New Salmon Bay Start Time for 2010?

The Seattle School District's transportation department has proposed that Salmon Bay's start time changes beginning with the 2010-11 school year.  Our new bell time would become 8:20am, with classes ending at approximately 2:30pm.  District Transportation Manager Tom Bishop visited Salmon Bay last week to explain how the proposal came about and answered questions.

To summarize, the district is proposing to offer grandfathered transportation for existing students who live outside of the newly designated attendance areas.  Mr. Bishop is planning for a 5-year grandfathering scenario, though the school board may request the timeline be shortened to fewer years.  The district is facing a $45 million budget gap for next year, and at this time it is unknown what scenarios will make it out of the budgeting process.

Changing the start time for Salmon Bay (and TOPS K-8) to 8:20 is designed to even out the total number of buses needed to transport everyone.  There currently are far more buses used districtwide to accommodate the later start time.  The district ends up paying a 4 hour minimum for those buses even though they are only used for 2 hours, whereas with some shifting 25 buses could be reassigned to new routes, serve more schools per shift and save the district from having to pay for unused transporting hours.  The proposal also allows for bus routes to be shortened, thereby ensuring that kids' days aren't beginning too early since they aren't spending as much time on the bus.

The projected savings for the coming year with the change in start time at the two schools is $1.3 million.
The Board is scheduled to vote on the transportation proposal on January 20th.  Board members welcome your comments and feedback on this proposal.  You can find their contact information at http://www.seattleschools.org/area/board/contact.xml    Also, please contact FOSB Chairs Jane Davies at cj_davies@msn.com , Lance Adams at lanceadams@hotmail.com , or SB Legislative Liaison Kelly Bryant at kbryant96@yahoo.com if you have any questions about the proposal.

Garden Committee

The Garden Committee's goal is to maintain the lovely garden spaces around the Salmon Bay campus.  For instance, the plantings in the front of the school and the butterfly garden on the west side of the school.

We sponsor periodic work parties to clean and renew the plantings around the school.

Garden Committee Update 2/9/2011

Happy New Year to all!

Though the Gardening Committee has been hibernating since December during a most mild winter, it is time once again to get ready to join us once again starting Sat., March 5th.  We will meet once a month to weed and do any necessary pruning.

Our garden was installed by our Salmon Bay parents 9 years ago.  The vision was to have the front of the school be an educational garden.  A place for teachers bring the kids outside on the bench and learn.  The school district does have gardeners that come out and mow the lawn and pruning around the building, but as a parent group our committment to having a learning garden was to have school involvement in maintaining that dream, with our kids as well.

I feel compelled to keep our committee going, if we want a project then our work parties are great times to talk about ideas and work together.  Right now our funds are very little.  So, if we do have projects or plants you would like to see in our garden, then we need to talk about fundraising.  As for now, the schools focus is on our playground and I see our committee as a benefit and see us as a helping hand for that committee when the time comes.  So keep that in mind.

So folks mark down Saturday, March 5th, from 10-1.  See what we do, feel free to stop by for a little bit or the whole time, it really go by fast and our group of people are fun!

Look for our woodchip pile to be replenished as well!  Hopefully in the next couple of weeks!  We may be spreading those if they arrive before the 5th!

That is the Gardening update for now, stay tuned for April, May and June work parties.  Any questions, you can reach me by email.  Want to join?  Just meet us on the 5th.  Don't have "skills"?  Don't worry, if you want to learn, this is the place!  Ask questions.  It really is great to work in the dirt and in the fresh air.

So look for me in the green hat, on Sat. March 5th!  So eager to tidy up the winter mess!

Cheers~

Jen Millen
