Principal's note

I want to wish you all a wonderful spring break!

Whether you will be traveling, or just taking a little time to relax with your children here in Seattle, I hope your break is also a time of learning and ideas for your student.

I was reminded last week, when we honored students who had demonstrated amazing learning (winning a national video contest, and a state geography bee) how important the idea is that learning is something that happens all the time, everywhere. It is not confined to the rigor and standards of a classroom.

As you know, a strong principle of our Salmon Bay School is to provide students a sense of learning that is connected to the world in as many ways as we can.  We also strive to bring that world into the school building, and to take students out to the community and natural world.

We will continue to work alongside you, and your family, to develop the deep understanding that important learning is everywhere!

See you bright and early on April 25.

Take care,

Jodee

PIE Game Night:

Thank you to the PIE committee for such a fun night of games and pizza.  My son is dying for the Ninja game and my daughter beat me at 7 ate 9 with ease. My brain and my reflexes just don’t work like they used to.

DANCE…The middle school students will be having a Spring Dance on April 15 from about 1:00-2:40 if you feel like dancing…please contact Jessica Phillips to join in the fun.

Tween Time/5th and 8th gradeitis:I’m certainly noticing 5th graders who are prepping to spread their wings, and 8th graders who are ready to flee the nest. Now is the time of year where we start to see students’ testing their independence, pushing that envelope, and so if you are seeing a little more attitude at home know that it is par for the course. If you haven’t seen the eye rolling or heard the “whatever” mumblings…enjoy. We are reminding students that they still have about two more months left of school and so they need to make good choices, any reminders you can do at home would be greatly appreciated.

Sneak Peeks:

I spent a day at West Seattle High School where I observed Math classes. I am confident that Salmon Bay Math students are prepared for high school Math. The importance of the group process and the exploration piece that are done in 6th and 7th grade helps lay the foundation for students to be able to have engaged, rich discourse about their thinking in 8th grade.

I observed two support classes where students were learning to prioritize what assignments they should do first and then working in small groups or individually on their assignments. The peer sharing and helping is something you always love to see.

In 6th grade science it has been  nice to see so many students rising to the occasion of Current Events and seeing science in current, every day life.

DANCE:  The Middle School Dance is scheduled for this Friday, April, 15th from 1 – 2:30pm.  Thank you volunteers!  We have plenty of chaperones and just enough snacks and supplies!

LOST AND FOUND:  Will be donated to our ASB clothing drive this Friday, April 15th.  Please be sure to check for any lost items before Friday!

SPRING BREAK:  Is next week!  There is no school from Monday 4/18 – Friday 4/22.  Have great week off!

THANK YOU!!!!  This Friday, April 15th will be my official last day as the Middle School Volunteer Coordinator!  L I have really enjoyed my time here at Salmon Bay!  And I will miss working with all of the parents, students and staff!  You have all been wonderfully supportive, committed and fun to work with!  Thank you for all of your volunteered time and energy.  This is a wonderful community and my children have had such a great experience for their middle school years.  My son will graduate in June and our family will move on, with both kids in high school.  I can’t say enough about how well my kids have been prepared for the high school years.  Salmon Bay does an amazing job of helping kids find their way in middle school and really jump into high school confident and academically prepared.   So, I am really saying good-bye as the Volunteer Coordinator, but also as a parent and family.  Thank you all so much for making my job so fun!  And Welcome Caitlin Racey!  You will begin receiving emails from Caitlin after spring break.  I will be a parent volunteer over the next several weeks helping Caitlin to settle in, and I will be sure to continue to check my emails and forward information to her as needed.  Thanks again!  I will miss you all very much! - Jessica

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION

Salmon Bay School Clothing Drive

It’s time for spring cleaning! Donate any gently used clothes (for any season) to help benefit Northwest Center. As part of our school’s ASB fundraiser, the ASB gets funds for Northwest Center based on the number of pounds of clothes raised. The clothing drive will end Wednesday, June 1. Donations will be collected in your student’s first period class, if you’re a middle school student or parent; if you’re an elementary student or parent, you may leave your donations in the office and Keith will pick them up and take care of them. Thank you for helping our school and our community.

Sincerely,  Jamie Smith, on behalf of the Salmon Bay Associated Student Body (ASB)

BEDBUGS! – Notes from Nurse Julie

Yes, bedbugs. Because of the increase of bedbugs throughout the nation, we are now starting to see bedbugs being brought into some buildings around our district. Although there have been no cases identified here at Salmon Bay, the district now has a procedure for dealing with them (identification, contact custodian, work order goes in for pest control treatment, etc). The other recommendation for prevention from the district administrators is to limit anything brought in from home such as pillows and stuffed animals, especially on “pajama days”.  That was specifically how the latest case got into a classroom.  ~Interesting topics as always,

Nurse Julie

FRIENDS OF SALMON BAY PARENT INFORMATION

FRIENDS OF SALMON BAY PARENT MEETING THIS THURS – APRIL 14th 7:00

FOSB's monthly meeting occurs this Thursday, April 14th at 7pm in the Library.  YOU are especially encouraged to attend this month as we are planning to share information about a proposal Jodee Reed sent to the Seattle School District requesting that Salmon Bay's Elementary program EXPAND TO TWO FULL-DAY K and TWO FULL FIRST GRADE CLASSES for 2011-12.  Jodee will provide historical background on the idea as well as the latest information on the proposal, some (not all) teachers will be on hand to provide their perspective, and parents will have an opportunity to participate in a community conversation about the proposal.

Additionally, we will also discuss the latest developments in Salmon Bay's playground replacement project.  Next-phase planning and funding efforts are close at hand; come hear how you can help turn the fabulous playground design into a reality for our school.

OTHER FOSB NEWS:

Tuesday Morning Coffee Chats!
Kill several birds with one stone....buy your scrip, have a cup of joe, buy a sweatshirt, and visit with other Salmon Bay parents (including Kelly and Jane, co-chairs of FOSB). It is a fun way to hear what is going on in and around school and get to know other parents.....and get your caffeine!  Every Tuesday morning around 8:30am in the lobby of school.

Playground Committee News: Join us Thurs at 6:00 PM prior to the parent meeting

We’re here!  The Salmon Bay School playground renovation is slated to begin in the summer of 2012.  What will Phase 1 and Phase 2 include?  What is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) playground, and how does it serve all children?  How will we raise money and conduct outreach over the coming months?

This Thursday at 6pm in our library, the playground steering committee will answer these questions and more, and stakeholders (that’s you!) are invited to attend, as well as stay for the 7pm meeting to follow.  At that meeting, our parent group will approve how the project will proceed in the coming months.  Background materials are posted online, and include the proposed budget, Phase 1 and Phase 2 images, an outline of fundraising strategies and potential grants, and an outline of the outreach efforts we’ll be doing next fall:  http://sites.google.com/site/letsplaysalmonbay/

Please join us, and help spread the word about this exciting project!  Thank you!

ROCK FER FOSB 10 – APRIL 30th -  BALLARD EAGLES

Mark your calendars for another semi-annual evening of Salmon Bay parents rockin' the joint: Rock Fer FOSB 10, Saturday night, April 30th at the Ballard Eagles! To celebrate this milestone we're shaking it up a little by having the first ever Salmon Bay Rock-A-Roke. What does that mean? It's a chance for all you closet and shower singers to share your talents with a live back-up band. The RFF House Band is putting together a book of favorite rock and roll songs so that you can step up to the mic and get your fifteen minutes of fame. There will also be a chance for guitar players to sit in on a few songs. If you're interested in participating and you like to plan ahead, send an email to vida@seanet.com and we'll get you the list of songs in advance. If there's a song you're dying to sing, let us know. Or just show up that night and pick a song from the book, just like karaoke, but live.

We'd like to open the evening with a few sets from musicians who have yet to play at Rock fer FOSB. There are so many talented folks at Salmon Bay. Any bands, duos, solos ready for prime time? We'd love to have you play. Let us know.

Your Rock fer FOSB team--Cameron, Alan, Penny and Michael

Robotics Team starting up!   (4th-8th graders)

ROBOTICS TEAM
(4th-8th graders)

Robotics team has started and still available for sign up.

We will meet on Wednesday in room 214 after school until 4:30.  (Note: There is no after school activity bus on Wednesdays).

The robotics team will be associated with FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL).  The team will design, build and program robots using the LEGO MINDSTORMS® Robotics kit.  Each year FIRST put's out a challenge to the teams in the league.   The challenge is released in September and the teams have about 2 months to create their robot and put together a presentation on a current science topic.  In December, teams will go to state qualifying competitions to participate in the Robot Game and to show their presentation.

We are forming the team now so that we can get some familiarity with what it takes to build and program robots. For this spring we will be meeting once a week on Wednesday after school for 2 hours.  In the fall, when we get to the regular season, we will probably need to meet twice a week for 2 hours, and maybe a couple of Saturdays.

Middle schooler's please sign up using OST forms.  Grade schooler's please sign up using after school activities forms (found outside Megan's office).

For more information, or if you would like to help, email the Robotics Team Coordinator tomkolar@comcast.net.

For more details on FLL see:  http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/fll

I'm at the table in the front of the building every day, Tracy is there on Thursday afternoons and I bring the box to FOSB meetings.  If you don't normally come in to the building, feel free to e-mail me and we'll figure out a way to connect.

We currently have Fred Meyer/QFC cards for $50, $100, $200 and $300.  Safeway for $100, PCC for $20, Starbucks for $10 and $25.

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

You deserve kudos, kudos, and more kudos!

Thank you for your “out of this world” support of the Salmon Bay at the auction.   Your generosity,  with both your checkbooks, as well as your time, was amazing. That support took so many shapes and forms: procurement, food, organization, hard work before, during and after, attendance, publicity, and, above all: PARTICIPATION.  Thank you! The energy from the event has flowed throughout the building all week, and beyond.  Our students are so lucky to have a true model of community to watch and learn from.

This week will take a moment on Friday to recognize a couple of our students.  In case you haven’t been aware of it, we often recognize students for their spirit of kindness, participation and responsibility when we do class assemblies.  One of our 7th grade students, Leo Pfeifer, won a second place in a national video documentary competition for C-SPAN. He also received some camera assistance from Ian Derby also in 7th grade.  We will also recognize Colin Fallon, 6th grader who, after winning the Salmon Bay Geography Bee, went on to the state contest and placed 9 out of 100 contestants.

Every day our Salmon Bay students continue to show their initiative and confidence as independent learners!

Have a good week!

Jodee

Middle School Reminder: As the weather gets nicer please remember the school does have a dress code policy to reduce the disruption at school.  For boys we tend to see sagging pants…but if we see boxer and briefs we will ask students to change or put on a belt. For girls often it is the spaghetti strap tops and the short skirts. We ask that there are no under garments showing (bra straps) and that the skirts are only 5 inches above the knee.  This is also on page 6 of their student planners.

Sneak Peeks:

Middle School LA class working on literary essays. It was nice to see students using different revision strategies. I watched one pair of students working together, and one read aloud the essay and the other tapped the table with a pencil if something sounded “off”.

In a math class students were learning to solve quadratic equations using the factoring method. Thank you to Canon for helping me out with values of a, b, and c….I was slow at first but eventually it all came back to me.

In another class students were learning to read text and find direct quotes. Some great biographies are being read Tupac, Joe Namath, Clint Eastwood, King Tut, Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, etc. I can hardly wait for Biography night…

PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION

BEDBUGS!

Nurse Julie

Playground Committee News:

Your Playground – Your Vote!  As we wind down for this year, here’s where we’re at:

  • We each get to vote as to scope and budget, and that vote occurs at the April FOSB meeting.
  • The playground steering committee will be in the library from 6:00pm-7:00pm before the FOSB meeting, presenting the following:
    • Phase I, which is modified somewhat from the concept presented at the Open House.
    • Phase 2, which brings back some of the elements from the current concept.

Please head into the FOSB meeting informed about each option, and be prepared to vote.  That’s the purpose of our 6:00pm meeting.

Remember, you can view Concept 1 on the playground’s website at http://sites.google.com/site/letsplaysalmonbay/, and in the cafeteria as well.  While there will be some time to discuss the project at the FOSB meeting where we vote, coming to the meeting beforehand will help move the discussion along and free up the agenda for other business as well.

Robotics Team starting up!   (4th-8th graders)
ROBOTICS TEAM
(4th-8th graders)

Robotics team is starting this week.

SCRIP NEWS

Did you know that by buying gift cards and using them for your weekly shopping, you help raise money for our wonderful school?  Scrip brings in about $5,000 a year.  That's money that could be used to buy classroom supplies!  And all you have to do is spend your money differently.  Easy as pie!

Have a great week!  Suzanne Waller suzaroo@gmail.com

Chess Club News for April

We will be making chess club t-shirts again this week.

If your child would like a shirt, just have them bring in clean t-shirt (color or white) and we will put the chess club logo on it.

We have found that shirts that have been washed at least once tend to take the ink better.

Bill Supports Alternative Schools, by John Miner, Thornton Creek Principal

The Washington State House of Representatives is working on HB 1521, a bill that would recognize schools of innovation in the state. Thornton Creek School is named within the bill as an example of an innovation school in Washington.

Parents, please write your legislator and our School Board directors to request their support for HB 1521. The passage of this bill will help with work that the alternative schools have embarked on within the district. Seven of Seattle's alternative schools have begun working with SEA and SPS to establish operational assurances that will support creativity and innovation within the alternative schools.

The more support for HB 1521 that legislators receive, the more likely that the bill will pass. You can find our Board members' e-mail addresses at schoolboard@seattleschools.org.

Thank you for your help!

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

I hope you realize you are a member of an amazing, incredible, and often unbelievable parent group at Salmon Bay School.  As parents, you put the real meaning into the phrase “whole school community.”  All the ways you support your student’s teacher, the classroom, school events, district involvement, as well as all the “extra” you do whenever you hear there is a need.

In my first weeks as a principal, I used to wake up in the middle of the night wondering, “What if…..or what if….”  I still wake up occasionally with those questions, and I still wonder, but I’ve learned that I would always have the expertise, encouragement and plain, simple friendship of parents, always willing to problem solve, and celebrate. Just imagine: parents who love having a spelling bee, and raise $1400 for the school at the same time!

If you have not yet found that place for you, and are still hoping to get involved, here are some possibilities.  You could get started this week!

  • Come to the monthly parent group (FOSB) meeting in the library Thursday at 7:00 pm.
  • Attend the district level PTSA meeting at the John Stanford Building, tonight at 6:30pm.
  • Help our parent volunteers, Jessica Phillips (6-8) and Megan Ratcliffe (K-5) with School Tours, starting this Tuesday /Thursday, or with Neighbor Appreciation Day, Saturday February 12
  • Attend theMARCH ON OLYMPIA TO SUPPORT PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING

Focus Day - February 21, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Thank you for being such an essential and giving group of the Salmon Bay School community.

Have a good week.

ELEMENTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS

DISTRICT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Important Science News:  Please Read!  Attention families who care about science

There are some steps being taken by the district administration that are going to affect the upcoming year’s science program.  These steps will have an effect on student learning in science.  The following seems to be more than a possibility:

  • Science is no longer part of the strategic plan for the Seattle School District
  • Professional Development classes in science have been cut for elementary and middle school teachers for next school year.  (That means that there will be no initial use classes for new teachers and no MSP classes.  There will be no science classes at all for K-5 and MS teachers.)

The school board needs to hear from teachers and especially parents, that science education is valued and needed.  These school board members need to be asked the hard questions:  Why has science been removed from the strategic plan?  Why is all science professional development for elementary and middle school teachers being cut for next school year?  Where is the support for teachers of science?

In this very special session, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most incredible paintings in history --- and then break them down to really understand the work in depth. For instance, what are clogs doing in the “The Arnolfini Portrait” and why is just one candle burning in the chandelier? And what does that mirror in the back really reveal?? We’ll unravel symbolism and find the hidden secrets located in plain view. We’ll learn that elite Egyptian women would wear scented animal fat cones on their heads on special occasions that would melt in the sun and coat their wigs with perfume.
We’ll shed light on fashions, lifestyles, politics, and people -
oh yes, and we’ll paint...a lot.
Let’s take a trip through history together, and discover fascinating little facts along the way.

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

Remember:  Early dismissal this Wednesday.  School finishes 2 hours early (12:35/12:40)

Teachers will be using their time this week to meet in an on-going professional learning community.  Each group has selected a focus and particular activities and professional development to support their goals.  This time, some groups will be looking at student work together, others will be reflecting on visits they have completed to observe each other’s classrooms, others will be planning a future observation with each other, others will be reflecting on some common reading.  This is valuable time for every teacher to take a breath and look collaborate with each other for more than just the few minutes that then can grab here and there during the day, and it is all focused on improving student learning and instruction.

Middle School Families:  Welcome to the first week of second semester!  Your student may have new exploratory classes to tell you about.  Their core classes may begin a new unit of study or project.  It’s also a good time to stay on top of things, get organized and get off to a good start. We appreciate all you do to help your student thrive at school, and arrive on time ready to learn.

Have a good Wednesday afternoon, and a good week as well.

Take care,

Jodee

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hurray for sunny, 5 day weeks, with an early release day in the middle.

Booster seats are still needed for our primary classrooms to help in making sure little tikettes are safe when they go on little field triplettes.  If you have one and don’t need it anymore, would you be so kind to drop it by my officlette.  Thank you much

Tour guides are still needed for next week’s first elementary daytime tour, which begins at 8:45.  We need cheerful folks who can help new prospective parents with simple questions like where do I go, how do you like it here and where did I park my car?  Please email me if you can help.  I need folks for approximately an hour.  Thank you much

Hobby horses are hardly played with anymore but are very needed and necessary for our upcoming Shakespeare play, “Twelfth Night”.  Shakespeare used hobby horses you ask?  Our Shakespeare does.  If you have a hobby horse that we can borrow for a few weeks, bring it in to my office and set it next to all the booster seats that hopefully are going to be streaming in. We also need a bench with a back so that Orsino can “recline lazily” while delivering his lines and we are in desperate need of

COWBOY BOOTS – sizes Chilren’s 3 to Women’s 9 Any donations of cowboy bootwear would be great!!

Spellers are still kneeded for this Saturday’s fun fundraiser, our adult only Spelling Bee, starting at 7:00 PM.  This fundraiser will bring some dollars to our school, giggles to your face and it will surely challenge your sense of spelling.   Haupe two cee ewe thair.  ( I might as well just give my $10 up now J)

Coffee makers are still needed for our coffee hour.  Do you love to make and share your coffee?  Well how about doing it at school.  Email me if you would like to help out our coffee hour on Tuesday mornings.  Thank you much

Lastly, for all the times you have laundry in your basket and dishes in your sink and you come to Salmon Bay to help us out in any way, Thank you much.  Have a lovely week.  Megan

AUCTION WINE GRAB

It's that time of year again... time to think about your favorite bottle of wine and one that you want to share with the other good folks of Salmon Bay.  Here's how it works.  We will have a wine grab where auction attendees can pay $25 and before they leave the auction they will get to grab a bottle of wine to go.  What will they get?  The hope is that they will get a great bottle of wine that will become one of their favorites as well!  The wines that end up in the wine grab are mostly $10-$30 bottles (with the occasional $30+!).  We are looking for your favorite wines to be donated - the ones that you buy as a gift when you're going to a friends house for dinner, or as a treat when friends come over.  For instance, I discovered a 2006 Castle Rock Syrah that is $14 and amazing.  That would be a good candidate for a wine grab donation.  Another idea is to get a case of your favorite wines so that you get the case discount, and then donate half of them to the wine auction!  Whichever way you choose, we would really like to make this year's wine auction a big event.  We've done this the last two years and sold out within the first 30 minutes of the auction and lots of people were disappointed they didn't get to participate.  And, if you have higher end bottles of wine, you can also donate those!  Anything around $30 or more will end up in the silent auction. Ready to donate?  Take your wine over to Michelle Chamberlain's house at 7023 22nd Ave. NW (just a couple blocks from school).  There's a trunk on the porch where you can put your donation and there will be a clipboard to note your name, what you brought and the approximate value.  Or you can give your bottles to Audrey Lee, Cassy Johnson or Kevyn Hauser.  Thanks for your help!  Cheers! EXCITING AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES FROM EARLY MASTERS ART STUDIO...

ZOOM IN! MASTERPIECES IN DETAIL

Mondays Feb. 7- March 14*  (no class on FEB. 21)  4-6pm

Principal's Notes

Principal’s Note

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

Today, our elementary students had their Peace and Justice Assembly to commemorate the Martin Luther King Holiday. Each class did something different: we had songs, skits, and choral readings…which included students demonstrating the March on Washington, the I Have a Dream Speech, the Rosa Parks story, and songs such as This Land is My Land,  and This Little Light of Mine.  It’s always gratifying to see students earnestly develop their own ideas, each year, so that by the time they are in 4th/5th grade, they have a real sense of the holiday and tradition.

This is the last week of the first semester for our middle school student.  A quick check with your student would be a good idea to be sure they have completed all the assignments for this grading period.  You can sit down with your student and look at The Source on line together, or e-mail the teacher.

We are still experiencing difficulties with our heating system.  The new boiler is working, finally, but now the old (circa 1930) fan is not.  We will troubleshoot this as soon as possible, but the parts will be difficult to locate. Please fill free to e-mail me if you have questions / concerns.

Have a good week.  With a big wish for snow, not rain, on the mountain.

Sneak Peeks

A primary class wrote some amazing number stories:

Another primary class spent time discussing empathy and what a good friend is.

In elementary PE students were learning how to dribble a basketball and using their arms as their shields.

An intermediate class celebrated the completion of their Read Aloud book, “Because of Winn Dixie” with egg salad sandwiches, pickles and candlelight.

Winter Enrichment was another day of deep learning:

Thank you so much for your patience and your support during the Friday morning drop off; waiting in line to turn right into the lot and driving slowly in the lot, and waiting patiently in line to turn right to leave the lot. We appreciate the waves, the smiles and the nods.

Love to see so many students exercising their independence and learning to self advocate. You see it in students carrying their own equipment, to students clarifying pick up times and locations with either parents or staff.

Hiking was another wet one, but it was a jaunt in snow shoes with students taking time to enjoy the scenery.

Team Sports not only engaged in some intense sweating sports but talked to students about centrifugal force, nutrition and hydration.

Both Seattle Tours and Taste of Seattle are continuing to learn about city transportation and the etiquette that is involved with public transportation. Seattle tours had the opportunity to go to Bainbridge Island and visit the Japanese American museum and Taste of Seattle toured the Fortune Cookie  factory and the International District.

Hien made it on the ice with the students and did some twirls.

Jewelry making had another fabulous trip to Space to Create and I saw students making key chains and necklaces.
