PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

DearSalmon BayFamilies

You’ve noticed it’s darker, and colder, and hopefully your students are engaged and being challenged, as well as showing those amazing spurts of growth and learning.  The holidays are peeking around the corner and that means……it’s CONFERENCE TIME!!

By now you have signed up for a time slot with your student’s teacher. The official conference days are Nov. 22, 23, 24.  Some teachers will be starting a little bit earlier at the end of this week, and on the week end.  REMEMBER: THERE ARE NO CLASSES FOR STUDENTS NEXT WEEK.

Many of our conferences are “student led” conferences. This means your student will be present during the conference and review their work and accomplishments, as well as their areas for growth, with you themselves. They may do this by showing you some of their work, portfolios or notebooks. Teachers will also be involved, of course, in helping to round out that picture of how your child is progressing. Having students lead and participate in their conference is part of our work to empower students to be independent learners, and to “own” their education as well as help direct it, even though this happens in very developmentally different ways. We look forward to the experience.

Also a reminder: if your family plans to take a planned absence some time this year, you are required to fill out the planned absence form, which you can find on the website, in the “forms” section, in order for us to know that this is an excused absence.

In anticipation of a great holiday season, and a cozy winter (full of good reading for everyone), we look forward to kicking it off with you on SATURDAY at the PANCAKE BREAKFAST and FAIR TRADE FAIR FUNDRAISER. Please be sure to join us at 9:00 am till 12:00 for breakfast, with the fair continuing until 2:00 pm.

See you there! Enjoy your week, and take care.   Jodee

ASST PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Did you know…..

Tidbits that may be of interest to you……

Ski/Snowboard Rental Night–Thursday: Students may not stay at school without a parent/guardian. Doors will open at 5:00.

Parking-Please do not park on 19th Ave NW from the north end of the upperfield all the way to 65th. We have 11 yellow buses, 2 Boys and Girls vans, 4 American Logistics vans and 3 short yellow buses that must be able to fit along the street. Thank you.

Past week’s sneak peeks- Jodee and I were able to get out into classrooms together and were lucky to see the ‘mystery reader’ in Amy’s class reading “Bear Snores On…”

In another primary class we saw literacy stations; students reading phrases to buddies, students working on letter puzzles with a partner, students working with adults on flashcards and sight words.

In an intermediate class we saw students working on estimation and rounding.

The Marimba class played me a song “Heart and Soul” with heart and soul.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Tis the season to be THANKFUL

*Thanks to Audrey L, Cassy J, Drew D, Tracy C, Polly G and everyone else who made this year’s bookfair a terrific success.  Salmon Bay did over $11,000 worth of shopping that weekend, so over $2800 came back to our library to support buying books.  Very, very exciting.

*Thanks to our PIE committee, Patty M, Alexandra I, Karine D, Linda R, Robin L, for hosting Amy Lang and all of her good information regarding S*E*X* and our K*I*D*S.  Very informative.

*Thanks Jane D, Kelly B and Caleb BG, for opening up a great discussion regarding Salmon Bay and alternative education and what makes us unique, at the last FOSB board meeting.  Very inspiring.

*Thanks to Stephanie and Brett L, Teresa and Greg L and Caitlin and Katie, for presenting a great tasting, beautifully displayed, family friendly Spaghetti feed on Friday.  Very yummy.

*Thanks to Jen B for organizing, purchasing, modeling and selling all of the NEW SALMON BAY TSHIRTS>  We have lots in stock now and they are for sale Tues/Fri mornings.  Very pretty.

*Thanks to Jen, Julie, Louise and Rob for braving the elements on Saturday to put our Salmon Bay garden beds to bed.  The garden committee will take a well needed break until spring.

*Thanks to Mr. G and Jen B for starting a girls basketball skills training morning program.

All 3rd-5th grade girls are welcome.  Cost of program is a leather basketball.  More info below.

Tis the week to be INFORMED

*This Wednesday night at 6:00 at the John Stanford Center, the Seattle School Board will meet to discuss a very controversial proposal called TFA, Teach for America.  This issue will affect teachers, students and could have profound impacts on our school and district.   Marian Wagner, 4th grade teacher, will be attending the upcoming district meeting and would be happy to share information she has gathered.  Email her at mawagner@seattleschools.org.

*The Geographic Zone that has been designated for Salmon Bay, a proposed additional tie breaker for enrollment, is much larger than initially had been discussed.   More info is in the all school section. A meeting with Tracy Libros is scheduled in our neighborhood, at Ingraham HS on Monday Nov 22nd.  Please consider going to share your thoughts.  This issue could have a profound impact on our alternative experience at Salmon Bay.   If you have questions, contact your Salmon Bay FOSB board co chairs, cj_davies or kbryant96@yahoo.com or beth Armitage, an involved parent,  at barmtag@mac.com, who has been paying attention to the issue.

Both of these issues need our parent voice to support the ongoing discussion.

Please get informed and get involved.

Last bits… Hope you can make it to the Pancake Feed and Fair Trade fair this Saturday, peruse the Lost and Found before it goes away this Saturday and enjoy the work that your student and their teacher have done to be ready for you next week.

Thank you to everyone for your talents you give to Salmon Bay.

Enjoy your break and your family. Megan

SALMONBAYASSIGNMENT PLAN/GEOGRAPHIC ZONE UPDATE

This is district level info that affects Salmon Bay (and all option/alternative schools).

The district has released a draft of the geographic zones for option schools.  These zones will be used as tie breakers for getting into option schools. The tie-breakers will be 1-sibling 2-geo zones 3-lottery.  They had originally said that the geographic zones would be quite small so that if someone lived, say, across the street from Salmon Bay, they would have a pretty good chance of getting in.  In the proposed draft, however, the zones are huge.  They turn Salmon Bay, and all option schools, into, essentially, neighborhood schools, and make sure that anyone living outside the zones have very little chance of getting into the school.  (This is to relieve over-crowding at actual neighborhood schools due to the new assignment plan). What's more, it leaves entire sections of the city (including some where many of our Salmon Bay families live) with no access to ANY option school, because they do not fall into any of the option school geo zones.  Because they had always assured everyone that the geographic zones would be small, and that lottery would be the primary way (after siblings) of getting into option schools, this has been quite a surprise.  One of option/alternative schools main goals has been to provide access to everyone.  I encourage you to write to the school board and to Tracy Libros, enrollment manager, to ask them to reconsider and to ensure that option schools remain a choice for all families.

If you would like to comment on the expanded Salmon Bay Geographic Zone, please contact the entire school board to voice your opinion.  Names and emails are listed below.  Please also consider attending the meeting set up on November 22nd at Ingraham High School, to let Tracy Libros know your thoughts.

NORTHWEST REGION SCHOOLS
Our regional meeting is scheduled for:

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22
6:30-8 p.m. at Ingraham High School
1819 N. 135th St.

(However, families are welcome to attend any of the meetings noted below)

In 2009, the Seattle School Board approved a New Student Assignment Plan, school attendance area boundaries and a Transition Plan for 2010-11, the first year of implementation. The plan responds to what families requested during more than two years of extensive community engagement – a plan that is predictable, equitable and easy to understand.

Work has begun to create the Transition Plan for 2011-12, which will set out rules for the continued phasing in of the New Student Assignment Plan. Seattle Public Schools is seeking input from families, staff and community members to help shape the Transition Plan. A series of regional and drop-in meetings are planned. A recommended Transition Plan for 2011-12 will be presented to the School Board in January.

Among the topics included in the discussion will be development of geographic zones for option schools. The board will also be considering, among other topics, how the Transition Plan for next year will address non-attendance area kindergarten siblings; schools with over or under capacity enrollment; transition tiebreakers; transportation and high school open choice seats.

Regional meetings will include a presentation, question-and-answer session, discussion and opportunity to provide feedback. Interpretation services will be provided at each of the meetings, and light refreshments will be served. Child care will not be available, but books and drawing and coloring supplies will be provided. For additional information, visit the “Get Involved” page at www.seattleschools.org.

Raising Confident & Compassionate Kids

2 free talks coming up by the fabulous parenting coach, Lori Gradinger.

We will talk about why allowing our kids to make mistakes and experience adversity are such critical elements of growing up.  We'll also think about how to actually do that.......because sometimes we want to rescue and protect and we allow all kinds of fear to motivate us to stand in between our child and the consequences of their actions.  The most loving thing you can do , as a parent, is allow your child to experience their life.  If you don't believe me, I hope you'll come for the discussion!

Also: class placement information and schedules will come home to you sometime in August.

I’d like to thank you for all you do to make Salmon Bay School a true learning community. Without the support of all our parents and families, along with all the hours of volunteering and support you give, the experience for our students would not be the same. Our staff feel so fortunate to be able to partner with you, and your children, every year, always looking for new ways for students to learn and thrive.

Enjoy your summer! Don’t forget to spend time at the library, and read, read, read!

Take care

I’d like to thank you for all you do to make Salmon Bay School a true learning community. Without the support of all our parents and families, along with all the hours of volunteering and support you give, the experience for our students would not be the same. Our staff feel so fortunate to be able to partner with you, and your children, every year, always looking for new ways for students to learn and thrive.
Enjoy your summer! Don’t forget to spend time at the library, and read, read, read!

Take care
Jodee

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Volunteer Coordinator’s Notes: Whew, what a dizzying week, truly.   These last weeks are filled with so much energy and momentum (which for some might look like exhaustion and chaos) yet we all hopefully get to this day with smiles and satisfaction. If I could personally take the opportunity to shake everyone’s hand and give you a hug to thank you, I would. Your efforts make such a difference. Your presence around the school is so important. Your contributions on all levels from your family mean so much. Thank you for giving your time in the classroom. Thank you for serving on committee’s. Thank you for participating in fundraising and decision making. Thank you for continually supporting your student’s teachers and the staff. Thank you for always responding to my calls for help, well in advance or at the very last minute. A wise woman who taught me a lot about being volunteer coordinator, likened our school to that of a 3 legged stool, with families, staff, and teachers creating this wonderfully strong base for kids. Thank you for being such a strong, yet flexible leg of our school stool (gosh that sounds weird doesn’t it). I feel so very lucky to work in and be part of this
terrific community. Have a fun summer. See you in 78 days …
Your friend, Megan Ratcliffe
PS. Yearbooks went home today or tomorrow. I have extras if you didn’t get one. Thank you Cathy R and crew. They look fabulous.

THANKS, SO LONG and BEST WISHES!! The following is a heartfelt thank you to those families who have been part of this elementary for many years and are moving upstairs to middle school or moving on into their adventures. Thank you for your many years of dedication in all the ways that make Salmon Bay terrific.  We look forward to seeing all the great things you can do as middle school families.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hi Salmon Bay Middle School Families!

THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING!!!!

We had literally hundreds of parent volunteers this year to help with......
Fall camp, dances, Winter Enrichment (WEP), tutoring, classroom libraries, book leveling, staff lunches, drama stage work, school supply donations, staff appreciation, the bookfairs, 6th grade welcome, 8th grade promotion, parking for events, the school auction, lost and found management, teacher support, school tours, Jay's party......the list goes on!!!!!

We truly could not be the great school and wonderful community that we are without all of your time, energy and support!

THANK YOU!

Have a great summer! - Jessica

SCRIP NEWS:

A huge and hearty “thank you!” to all the families who purchased scrip last week, including some that were purchasing for the very first time! We were able to clear out nearly all of our scrip inventory, with only a bit of scrip for Snoose Junction Pizzeria remaining: 9 @ $10 and 9 @ $25. We will be selling scrip and offering coffee and treats tomorrow morning in the foyer, so be sure and swing by if you can!

I would also like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to Keith Slawson, Tracy Callahan, and Christina DeCarufel for faithfully showing up every week to man the scrip table! Because of these folks stepping up in this way (one way among many!), we are able to offer a variety of times that families can come in and buy scrip. You are appreciated!

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hello good people, here is lots of great info that everyone wants you to know…

LOST AND FOUND – Check through all the clothes/hats/lunchboxes in the cafeteria by Friday. It goes away Friday afternoon.   (by the way, how do kids lose pants or better yet, one shoe?)
LIBRARY BOOKS – Check in your car, your closets, your bookbags, your grocery bags for Salmon Bay library books. Linda has a very liberal lending policy and loves it when lost books are shelved where they belong for the summer.
LUNCH ACCOUNTS – Our lunch manager Arthurine is not allowed to feed kids who have a negative balance, so could you kindly pay if you owe so her books balance. Thanks
SCRIP TABLE – Last week of scrip inventory. Buy your gift cards from Alodie for all of your
end of the year gift giving needs.
NURSE JULIE – Remember any meds that your kids use at school should be picked up by next Tuesday or they will be destroyed. Thank you for taking care of this
ART HELP NEEDED – If you child has already gone to camp, their locker is oh so tidy and you are looking for a school project, could you help Barb in the art room. She could use a hand wrapping up for the year end. Bring lots of newspaper with you.
DID YOU BORROW THE CAKE DOCTOR from our IA Maureen Tameno? If you did, could you return it to the main office. Thanks
BANKING WINDOW – Last chance to deposit money this week. If you get a chance, please stop by the banking window and thank Linda Richards for maintaining our banking program this year. Her cheer and patience with pennies has been greatly appreciated. The banking program will continue with the help and monetary wisdom of Peggy Lynch. Thanks Peggy for stepping up.
FIELD DAY HELPERS – All those who are helping with field day, meet Mr. G on the upper field at 9:00 to get your assignments.  I am in need of two things for Field day…
  1. Help with creation of little mini water bladders. If you can fill 100 or so, come see me or look on my desk for bags of water balloons to be filled. Bring them for Field Day. Thx.
  2. Pick up of popsicles – (the best thing about Field Day) – if you can pick up some of that frozen fun before 11:30 on Friday, see me or email me – mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org.
ELEMENTARY YEARBOOKS – Will be handed out next week. The cost of the yearbooks is covered by your enrichment fees. Thank you to Cathy Rundell and crew for making sure there are photos of every student. Your commitment to photo equity is admirable.
DON’T FORGET: 5th Grade Promotion on Thursday night and the Elementary PE Talent show on Friday at 1:00 PM. We will also have our last Friday morning sing for the school year on Friday before the start of field day.

Can you believe it is the last full week of school? I cannot. I will be at 4th grade camp Tuesday and Wednesday. See you at Field Day. Megan

NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY:Middle School Parents: Yearbooks are coming! Amidst all of the excitement, please take a  moment to check in with your student about library materials. To receive their yearbook on time, students will need to have their books returned (or their lost/damaged books paid for) by the end of the school day on Wednesday (June 16th.) From Thursday on, students will first need to see me to resolve any outstanding library issues, at which point they can pick up their yearbook from Joel. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Email is the best way to contact me: laillman@seattleschools.org or you can give me a call at 252-1737. Please remember that parents can now check the Source for information regarding their students’ library account!

Important note for 8th grade students: Library accounts are now district-wide (like the Seattle Public Library.) To make sure that you start your high school career with a clean slate, please make sure you clear your Salmon Bay library account before you leave. Thanks! Linda Illman - Librarian/Ed. Tech.

Tech.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE:  If you want to check out the committee’s recommendations and some results of our recent survey, visit us on Facebook!  You do not need a Facebook account in order to look at our page:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Salmon-Bay-Playground-Committee/123070781051722In a nutshell:  Our timing is driven first by the district’s approval process, then by the award dates of two Neighborhood Matching Fund grants; construction, therefore, may be delayed until the summer of 2011 or sometime in 2012.  Thank you.  – Lance Adams (lancecadams@hotmail.com) and Robin Wise Lofstrom (robin@lofstrom.com), Committee Co-Chairs.

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPLORATORY CLASSES:
The Middle School teachers have worked very hard, in developing a list of exciting exploratory class offerings for the 2010/2011 school year.
An exploratory class is designed for all students to develop interest in a particular area and to explore the topic. Ideally, the student would rotate through all exploratory classes in the three years at Salmon Bay. The 6th and 7th graders were asked for their input last week, and we received great feedback. This will allow the middle school staff to offer the best range of exploratory choices. On June 11th the Middle School students will bring home their registration forms for you to assist them in their class selections, based on their interest.

MAP SCORES:
The MAP scores were sent home by kid’s mail on Friday, June 4th. Hopefully you received them. Middle School scores were mailed directly from the district offices.

Please join us in the activities planned for welcoming new families and saying goodbye to our departing families and staff. Check the calendar for dates.
