Happy Spring to all,

THANKS to everyone who helped out by bringing a meal, a drink or a dessert last week to delight our teachers and staff who stayed on Thursday night to lead their respective tours.  The spread was beautiful and the staff was thrilled.  There was even enough to treat them on Friday when they had their Professional Development day.  They thank you and so do I.  Your dishes that contained all of that food loveliness is now located outside of my office.

THANKS to all of the tour guides who gently guided the parent groups through our halls these last 3 weeks.  Thank you to the teachers and the students who let us park in their classrooms and watch the learning, the movement and the discussions that were going on those tour days.   

ATTENTION UNICYCLISTS – Those who would like to ride in the Ballard parade this year - training starts the Monday after spring break.  Mr G will start unicycle parade training every day, YUP, every day starting Monday April 5^th at 8:45 – 9:10 in the east gym.  This is not a beginner class, but rather training for those kids who would like to join the parade team.  Pad those shorts and we see on early on Monday.   

5^th GRADE ENROLLMENT -  If you have wondered whether you need to submit anything or do anything for your 5^th grade student to be entered as a Salmon Bay 6^th grade student next year, the answer is no.  Our 5^th graders are automatically enrolled as 6^th grade students.   You will receive information regarding 6^th grade socials and orientations near the end of the year.

THANK YOU!!!  Thank you to all of the parents that volunteered to help with the Middle School Tours! 

The tours were much smaller this year, but the feedback from the families that came to visit our school was great!  Thank you for taking the time to help!

THANK YOU!!!  Thank you to all of the families that donated salads, bread, main dishes, desserts, drinks and set-up and clean-up help for the teachers dinner last Thursday!

The teachers were delighted with the variety of delicious food and enjoyed every minute of the beautiful meal!  They even had a few desserts left to get them through their work on Friday!

All of the food and help was so much appreciated.  Thank you!  (your serving dishes are in the Vol. Coor. office area - Thanks)!

ThANK YOU!!! 8th grade tour guide volunteers!  We had 23 - 8th grade students help with the Middle School Tours!  They did a fantastic job and represented Salmon Bay beautifully!

MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE!  The Spring Middle School Dance is this Friday, March 26th from 1:45 - 3:15.  It looks like we are in good shape for volunteers and snacks!  (Thank you)!

Dear Salmon Bay Families,

On Tuesday, 3/24, the Taproot Theatre will be visiting Salmon Bay to produce two plays for our Middle School and Elementary students.  Our Middle School students will be watching a play title, “New Girl” at 9:15am.  The new girl in school becomes the target of cyber-bullying.  Students will learn about the effects of such bullying and how they can put a stop to it.

The Elementary will be attending a play titled, “Alexander the Dragon” at 10:45am.  A boy notices another girl using the power of being a 5^th grader to harass and intimidate younger students.  This story will teach our students the power of standing up for people who are being picked on.

Volunteers needed for the new Salmon Bay Building and Facilities group. Have you ever wondered what happens to the that School Levy money you vote for every few years? Have you ever looked at something and thought it should be fixed or improved?  Do you have some architectural, engineering or construction experience that you would like to put to use for Salmon Bay? We are looking for any and all parents who are interested in giving some thought and input in to prioritizing the various needs the school building has. We would also like to begin to lobby the school district for future long term building and safety improvements. Please contact me at vocable@comcast.net if you are interested.

 

 

As most everyone knows by now, the old play structure at school has been removed due to safety concerns. Lance Adams is forming a committee to determine what will become of the space. A new wooden structure? Something high tech? More picnic benches? Grass? Trees? More pogo space? The choices are up to all of us.

RETREAT:  The annual retreat will be on April 17^th from 9am – 2pm; location is TBD and everyone (not just the Board) is welcome!

The Friends of Salmon Bay budget committee will be meeting several times in the coming weeks to draft a budget for the 2010-2011 school year. It is anticipated that our needs from the Seattle School District may be unusually high, which means that we may need to make some challenging decisions about how to prioritize our spending. Attention all 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th grade girls: Super Sports Saturday- April 17^th 2010

Troop 1371, a Girl Scout troop who have been together at Salmon Bay for 8 years, is hosting a SUPER SPORTS SATURDAY event for girls who are interested in sports and having fun.  This event is open to all girls, whether you are in Girl Scouts or not.  The day will include stations about stretching, first aid, nutrition, creating a cheer, learning about girls in sports and making your own game.  Your registration cost covers a t-shirt, a patch and a light snack.  This event is the culmination of the Silver award, which has been the focus of this year in Girl Scouts.  Thanks and we hope to see you there.  Parents of the Girl Scouts leading the event will be present the entire time of the event.

Game Day at the Ballard Library -- Every Friday in March  - March 26^th

  3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Ballard Library. We'll either be in the conference room right by the entrance, or in the Teen Area inside the Library (the North East corner of the building). Bring a game, or a friend, or both, if you are so inclined. There are many games to choose from at the Library.

Seattle Canoe & Kayak Club Open House

Join the Fight Against Cancer: Greenlake Relay for Life, June 12-13!

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing, annual event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. In our community's fun, family-friendly event, teams of people camp out at the Lower Woodland Park track by Greenlake and take turns walking or running around a track or path.  There are numerous ways to participate, ranging from making a small donation, to starting your own team.  For event info and other ideas for getting involved, please visit www.greenlakerelay.org.  Together, we can make a difference and save lives!

Description  As more and more children attempt to take charge with their parents and teachers, we experience the tremendous challenges that come from having lost our place of natural authority in relationship with our children. When children succeed in taking the lead, they become increasingly difficult to parent and to teach. We, the adults responsible for them, become depleted, and no matter how much we do for our children, it never seems to satisfy. When children take charge, they are also robbed of the conditions they need to mature and realize their full potential. The solution lies not in parenting tips and techniques but in clearly understanding where we have gone off track and then restoring the relationship to its proper context.

Based on the groundbreaking work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, a Vancouver based clinical psychologist, (Hold Onto Your Kids) This lecture will identify the signs of an inverted relationship and explain how to resume your rightful place in your child's life. Cindy Leavitt will discuss these principles in depth and clarify how we can incorporate them into our daily lives with children of all ages.

Spring and Summer Day Camp Opportunities

Can trees really communicate?  Can you learn the ancient ways of the water people?  Can you discover the secrets of the Lost City?  Are you a member of the Tribe of the Hand?  What if Bigfoot is real?  Does another world really exist?

These are the questions from which adventures arise.   Take a heroic journey with Terra-Forma Education’s Eco-Quest Spring and Summer Day Camp.  Youth ages 6-10 become immersed in complex stories, based on myths and legends, that develop around them. Along the way they will meet characters, find and follow clues and work together to complete their journey.
