PRINCIPAL’S NOTE
DearSalmon BayFamilies:
Have a wonderful time with your family during our upcoming mid-winter break. I hope you have time to get off the busy schedule and do something fun! We’ll see you back first thing Monday morning on Feb. 27.
We still do not have the final word from the district / state regarding the end of the year. We are waiting to see if the district application to have 2 snow days waived is approved. If it is, we will end school as usual on Wed June 20….just around the corner.
Take care,
Jodee
ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
Hopes, wishes and needs for you this week
HOPE– I hope you all get a chance to check the lost and found before Friday, when it will head to it’s new home at the Ballard Food Bank, courtesy of some helpful brownie/girl scouts.
HOPE– I hope that all who have noticed that their family information was sadly omitted, misspelled or misprinted from this year’s directory have contacted me to give me the correct information. A directory addition page will be coming to you later this week.
HOPE– I hope that everyone knows that our auction team is in the acquiring stage of their event. They are ready for donations of all sorts. Our best donations come from our families in the form of creativity and fun. One family donated 50 delivered prefilled water balloons. How great is that
WISHES - I wish I was a better speller so I could have gone head to head with the top talent of our recent adult spelling bee. Congrats to Donna Mack and thanks the bee crew, Anna, Robin, Cameron, Mike, Alice, Lance and Drew for a fun evening. Thanks for helping raise over $600 for the general fund of FOSB.
WISHES- I wish that our whole school could fit into our cafetorium/stage area to see the talents of our 4th/5th graders performing Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, with a Motown Twist. Friday morning sing will not happen this week, but plan to stick around for some funky music and some delightful iambic pentameter courtesy of Brian and Nicolette’s classes, Jan Wilson, Judy Bierman and the fantastic sounds of the Shakespeare band
WISHES– I wish that all the fantastic covers that came in for the elementary yearbook could be used for the front cover. A panel of semi – professional judges (mom’s and dad’s) are evaluating the fabulous artwork and winners will be announced upon our return from break. Thanks to all who participated. We are blessed with talent for sure.
NEEDS– We need help in a tasty sort of way. March 1st will be our one and only EVENING TOUR for the elementary and middle school staff. We typically provide a tasty dinner for the staff, brought forth by the creativity of our parents. Would you be willing to bring a dinner type dish for our staff on Thursday March 1st, starting at 4:30 PM. Email me if you can.
NEEDS– We also need a few morning treats, if you are a morning treat type baker, for a group of parents that are coming in for our Middle School Career Day that is happening on Feb 27th. Professionals from all sides of life will come in and share some of the characteristics of responsibility, work ethic, autonomy, success, challenge and enjoyment of their particular careers with our middle school kids. We would like to give them a mid morning snack to keep them going. Email me if you can donate a treat. Thanks in advance.
Thanks to all of our terrific tour guides. Their pride in our school would make you proud.
Enjoy the break everyone. See you upon our return. Megan
MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
HelloSalmon Bayfamilies! Here is your weekly bulletin chock full of important information!
Thanks for the tour guides! I appreciate all of you who helped lead tours and answered prospective parents questions. If you missed your opportunity to be a tour guide, we have one more on March 9th and I would love a few people to help lead it.
Report cards going home today with your Middle School Student- Remember to ask your student about report cards and if they don't bring one home for you, email Karen in the office and she can help you. (kputnam@seattleschools.org)
Midwinter Break February 20th- 24th- Enjoy the week off and we will see you Monday 2/27.
Treats needed! We have two opportunities to help out and show off your cooking (or shopping) skills. On Wednesday Feb. 29th we are hosting a "Career Day" and are looking for a few parents to bring some treats for our presenters. On Thursday March 1st we have our evening tour and we try and do a potluck dinner for the teachers as they need to stay here and lead tours in the evening. If you are willing and able to help out with either of these please reply to this email. Thanks!
WEP #6 and end of season BBQ at Snoqualmie Summit- It is hard to believe this is our last week of Winter Enrichment! I need about 5 more parents who are willing to help out at the Bar-B-Q at the summit to celebrate the end of skiing and snowboarding. Please reply to this email if this is something you can help with. Thanks to all the parents who have helped with all the WEP programs this year and made it possible to do such fun things. We couldn't have done it without you!
Elementary Shakespeare Play- If you get a chance to see the 4th/5th grade rendition of "The Tempest" you will not be disappointed. These shows are always fabulous, fun and contain really great music. See the calendar for show times.
Lost and Found going away! Please check the lost and found for any missing items as we will be sending it off to a better place over Mid Winter break.
Spelling Bee fundraiser was a great success- Who knew there were such hard to spell words in the world. Congrats to Donna Mack for being the top speller 3 years in a row and thanks to the spelling bee crew who put on a fun and informative event!
Have a wonderful week and I hope it is relaxing and filled with your favorite things.
Take care, Caitlin
ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION
GUITAR NEEDED FOR 6th GRADE ELECTIVE
Got an old but playable guitar lying around the house that you’d rather have played than gathering dust? Would you be willing to loan it to the Salmon Bay School guitar class - with the understanding that having it played by middle school students could alter the looks & playability? [While every effort would be made to protect all instruments, stuff happens!] Contact Jon at jeolver@seattleschools.org if you’d like to loan or donate a guitar, or if you want further information.
8TH GRADE PROJECT UPDATE
Students should continue collecting resources and adding to their note cards in preparation for beginning to write. 100 notecards plus 10 source cards are due after midwinter break. All students should have checked their 30 original notecards with Melanie by now so that they are clear about the format; they are recorded on the Source under Projects and Presentations.
This week's lunch meeting and mini lesson will focus on writing interview questions. We'll write several questions together and then students with similar topics can work together to develop the remaining questions. A minimum of 10 questions is required and they must be open ended questions that cannot be answered with a yes/no answer.
Calendars were handed out at last week's meeting and are available from Melanie in room 317 or in the Files box on the Source class page.
SPRING PLAY AUDITIONS COMING NEXT WEEK
Auditions for the spring play The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, Monday Feb 13 and Tuesday Feb 14, after school in Room 306 (Glyde’s Room).
Performance dates are May 3, 4, 5. We need cast and crew. Scripts are available for perusal.
There is even room for the very talented and very brave elementary student, so… come one… come all!

Auction News!!
Our growing catalog of donated items is on the web as we get them: http://salmonbayschool.maestroweb.com/ check 'em out!
You can donate on that site,or through the Salmon Bay school website's Auction link. http://www.salmonbayschool.org/auction
A printable document is there as well.
Like us on facebook if you hang out there. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Salmon-Bay-School-AnnualAuction/200623706680975
We need your donations! Do you have something totally awesome that you just don't need? Donate it!
Do you have a cabin or time share? Donate! Do you have a special skill that someone else might think is pretty neat? Donate! Do you have a business that can offer services or items? Donate!
Here is what we still need help with:
1. Someone to run the Fund A Need portion of the Live Auction. We won't know what we'll be funding
specifically until after mid-winter break, but a general "getting ready to think about it" can happen now.
2. Someone to set up the Live Auction. This includes preparing displays, setting up displays and more.
Please e-mail me if you are able to step in to any of these, or have questions about them.
WINE GRAB INFORMATION:
For those of you who are wine lovers and want to share your wisdom or know of someone who would love the gift of wine, (you perhaps?) start thinking about this year's Wine Grab at the auction. We are requesting donations of fabulous wines ranging from $10-$30 in value as another great way to support our auction. Dry Whites and All Reds are the most desirable varieties.
This year, we are making a special plea for one or two donors to submit 1 very special bottle, (unexpected luxurious gem) to be discovered by one or two very lucky bidders.
You can donate in three ways at your convenience. Please be sure to fill out your donor information on the clipboard including why your donation is special. (point rating, description etc.)
To Megan at the school
On my porch at my home located at: 7058 13th Ave NW, (1/2 a mile form the school. Corner house at 73rd and 13th. There is a white trashcan on the porch to keep it discrete.)
Or you can call 425-501-8846 and I will pick it up.
This auction item is done in a sign up fashion so you don't have to compete for a bottle in the silent auction manner but, for example, if we have 25 bottles up for grabs, the first 25 bidders who sign up to take a bottle home, WINS! One bottle is a flat $15, it's that simple, and a great way to make sure you don't go home empty handed. Chances are, you are going home with something worth much more.
Happy Grabbing, Hillary Leonard
Dessert Dash Donation:
Looking for a low-effort, high impact way to help out at this year’s auction? Here’s an opportunity for you! We’re looking for volunteers to help stock the table for the ever-popular Dessert Dash. Simply bring dessert for 8-10 folks with you on auction night and hungry bidders will take over from there. What could be easier? If you can help with a dessert donation please be sure to RSVP to Julie Hanon at Julie.hanon@seattlechildrens.org or 206-856-1696.
PARENT INFORMATION EXCHANGE BOOK CLUB- March 2nd
Second P.I.E. book club night Friday, March 2nd
We had a great time last Friday discussing “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” at Zara’s house. Next month, on Friday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m. we’ll be discussing “Free Range Kids” at Karine Dammer’s house. Lenore Skenazy’s book about giving our children the freedom to take risks raises pointed questions about modern parenting - why don’t kids just play outside anymore? Are our kids over-scheduled? the world is safer than ever so why do we worry so much? when should we worry? does society judge parents - especially mothers -who let their children take risks? what kind of risks are we more willing to allow, physical, emotional, academic, professional…? This should be a very interesting discussion. We hope you’ll join us.
Please RSVP to Zara Kublin at zkublin@hotmail.com or (206) 276-2831
From Legislative Chair: FOCUS DAY – FEBRUARY 20th – Monday, Capital Bldg, Olympia
Charter school bills are still making their way through the legislature. If you oppose the introduction of charter schools in the state of Washington, please contact your representatives and the governor as soon as possible.
Teacher evaluation bills are also looking like they will come up for a vote. Of particular concern is Senate Bill 5896 which would base teacher evaluations largely on students’ standardized test scores. Your legislators need to hear from you on this! Our kids are not a test score and neither are our teachers.
Monday, February 20th (Presidents Day) is Focus Day at the capitol. This is a day to rally for public education, talk to your representatives, and tell them we demand they support public education now! Carpooling will be available.
Contact me with any questions.
