.

Have a good week.

Jodee Reed, principal

PIE NEWS:

Did you miss out on PIE's excellent speaker, Lori Gradinger, a couple of weeks ago?  There is another chance for parents to hear her talk about communication and connection with your tweens and teens on December 6th at Greenwood Library....it's FREE.

"HOLDING THE CONTAINER OF CONNECTION"

The issue of connection takes a different form while our kids are teens.

It is not a 50/50 proposition and it is not simple.

Can Connection and Conflict co-exist?

If so, what does this look like?

What does it sound like?

How does this feel?

How can we stay calm and clear in the midst of our differences with our kids, our partners, other parents? And how do we articulate all of this to the kids?Let's talk.

I have been learning some great stuff about the development of the brain and the mind and the ways in which we can influence this process for our kids (and ourselves).

I hope you can join me…..feel free to send your questions/ issues ahead of time on e-mail.

BOOK CLUB NIGHTS:

Friday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

Hosted in the homes of P.I.E. members Zara Kublin and Karine Dammer

Snacks and drinks provided.

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

Remember:  NO CLASSES NEXT WEEK!

As teachers prepare and begin holding parent teacher conferences, I want to remind you that next week there are no classes, so that teachers can schedule their usual time during the day to meet with families.  Because we are a K-8 school, our middle school families also have this schedule, and the opportunity for a student-led parent/teacher conference.  If you have not yet signed up for your appointment, please do so right away.

Remember: PANCAKE BREAKFAST!  and  FAIR TRADE FAIR!

Roll in Saturday morning for breakfast and check out all the fair trade booths at the same time. These funds will provide scholarship opportunities to help ensure all of our middle school students can participate in our Winter Enrichment program.

Remember: UNIVERSITY BOOK FAIR

This is also the week-end when anything you purchase at University bookstore generates 25% of the amount donated to Salmon Bay School.  But there’s also lots of fun in store: puppet show, music, edible book feast…

Our teachers and students appreciate the great turn-out at all these events, and the support  it produces for our community.  Hope to see you there!

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks

3rd graders exploring the definition of a parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus.

4th/5th grade students practicing multi digit multiplication and long division.

6th graders learning how to take notes from a non-fiction text (Egypt unit) using a strategy from Teacher’s College called “boxes and bullets”.

7th/8th grade students infusing research skills as well reading non-fiction text and being able to pull important facts using the strategy “boxes and bullets” in their Africa unit.

Tidbits you may not know……

We are keeping busy this month! We are just finishing goal conferences with staff where we discuss their professional growth goals this year, which includes a student academic goal along with the support they will need to accomplish each goal. These reflective sessions are vital to our continued growth as a learning community. I am also in the midst of 1st round formal teacher observations, which consist of a Pre conference, 30-45 minute observation, Post conference, and teachers are provided with written feedback. Again, the observation cycle allows for continuous conversations about improving and enhancing the teaching and learning at Salmon Bay.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Lots to keep you busy and moving in these darker days of fall, like….

VOLUNTEER NEEDS:

  1. I am looking for folks who like data entry.  Our directory has hit the point when we need some dedicated time in front of the database and computer.  Our hope is that with a few 2 hour shifts, we could begin to wrap up the all school directory.  Wanna help?  Contact Megan  (Directories will hopefully be ready for delivery in December)
  2. I am looking for someone(s) who has knowledge in the graphic arts area and could help our new Elementary Yearbook coordinator, Sherry Jaqua, with the layout of our elementary yearbook.   Are you a wizard at Publisher or Word and could you help create a template where we could showcase the faces and grins of all of our elementary superstar kids?  If so, contact Megan.

VOLUNTEER NOTES:

  1. This fall’s UW bookfair has many events to entertain and delight you this weekend.  Check out the schedule below and chances are whatever time you are going, you will run right smack into a fun event, like the Edible Bookfair on Saturday, a family puppet show on Friday, sing alongs with Mary K on Sunday and right after, an opportunity to hear Dorothy and Amy (our wonderful 1st grade teachers) read stories.   Use that SBS code to order online or in person and start your shopping.   Also, if you are in the children’s book section, you will notice that our teachers have created “Teacher Wish Lists”.  Parents often ask how they can purchase books for their teachers.  It is easy.  Check out the lists at the bookfair.  Purchase the books.  Take the books to your favorite teacher.  Everyone smiles.
  2. Our fall Fair Trade Fair and Pancake breakfast is also this weekend and supports some wonderful organizations, with the opportunity to buy coffee and chocolate and eat pancakes in your favorite cafeteria.  The proceeds support our middle school kids, which will eventually be your middle school kids.  Consider the whole weekend a fun way to support your community and beyond.
  3. Next week, after or before your conference time with your teacher, check out the new “Salmon Bay Hoodie and jacket extravanganza” in the cafeteria, also known as Lost and Found.  Katie Shinn and friends have offered to display the blossoming mountain of lost clothes that now live in our space and not yours.  Clothes will be donated at the end of next week to a local children’s clothing bank.
  4. Free yogafor kids is every Thursday, offered by the very kind-hearted and flexible, Becky Moore.  Class begins at 8:00 AM in the rug area.  Drop in and prepare to bend.
  5. Tomorrow morning, after drop off, there is an envelope stuffing party for the Auction procurement forms.  Friendly attitudes are all that are necessary.  Check out below for the cool auction theme for this year….
  6. Finally, thanks to all the good folks of PIE, who have arranged for a great opportunity to hear Lori Gradinger tomorrow night.  I have heard her speak and can testify to her wonderful use of humor and strength.  Remember, there is free childcare – (call Coho kids) and treats afterward.  Thank you PIE.

Lots to keep you busy.  Thanks for helping make our school a terrific place.  Megan

Notes from the Library:

As we head into the whirlwind that is November and December, I thought that I would take a moment to update everyone on this fall’s library happenings. We’ve been busy circulating over 4,000 books since the beginning of the year, which would not have been possible without the help of my fabulous TA, Soleil Slawson. (If you have a student in Amy’s class, Soleil is the friendly person at the desk who helps them check out their books every week!) I’ve been amazed at how quickly students have been able to slip into the routines of class library visits. During the month of October, we were able to enjoy some of our favorite seasonal books, including The Perfect Pumpkin Pie. You might ask your student if they can remember the ghost’s chorus. (It starts with “Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkin Pie…”) In the intermediate classes we’ve just finished a month-long reading of Dying to Meet You, a mystery by Kate Klise. This book is one of this year’s Sasquatch Book Award nominees. (The story is told through a series of letters written back and forth between the main characters.) We did a lot of inferring and predicting work with this book, and I was really impressed with how students were able to support their predictions with specific examples from the book!

I’ve also had several opportunities to work with middle school students on everything from how to select and evaluate nonfiction sources, to book-talking new (and not-so-new) fiction. We’re definitely a school of “omnivorous” readers!

Speaking of reading, I hope to see many of you at the book fair this weekend. We can’t say enough about how much we appreciate the hard work and generosity of the Salmon Bay parent community! This library collection would simply not exist without you, and all of your efforts on its behalf. As always, feel free to contact me at laillman@seattleschools.org or 206.252.1737if you have any questions or concerns.

Happy Reading!

Linda

From Early Masters Art School this week...Beavertales: The Great Canadian Landscape

Oh Canada! When it comes to landscape painting, our neighbors (that’s neighbours, eh?) to the north have plenty to work with. The beauty of the mountains, lakes, and trees have inspired generations of artists to spend a LOT of time in canoes and cabins, capturing the exquisite beauty of their home and native land. We’ll learn about a group of famous Canadians called “The Group of Seven” who believed the true spirit of Canada could be found in the beauty of its northern lakes and trees. We’ll explore a crazy variety of different approaches to the great outdoors in this program. Not to be missed!  (4 sessions)

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

You’ve noticed the leaves falling?  It’s been such a gorgeous fall season. That also means it’s time for school conferences.  By now you have probably already signed up for your date and time, but I wanted to remind all of us about the importance of fall conferences.

Elementary Conferenceswill be an opportunity for teachers to review with you the new report card and process. It is also a time to hear about how your student is doing so far, a time for you to talk with the teacher about your own observations or concerns, a chance to see how some of the big picture goals play out over the year, and a time to establish the connection for continued communication throughout the year.

Middle School Conferencesare an opportunity for your student to show you their progress and goals, to reflect on their work so far, and to open up the conversation that you can continue with them for the rest of the year.  This is different than just receiving a report card, or looking at the source—it reinforces our belief that we want student to own their learning and be responsible for evaluating their progress. It is also different than an elementary conference because the student is the presenter and the teacher is a participant, with the parent, in that reflection. It is also a time to establish the ways you will continue to discuss progress with both your student and the teacher.

As you know, having specifics to talk about with your student always improves that dinner conversation about what did you do in school today and conferences play a key part in keeping that conversation going.

Have a good week.

Jodee

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Sneak Peeks November 6, 2011

We got our groove on….we had our middle school dance Monday, the 31st.  Thank you to all the parents, staff, the ASB, and especially Caitlin Racey and Janet Bogle, for the help to make this possible. We were entertained by our student performance of “Thriller” and we all got down to the “Cha-cha” slide.

The Halloween parade was a march of creativity and imagination. There were penguins, M &M’s, clone troopers, Captain Kirk was present and I do believe I saw the tooth fairy. Thank you to the parents for helping in the classrooms, and coming to help with all the costumes.

7th/8th grade Science one class was working on measuring lung capacity, with plastic tubes and a lot of red faces.

7th/8th graders were assessing their knowledge on their geographic map test.

6th grade LA students were working on their personal narratives.

3rd graders in Math were challenging themselves with having more fluency with addition/subtraction facts.

Tidbits you may not know……

The weather is getting brisker…. students will still be going outside for recess to get fresh air, so please have students dressed appropriately.

Drop off and Pick up zone….please do not double park or let your student off in the middle of the street. We want to keep all members of our community safe.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

How to plan your week, you wonder?

  1. Start using those Chinook Books.  Thanks to all that purchased one or two or three.  Chinook Books are now gone.  $10 for every book went to the FOSB general fund
  2. Speaking of books, start thinking of items you might appreciate from the UW Fall Bookfair that begins Friday, Nov 18th.   Our library gets most all of it’s funding for new materials from our 2 bookfairs and this fall bookfair is a good one.  We receive 25% of most every purchase and your extended family and friends can contribute to our cause just by using our code…. SBS if they make any purchases in store or online.  Use that code at any point in the weekend and our school library will benefit.  Lisa Dunn has listed a terrific set of activities that will be happening at the UW bookstore, usually on the 2nd floor near where the children’s books are.  There are things to listen to, sing about, eat from and guess on, including our annual Salmon Bay trivia contest.
  3. Speaking of contests, they are fun and inspire folks to be creative which is hopefully what you did for our Auction Theme Contest which ends tomorrow.  Got a cool theme?  Have a nifty idea?  Have you always wanted to see this community dressed up for a night in bridal wear?  If yes, then send your ideas to Suzanne Waller at suzaroo@gmail.com
  4. Speaking of ideas, the playground committee is presenting their updated playground plan for you to get an idea of what the fundraising needs are, what the timing and construction of our new playground will look like and how you can continue to be supportive.  Come listen and learn this Thursday at 6:00, which is prior to the monthly Friends of Salmon Bay parent meeting at 7:00 in the library, which you are also welcome to listen and participate in.
  5. Speaking of parents and meetings, did you know that Conference week is the week where you get to meet with your student’s teachers and talk about the progress of the year?  It also means there is no school that week for Nov. Mon 21st – Wed 23rd.   If you need childcare, contact Coho Kidstime at 297-7764
  6. Speaking of time, thank you for yours.  Thank you for donating your dimes and your dollars and your time in between.

Enjoy your short week.  Megan

November 8, 15, 22, 29
