PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

Thank you for being such a strong, important piece in your own child’s education, but also for everything you do to participate in the life of the school community and the support that provides for all students. This week and next offers you more opportunities to be part of that community, both to participate, but also to help out: the social events on Tuesday and Wednesday to welcome new families just assigned to Salmon Bay, the Middle School Cabaret on Friday showcasing student work, the 8th grade project night on Tuesday also showcasing student work, of course 5th and 8th grade promotion, Elementary Field Day and PE talent show on Friday, the 8th grade picnic on Monday, and middle school Panther Day on Tuesday.  Many of these events invite you to be included in your student’s end of year celebration, as well as provide an opportunity for you to help out in order to make it happen.  We are happy that our students think it’s just right to see their parents in the classroom and at school events—because you are the most important part of their educational team. If you do have some extra time this week or next you can always check in with Megan, or Caitlin, our parent volunteer coordinators.

A specific call for help: We will be setting up new classrooms in the elementary this fall.  If you would be willing to help with that sometime this summer, can you call Megan and give her the times you would be available?  Thanks!

Megan Ratcliffe: mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org  Elementary Parent Volunteer Coordinator

Caitlin Racey: caracey@seattleschools.org Middle School Parent Volunteer Coordinator

Have a good week.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Did you know………..

The end is near…students can smell summer in the air. Unfortunately, we still have seven school days. We are reminding students for safety reasons where they need to be before school hours.

Elementary students should be outside on the playground where we have adult supervision provided from 8:00-8:25.

6th graders may be outside or in a supervised classroom from 8:00-8:20.

7th/8th graders may be outside or in a supervised area from 8:00-8:20.

8th grade camp was a huge success due to the fabulous student behavior, the amazing supervision and planning of parents and staff.

The elementary talent show was timed perfectly and was well organized and ran by students and staff. The talent was engaging and entertaining.

5th grade project night was well attended and a wonderful opportunity for students to show their interest and skills. Many of the projects inspired me. I can’t decide if I should look into Parkour, try archery, bake some popovers.

While 8th graders were at camp…education continued for our 6th/7th graders. 7th graders were able to do a hands on lab around the effects of the fats in milk and laundry detergent and then applied what they found to the BP oil spill. They also had an experiential, walking Math lesson to the Ballard Locks. 6th graders dabbled in Marimbas, and were able to still have all their core classes.

In elementary PE students are preparing for another wonderful day of showcasing pyramids, climbing ropes and unicycling.

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Last full week of school for you to enjoy.  Lots to share with you…

5th Grade Families – Don’t forget that tomorrow night is the 6th grade welcome.  Many folks will ask if their student has been at Salmon Bay through all of elementary, is it worth going to the 6th grade welcome.  A whole hearted YES!!  It is a good opportunity for the 5th graders to begin the transition from elementary to middle school and become a little more familiar with the 6th grade staff as well as meeting some new kids that will be joining our kids on the first day of school (a mere 85 day away) so come join the 6th grade welcome, at 6:30 PM in the stage area  (did I mention there will be ice cream).

FIELD DAY -  I need two things for field day.  More parent helpers during the day and some folks to help fill, tie and store small latex water carriers.  If you can do either, please contact me soon. ( did I mention how hard it is for just one of us to fill 500 small later water carriers all by themselves?)

PE TALENT SHOW – Will be happening for the whole elementary on Friday after lunch.  Join us in one of the gyms to watch all the athletic mastery that lives in our school.

SOLSTICE PARADE–  Thanks to the Mason/Wenokur family, the folks of our school have had a long and fun relationship with the Fremont Solstice parade and this year is no different.  If you and your family would like to walk in the Solstice parade this Saturday with other Salmon Bay families, meet up at 36th and Phinney at 11:00 AM, wear a combo of black/white/red and be prepared to be entertained.  More info below.

MARY K NEEDS YOUR KIDS (She also really likes them too)– Mary K McNeill is looking for some Salmon Bay kids to join her and Jonah Falk next Monday night at Nathan Hale high school for a performance.  No rehearsals between now and then.   More info below.

MR. G SUMMER CAMPERS– If you have not turned in your registration for the Mr. G summer camp, (more info below) please do so before the end of this week.  It will help tremendously, thank you.  There is still room in both camps for more kids interested in hanging with Mr. G.

PLAYGROUND COMMITTEE – YOU ROCK!!!  Thank you to Robin Lofstrom and Lance Adams and all of the Playground committee for being awarded the $100,000 Neighborhoods Grant for the next stage of our playground development plan.  The $100K will fund the foundation work of the project. WOW!   Thank you !   SUPER!   Way to go!    Your community appreciates the effort.

Enjoy this full week of celebrations, beginnings, transitions and busy-ness.

Hope to see you at Field Day.  Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

8th Grade Camp- Camp was busy and went off without a hitch.  It couldn't have happened without the many parent volunteers who made it possible.  Thank you so much for helping to give the 8th graders this wonderful experience.

8th Grade Project Night - Tuesday, June 14 7-8:30 pm, third floor classrooms

Please come and wander through classrooms to see 8th grade project presentation boards and powerpoints.  Students have worked very hard and it’s a wonderful opportunity to see what they’ve learned and produced.  Students may be available to answer questions or summarize their topics, but it’s really a self-directed evening to wander and explore…hope to see you there!

Middle School Exploratory Formsthat were sent out last week….  were missing 2 classes that will be offered next year.  Peer Tutoring and Food/Culture/Healthy Eating (2nd semester only)were left off of the form. The attached NEW/Revised form has the corrections on it and is ready to go.

I am at camp with my 3rd grade daughter until Wednesday afternoon so if you need me for anything please contact Megan Ratcliffe mcratcliffe@seattleschools.org and she would be glad to help you.

Thanks and have a great week!   Caitlin

GLOBAL WATER DANCE PERFORMANCE – JUNE 25th , Saturday, 5:00 PM

Greetings Salmon Bay Families,

I want to let you know about an exciting performance opportunity for your child.  On June 25th a Global Water Dance event will take place on Kite Hill at Magnuson Park at 5pm.  This is one of fifty-five similar events happening all around the globe in an effort to raise awareness on issues concerning safe drinking water everywhere.

I am choreographing a dance for this event and will also be setting an improvisation called Waters’ Playground for my elementary school students. This is a dance structure that your child will play with and practice at school.  If your child is interested in joining in the dance they will need to be on Kite Hill at Magnuson Park by 4:30 on June 25th.  They should arrive in comfortable blue clothes and secure shoes.  We are hoping for a beautiful sunny day, but will dance rain or shine.

If you have questions please feel free to email me at mkvadino@comcast.net. Or if you are interested in learning more about this global event go to www.globalwaterdances.org .

Please let me know by June 10th if your child will be able to join in the dance.

Thank You.

Peace, Mary Kay Vadino

CHILDREN COME SING!!!!  Perform with Jonah Falk and Mary K. at Nathan Hale

June 20th, 5:30 Arrival, 6:00 PM Performance, Nathan Hale High School

Authors of Change Project

Many of you are familiar with Jonah Falk.  He is an alum of Salmon Bay Elementary and currently a sophomore at Nathan Hale.  Jonah performed at the Salmon Bay Auction this year and at a Friday morning sing.  He has shared his "hip-hop" style with several classes and performed one of his pieces with some of our students  at the International Children's Festival at Town Hall.  He has been invited to perform at the "Authors of Change" Project at Nathan Hale on June 20.  Jonah asked Mary K. to collaborate on his most recent piece and she has written a chorus to be sung by elementary children.  WE NEED CHILDREN TO COME SING WITH JONAH as he performs this hip-hop piece.  Mary K. will be there to help lead the children.

The children will learn the chorus this week.  We might need one after school rehearsal with Jonah between now and the 20th.  If your child is interested and you are willing - please email Mary K. and rsvp.  mkmcneill@mac.com

Black and White and Red All Over! 2011 Fremont Solstice Parade, Sat June 18th!

For the tenth year in a row, Salmon Bay School is mustering an ensemble for the Fremont Solstice Parade coordinated by Cameron Mason. Thanks to Jay Dotson, we will have a giant red and white beach ball to kick around the street and roll over the crowds. Dress in black and white and red all over and bring your own beach ball for fun in the streets. Costumes? Sure, as long as they fit the theme (a newspaper suit? a skunk? a nun?) and abide by the rules of the Solstice Parade: no written words or logos, no motors (except for motorized wheelchairs), and no live animals (leave the pooch at home). Send an email to vida@seanet.com to let us know you're interested.

FOSB 2011-2012 Budget, Final Draft Available for Review

The final draft of the FOSB budget for 2011-2012 is available for review.

Download the spreadsheet file here: friends_of_salmon_bay_school_2011-12_draft_budget.xls

We'll discuss the budget at the May 12th FOSB meeting.

School District Transportation Maps for Ballard Schools (Salmon Bay Stays the Same)

Update: The transportation maps don't include Salmon Bay school.  I emailed the district and was told that "because Salmon Bay is an "option school" there will be no changes to transportation eligibility next year." -- David Innes

---

From the Seattle Public Schools website:

In the new transportation plan, transportation eligibility for attendance area elementary and K-8 students will be based on transportation zones.

Students within the transportation zone and outside the walk zone for a school will be eligible for District-provided transportation.

Students outside their immediate transportation zone, but within their extended intermediary boundary, can walk to an attendance area school for bus pick-up if they live within a safe walk zone (up to one mile). Otherwise, they walk up to a 1/2 mile to a regular neighborhood stop. This is a temporary option to extend transportation for two (2) years (2011-12 & 2012-13).

  • Transportation Zones will include the entire attendance area of a school
  • Transportation Zones will extend to areas within a 1.25 mile radius from the school and within the middle school service area
  • Walk zones to schools will still apply.

Principal's Note - March 21st, 2011

Final review of the new playground design will take place on Wednesday in the cafeteria/auditorium at 6-8:30. There will also be pizza! And you can drop in during that time frame to view the design and give feedback. The more feedback we get, the better.

The Salmon Bay AUCTION is Saturday, March 26. I can’t emphasize enough that this is a party and celebration as much as anything else. A potluck extraordinaire. Great fun. A good way to come together as a community. Michelle Ota, our assistant principal, will especially appreciate your support, as this is the one auction I will not be able to attend (a previously scheduled reunion in Utah). Please make every effort to come.

Finally, something we can never say too often: Thank you for sending your student to school every day ready to learn, and ready for the next big idea.

Have a good week. Jodee Reed, principal

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Did you know..... Tidbits that may be of interest to you...... Michelle Ota

Countdown to the auction....I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the auction this coming Saturday, March 26th at North Seattle Community College. It’s a chance for us to celebrate with our school community. Please walk bikes, scooters and skateboards until buses have departed from the school. We want to make sure everyone is safe and the sidewalks are so congested after school with pedestrians rushing to their buses.

Sneak Peeks:

Unfortunately I was at Broadview Thompson on a learning walk so I did not get to observe Ohana last week. But some quotes from others about Ohana were: “...an amazing job of modeling compliments (taking time at the beginning of the session to give each student a thoughtful compliment which they just LOVED). At the end of the session each kid had a poster full of compliments and a huge grin on their face!!

“...The compliments were awesome – all of my kids were really inclusive. We also ended with the “I’m proud of...” exercise. My group started clapping after each person, and it was so cool to hear what the kids are holding near and dear.”

In an Intermediate class the students were studying Rocks and Minerals, they were given about 5-6 rocks and the teacher read a description of a rock and the students would then make a prediction on what rock it could be.

In the cafeteria on March 17th                  I was amazed by all the different food items that could be green; bagels, cream cheese, bread, chips and cookies... quite a bubbly day.

On my learning walk at Broadview our learning community looked at student engagement. We observed an amazing 3rd grade math class that did whole group instruction and then moved into small group work with two other adults supporting the class; some students reviewed the lesson around estimation, others worked on some review of number facts and some worked on independent work.

I also got the opportunity to teach a middle school elective class 6th period. Students looked at early architecture and compiled a group poster looking at lighting, layout and materials.

This week, millions of thanks goes to....

Our Elementary tour guides, Jean L, Beth A, Kelly B, Jutta E, Robin L, and all of the teachers and kids for patiently guiding prospective parents through our school community. Thank you for representing our community so thoughtfully and positively. Lots of great feedback about what the new eyes of non Salmon Bay parents see.

Our PIE committee and Caleb Banta Green for hosting a popular, well presented evening last Monday night regarding health, drugs and our kids. Hard topic, good pie.

Our Playground committee, who are wrapping up months of meetings, discussions, input, design thoughts and potential ideas, with their open house to show off what is next, this Wednesday night at 6:00 – 8:30.

Our Garden committee, who created more bags of yard trash than we have ever seen. The gardens look so tidy and ready to welcome their long lost friend.... SPRING.

Our Alternative Ed committee, Caleb BG, who is compiling all of the data that you all so kindly provided him through the Alt Ed Survey.                  Results will be discussed at this year’s board retreat, which happens to be on Saturday April 9th from 9 – 2. (Potluck lunch, place tbd)

Our Budget committee, who took time and thought to help craft a responsible budget for FOSB for next year, considering the many scenarios that known and unknown for our parent group at this time.

Our Auction committee, who have done what auction committees do and they have done it so thoroughly. They email late at night, they ask all of their friends for favors, they commit themselves to yet another class project, they mentally keep track of over 350 items, they paint anything that is not moving- silver, they try to find the very best way to ensure Salmon Bay parents will have a great time at this year’s event by hopefully; meeting all sorts of new friends, giggling with some old friends, finding they won a bid on an item they loved or didn’t even know their partner bid on, perhaps winning a raffle, for sure getting their photo taken, walking into the room and being amazed by the decorations and sounds of a funky band, spending not too much – but just more than enough, winning a new favorite bottle of wine, trying and tasting the dad’s home brew, combining that brew with a fancy new appetizer, smiling at all of the talented costumes, being impressed by all of the creative elementary class projects and abundant middle school baskets and perhaps most of all, being able to say you bid highest on a dozen farm fresh eggs to start off our live.                  We hope you come, we’ve tried to make it fun, the catalog is done, so be sure & check it out. http://www.salmonbayschool.org/auction/auction_catalog

CALLING ALL PARENTS - KATE DAVIS 7th/8th LA Teacher needs you

Dear Parents,

I have been looking for fun ways for students to practice spelling and vocabulary and have recently discovered the card game, Quiddler. In this game, players compete by spelling words from cards in hands of increasing size, with each card worth various points. It is a mix of Scrabble and gin rummy. I am hoping to teach this game to students in order to improve their spelling and vocabulary, and as a reward for working hard in class. I will need 16 sets of cards for this to work and was hoping for donations from parents. Quiddler is available at amazon.com, Toys R’ Us, and at various other stores and websites that sell games. Here's the link for Amazon.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!! Kate Davis (7th/8th Grade Language Arts Teacher)

They will keep your family warm and toasty for years to come... that is, if you remember to write your name on the tag! Sweatshirts can be purchased in the lobby during Tuesday coffee hour (tomorrow I will be there early at 8:00) and Friday mornings before school. Or in April, you can buy them from Megan if you can track her down (don't bug her before then, please!). Adults sizes M-XXL in black, royal & red and cost $25. Playground Concept Unveiling Next Wednesday: Join the Playground Steering Committee next Wed., March 23, in the cafeteria, from 6-8:30, for the ta-da! big unveiling of the concept for our renovated playground. Meet the architect, ask questions, share the love. Pizza and drinks provided; students welcomed!!

Did you know that by buying gift cards and using them for your weekly shopping, you help raise money for our wonderful school? Scrip brings in about $5,000 a year. That's money that could be used to buy classroom supplies! And all you have to do is spend your money differently. Easy as pie!

I'm at the table in the front of the building every day, Tracy is there on Thursday afternoons and I bring the box to FOSB meetings. If you don't normally come in to the building, feel free to e-mail me and we'll figure out a way to connect.

We currently have Fred Meyer/QFC cards for $50, $100, $200 and $300. Safeway for $100, PCC for $20, Starbucks for $10 and $25.

Have a great week! Suzanne Waller suzaroo@gmail.com

ROCK FER FOSB

Mark your calendars for another semi-annual evening of Salmon Bay parents rockin' the joint: Rock Fer FOSB 10, Saturday night, April 30th at the Ballard Eagles! To celebrate this milestone we're shaking it up a little by having the first ever Salmon Bay Rock-A-Roke. What does that mean? It's a chance for all you closet and shower singers to share your talents with a live back-up band. The RFF House Band is putting together a book of favorite rock and roll songs so that you can step up to the mic and get your fifteen minutes of fame. There will also be a chance for guitar players to sit in on a few songs. If you're interested in participating and you like to plan ahead, send an email to vida@seanet.com and we'll get you the list of songs in advance. If there's a song you're dying to sing, let us know. Or just show up that night and pick a song from the book, just like karaoke, but live.

We'd like to open the evening with a few sets from musicians who have yet to play at Rock fer FOSB. There are so many talented folks at Salmon Bay. Any bands, duos, solos ready for prime time? We'd love to have you play. Let us know.

Playground Open House: Wednesday March 23rd, 6:00 – 8:30 in the Cafeteria

I’m a Math professor at the University of Washington, and this is the second year in a row that I organize public math lectures for Seattle area middle school students. The lectures are free and open for any middle school kid (and parents and teachers) willing to sit through an hour of an interactive math talk on a Sunday afternoon. We are trying to get more kids excited about math and show them how many interesting things it can lead to.

This year we’ll have three lectures - in March, April and May – all happening on Sunday afternoons, at the University of Washington. The first one is on March 13th.                  We put a lot of effort into this and we would like to reach as many kids as possible, especially the ones that we don’t have a chance of reaching by word of mouth through colleagues and friends.

I include below a short description of the first lecture. We have lots of additional information on our website: http://www.math.washington.edu/~mathcircle/mathhour/

Thank you very much for your help! Julia Pevtsova, University of Washington,Department of Mathematics.

ECOLOGY YOUTH CORPS

The EYC is responsible for cleaning up our community green spaces, while getting paid for it. You can go to www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/swfa/eyc/nwro.html or talk with Anthony for more information and an application. The application deadline is April 5th.

The new dates for Open Enrollment are March 15 - April 15. Significant changes in transportation service for next year are under consideration, with a decision expected at the Feb. 16 School Board meeting. The Transportation Department will be sending out letters notifying families about students' transportation eligibility for next year. Open Enrollment is being extended to give families more time to consider whether these proposed changes will impact their choices for next year.
