EATING LUNCH - INSIDE - FOR THE WEEK

After numerous attempts to reward students who leave their areas clean of trash, it’s come to our attention that it is not working.  Today juice cups were buried in wood chips, food scraps were stuffed in the middle of tables, food trays are scattered throughout corners of the playground, and trash was left on the wall near where basketball is being played.   It’s been very difficult of late to receive cooperation from enough people to have a clean playground.

No food is to be eaten outside by middle schoolers during lunch for this week.  All food eaten during lunch will be done in the lunchroom.  When students are finished eating, they are welcomed to come out and enjoy the beautiful warm weather.                              Michelle

Principal's Note 5/15/12

HelloSalmon BayFamilies:

Don’t forget: EARLY RELEASE DAY (2 HOURS EARLY AT 12:45).  While your students leave early, our teachers will assemble for their collaborative work in project based learning.  Each study group will be presenting to the whole group to fill us in on their work in the area of project based learning, and the entire group will reflect on our next steps towards deepening this kind of learning at Salmon Bay.

I know I speak for the entire staff when I give you a big THANK YOU for all your notes of appreciation, and all the wonderful food and goodies, you provided for our teachers last week.  Teachers do work long hours, long beyond their contract, and would do it no matter what, but it always feels good when someone notices.

This is a wonderful time of year—very rich and full—with classes heading off to camp, students doing culminating projects, special events for the whole school—it’s all amazing—and there are some good examples both last week and this.  I hope you had the opportunity to see school play, The Matchmaker, wasn’t it fun?  This week, there is a great example of project based learning: 6th grade Biography Night.  Don’t miss it!  Students have all researched a person of their choice, and will “perform” as in a living museum, spread out among many classrooms and library, all on the second floor.  You can wander among the locations, go up to a student and “push” their button to begin,  and they will spring into life and educate you about their person—oh, and the best part—they will be in costume to assume the persona of their research subject. Dave and Bill’s classes are off to camp Thursday and Friday—could the weather be any better?

Have a great week!

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Have you gotten into the groove of May yet?

The groove of MR. G– There are still spots for parents and kids to participate in Mr G’s Family Fun Fitness night (an auction sign up event) this Friday starting at 6:30 in his gym.  $10 per participant.

Email me if you are interested.  Checks made out to FOSB.  Bring your sneakers and your smile.

The groove of Bike Month – This Friday is it bikers.  The official day when everybody bikes everywhere.  You have been training all month to officially take over the streets.  When you get to school, there will be apples and a lot of folks on bikes.  Be patient here at school, wear your helmet, watch for cars, watch for kids, be safe on your ride in and have a great start to the day.  The lower playground will have spots to help with bike storage.  Speaking of storage…

The groove of early release– Where will we store all those kids whose parents accidentally forgot that it was early release on Wednesday?  In our kindly office of course.  Don’t forget, school’s out at 1:30 this Wednesday.  Speaking of Wednesday, which comes after Tuesday…

The groove of our all school parent FOSB meeting/Volunteer Appreciation – Please join us on Tuesday night to learn about our upcoming director slate, our parent body budget, bylaw discussion, and a summary of the year.  We hope to see you there.

The groove of teacher appreciation– Dang, thanks to you, all of our staff got into a groove of heading up to the 3rd floor teacher’s lounge and enjoying each other, time and wonderful food, gifted by wonderful parents.  Thanks for all of the love and care.  All of your dishes are outside my office.

The groove of bouncy balls– Well they are not groovy, they are bouncy but WE NEED THEM.  We have no pogo balls for our kids at recess.  We are looking for donations of bouncy balls, available at Fred Meyer or Top Ten Toys.  Please deliver them to Megan, Caitlin, Anthony or the main office. Thx

The groove of being a middle schooler at Salmon Bay– Hey 5th graders!! Hopefully you all received your official letter to join us next Monday night, 7 PM for your personalized welcome to 6th grade.  It is a social.  It is fun.  It is very worthwhile to come to. You get to see friends, old and new.

The groove of throwin’ a potluck – Save the date.  It is back.  Our Aloha Potluck.  We are going to throw a potluck party for the whole school this year to wrap up the year, say Aloha to a few staff (sadly myself included) and celebrate the process of moving up to the next grade.   More details are below.  Suzanne Waller is leading the charge and needs help, that she has listed below.  Aloha!

The groove of rock and roll– The counts are still coming in from our most recent Rock fer FOSB event.  Thanks to all of the singers, players and enjoyers!

Lastly, hopefully you all received the information regarding the transportation update and how the start times for next year, will most likely be what they are for this year.

Also, we have a new face around Salmon Bay.  Our daytime custodian, Binh, has moved to the evening schedule and Jan Opland, has joined us during the day.  Thanks to Binh and Jan for all they do.

Lots to groove on.  Enjoy that sun
Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

HelloMiddle SchoolFamilies-

2 hour early release this Wednesday 5/16-  Your students will be coming home 2 hours early this Wednesday so that their teachers can participate in professional development activities with their colleagues.

Thanks for all you did to appreciate our staff last week!    As always the staff was bowled over by the outpouring of appreciation that was showered on them all last week.  I had countless people say how lovely it was to gather together as a group and eat and visit during their lunch which is something their busy schedules don't allow them to do very often.  They wanted me to be sure and let you know just how much they appreciated your appreciation!  If you have dishes you need to pick up they are on the table outside my office.

Annual FOSB Parent meeting is tomorrow Tuesday 5/15 at 7 PM in the cafeteria-  Please join us for our annual meeting as we elect directors for the next year and say a thank you to all our amazing volunteers.

Please help us welcome our new daytime custodian, Jan Opland.   Binh is moving to the afternoon shift and Jan will now be taking care of all our daytime needs.

Playground balls needed-  Our playground ball bin is empty and we still have 6 weeks left of school.  We could use playground, soccer, basketball and footballs if you could donate any.   Please leave them in my office and I will get them to the ball bin or you can give them to Anthony.

Bike to school day is Friday 5/18!  If your child is biking to school that day please remind them to take extra care as there will be lots of 2 wheeled traffic. For safety they need to remember to get off and walk their bike once they reach school grounds.

Thanks and have a great week,

Caitlin

FOSB NEWS:

 Next FOSB Meeting: May 15th

At our next FOSB meeting, tomorrow night, Tuesday May 15th, we will elect officers for the upcoming school year. We still have seats open for Directors. FOSB Directors agree to attend our monthly meetings and stay current on issues facing the school, which provides continuity as we move through our year. It is a great way to learn about issues at Salmon Bay and work with other parent volunteers. If you have questions or are potentially interested, please contact Jodi Russell (reddsell@comcast.net).

Our next FOSB meeting also serves as our annual meeting. We would like to recognize individuals who have volunteered this past year...please join us!

LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION

SalmonBayparent, Zara Kublin, is helping organize the following event: a panel discussion about what is going right with public education. We have as much to learn from our successes as from our mistakes, yet we talk almost exclusively about what’s going wrong. We can’t help public education if we don’t know what works. Please come and join the discussion with our panel of educators.

When students are finished eating, they are welcome to come out and enjoy the beautiful warm weather.                              Michelle

Principal's Note 5/7/12

DearSalmon BayFamilies:

This is one of the wonderful weeks in the year: Teacher Appreciation.

Our teachers, like most teachers, go above and beyond expectations every day. The use their own time all year long to give students the best experience they can.  They juggle a hundred balls in the air and stay focused as well as ready to respond to whatever the day may bring.

They love learning, and truly want all students to fulfill their dreams and potential. They care about  big-picture issues in education, participate collegially district-wide, city wide and of course in our own school.  And will pay attention to the smallest detail if it means helping as student succeed.   Every year our parent group does an amazing supplying love and treats this week, and I know how much the teachers appreciate the TLC, and those special notes from both parents and students. Today, we all received a similar message from Susan Enfield, superintendant,  who also reminded the teachers, parents and adults to remember a teacher in their own life who made a difference—so I encourage you to do that this week as well.

There should also be a special week at Salmon Bay for Parent Appreciation.  We could go off the charts talking about all the ways you embrace the idea of community and are always ready to roll up your sleeves and help out.

Let’s take this time to say a big thanks to our GARDEN COMMITTEE!!!!  They come throughout the year and give such affectionate care to our grounds and gardens.  We are the envy of many a principal I can tell you that, when they come here for meetings or drive by….  Our children enjoy being able to use the grounds for all kinds of assignments and investigations….it’s not unusual to see a whole class out my window, poking around for insects, drawing leaves and trees, and, as I write this, practicing for guitar class outside in the sun on the stone wall.  But the hard work in spring, winter, and getting things spruced up for the opening of school is amazing and I want to be sure that all of you who help with this know how much the students and teachers feel happy to have such a nice outdoor space to learn in.

Have a good (sunny!) week!

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

HelloMiddle SchoolFamilies!   Welcome to the most festive week of the year for this building, Staff Appreciation Week!  This is a great time to let your teachers know how much you appreciate all they do for your student by sending them a note, a treat or perhaps singing them a song you wrote for them which you can then sing in front of your Middle Schooler, which they would appreciate as well!  Whatever you do please know that the staff always feels so well taken care of this week and enjoy all of the well deserved strokes.

Winter Enrichment Balances-  We still have quite a few outstanding balances for WEP and need to get those addressed before the end of the year.  Please get in touch if you think you might have an outstanding balance and we can let you know how much it is.

Kate Davis is back!-  Middle School teacher Kate Davis has returned from maternity leave so you can direct your questions to her again.  A big Thank You to Dominique for doing such a fabulous job of covering her class and I bet we will see him soon as a substitute.

Lost and Found is going away tomorrow!!   We will be donating items to a charity, so make sure and check in the morning if you are missing anything.

Annual FOSB Meeting Tuesday May 15th 7PM in the Auditorium-   This is our annual meeting to elect directors and thank volunteers and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

ROCK- A- ROKE  Saturday May 12th at the Ballard Eagles at 8 PM-  Come and do Karaoke with a live band or just watch others brave the jitters and perform like a rock star.   A really fun night and popular fundraiser for our school.

8thGradeHigh SchoolRegistration

On Tuesday, May 8th at 1pm-1:50, high school counselors from the district will be coming to Salmon Bay to register our 8th graders to high school classes.  The purpose of the “meet and greet” is to give our students an opportunity to hear a little about enrolling in some of the extra-curricular activities available and to sign up for elective classes.  Please refer to any information sent to you by your child’s assigned high school on information on enrolling into Honors courses or IEP services.  Please direct any questions you have on the event to me.  Thanks, Anthony Malaki, Counselor, 252-1742 or eamalaki@seattleschools.org.

8THGRADE PROJECT UPDATE

8th grade project update—Students met with Melanie on Friday to talk about presentation plans.  We looked at presentation boards and talked about formats for planning their visual aid, and reviewed rubrics.  Presentations will probably happen during the week of June 11-15, though not on June 12 due to the end of course exam for algebra.  The students would like to have a potluck celebration on Friday, June 15 as part of the evening celebration; this will only happen if parents take it on and make it happen.  Please let me know if you can help, you can reach me at meshelton@seattleschools.org.

Salmon Bay (Elementary) and the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation invite you to join our elementary team for Bike to School Month, May 2012

May is Bike to School Month, designed to encourage bicycle commuting, mentor newriders and foster a love of bicycling.  When you bike to school with your child you:

  • Help your child become a safe, knowledgeable and independent cyclist.
  • Create daily exercise habits that help keep your child active and healthy.
  • Reduce car traffic and air pollution.

We envision participation in Bike-to-School Month as a family project, one that may also introduce parents to the fun of cycling with their kids! Everyone who rides at least once wins a prize!

So, how do you participate?  It's easy! Look for a Bike to School RSVP/permission form from your school coordinator Marian Wagner and turn in to the BTS box in the office or to Marian by April 30th.  Once you turn that in, we will give your teacher the Bike to School Passport/Calendar to take home to keep track of your rides. At the end of the month, you will need to turn in the Passport/Calendar to the BTS box in the office or to Marian by Monday, June 4 to be eligible for prizes. For more information check out Cascade's website at: http://www.cbcef.org/bts/index.html.

Great resource for parents regarding biking & walking to school.  It is a site specifically for all Seattle schools promoting sharing of information regarding all things biking, walking, etc.

NEWS FROM KEITH MCLAREN – MIDDLE SCHOOL SPECIAL ED TEACHER

DearSalmon BayFamilies –

I am writing to let you all know that I will not be coming back to Salmon Bay next year. I recently accepted a Ph.D. fellowship at the University of Connecticut, starting this coming fall. My family and I will be leaving at the end of the school year.

I want to thank you all for making me feel like part of the community, whether it was my role as teacher, coach, administrative intern, or parent. I’ve been able to see all of the different ways in which Salmon Bay works, and it has been so much fun! My wife and I have been very grateful to be involved in a learning community that cares about finding ways to restore and maintain all of the wonderful pieces of a full educational experience for our children. My daughter, a 7th grader, has been one of the beneficiaries of this kindness and dedication in our community. Each of us has been able to make lifelong friends in our time at Salmon Bay.

I will miss more about this school than can be written in this bulletin. I have been blessed with the chance to work with the most incredibly dedicated group of teachers and staff every day. The programs, experiences, and interactions they provide your children turn a normal school experience into a profoundly enriching one. I learn something new about my craft every day I sit in a class and interact with a teacher. I will also remember all of the students I’ve taught, supported, coached, or counseled. They are a wonderful group of kids who have made each of my days at this school busy but fun.

Thank you for providing me and my family with a wonderful school experience!

Happy trails…

Keith McLaren

FOSB NEWS:

Retreat Thanks...

A big thank you to everyone who attended our annual retreat this past Saturday. A special thank you to all the staff who attended! What a wonderful chance to share ideas and learn from one another. Thank you!

District Transportation News:

SPS transportation staff are reviewing options for revising the District's transportation plan for next year. Last week, a presentation was made to the School Board that outlined three arrival/departure times for schools. Schools are currently divided into tiers and under the new proposal, changes would me made so that Tier One schools would have buses arriving as early as 7:10 am. Tier Three schools will have later start and end times. The school district has not communicated which schools will be assigned to each tier. Some schools will potentially be moved to different tiers, requiring a change to current start and end times.

This is a proposal and will be voted on in the next couple weeks. We are working to collect information for you and will be following up with an email to parents in the next day or two. Watch for the email. It will contain email addresses and ideas on how to best voice your concerns regarding these potential transportation changes. Information is also available on the district website at: http://www.seattleschools.org/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=268319&sessionid=5488f48b61ff6662913bda88a9f06889

 Next FOSB Meeting: May 15th

At our next FOSB meeting, May 15th, we will elect officers for the upcoming school year.

RFF 12: RETURN OF ROCK-A-ROKE. MAY 12thSATURDAY NIGHT

Reminder: Rock For FOSB 12-Return of Rock-A-Roke is coming right up, Saturday May 12 at the Ballard Eagles, 5216 20th NW, 8 pm. The RFF House Band will be ready and willing with over 40 songs on the list, waiting for you and your friends to step up to the microphone and rock out. See you then!

Purl and Unfurl

There will be no more Purl and Unfurl nights for the rest of the school year due to the hectic schedules of parents everywhere these last two months of school.  It has been great getting to know some more wonderful parents we have in the school.  I will see about starting this up again next year.  It would be great to have others host a Purl and Unfurl night in their home.  Please email me if you are interested or have suggestions for a better evening or time @ hortusgardens@yahoo.com .  Thanks for participating this year...Karine.

MENTORS FOR NEW FAMILIES NEEDED:

Do you remember what it was like to be new at Salmon Bay?  We are looking for volunteers to be mentors to new parents at Salmon Bay next year at all grade levels.  Would you be willing to spend time to be available to answer questions, explain the Salmon Bay way, and orient new families to Salmon Bay.  If you are interested in supporting new families in this way, and being a mentor, please email Sarah Kopf at kopfpatterson@earthlink.net .  Thanks!!
