PRINCIPAL’S NOTE
Dear Salmon Bay Families:
Good bye to an old friend who served us well…….. our old (smaller) play structure has finally failed the test, and is no longer safe. Currently it is marked with a sign and yellow caution tape until the district can come and remove it. PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO YOUR STUDENT, AND REMIND THEM NOT TO CLIMB / PLAY ON IT BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL. (During school hours our playground supervisors will also remind them.) You may be wondering what we will do with that empty space….eventually, after we get through the school budget cycle this month, we can meet with parents to discuss next steps.
BUDGET: It’s that time of year, and you are undoubtedly aware that Seattle School District is again facing a budget shortage. We have received our funding for next year, and will have to make cuts at Salmon Bay, but I think we can remain mostly in-tact, with some re-organizing, and a few smaller cuts. As soon as the BLT approves the budget, I will send out better specifics and particulars. I’m sure we will use our usual resourcefulness to continue as much as possible with the best that Salmon Bay has to offer.
Have a good week.
Jodee
ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
Tours – Thanks to the tons of tour leaders who trekked to & fro last Tuesday. Tomorrow: take two for tour time.
Snoose Junction – Cooking cramping your crazy over committed week? Come over to community night at Snoose Junction in Ballard, where they contribute cash (10%) to our cool school, when we consume their crazy good pizza.
Middle school tours – 5th Grade Families – Feeling the fancy to figure out when 5th grade turns to 6th grade, what that might feel like for your fine, friendly student? Come refresh your facts at the Middle school daytime tour on Wednesday at 9:30. Bring yourselves and your fun student.
FOSB meeting: This Thursday, think of things you would like to be thought of at the FOSB meeting and join us at 7:00 PM in the thinking place… the library.
Alternative/Option School Fair: Please let those you know, know, that for those who would like to know more information about Alternative/Options schools, there is a family to family fair this Saturday at the John Stanford Center. This event is mainly for folks who are looking at enrolling their student in one of the many alternative schools in the district. The fair includes elementary, K-8 and high school options (including Salmon Bay). More details below.
Photos: Simply phut – At this ph-time, there are not enough photos to phill our phelementary ph-yearbook. We need photos of ph-especially Dorothy, Marian, Dave, Sally, Brian and Nicolette’s ph-classrooms. As well as pix of the Shakespeare play, Social Justice Assembly, Friday Sing, Marimba, etc etc ... Ph-email your photos to Cathy Rundell, at cathy@runcatrun.com. Ph-anks.
Help for Haiti – A small, yet easy way to help our world neighbor in desperate need, is listed below and being organized by our own terrific middle school teacher, Melanie Shelton. Help how you can and email if you have questions regarding our nail clipper drive.
LASTLY: Even though spring sprung last week, winter seems to be showing itself again. If you are wondering where that winter jacket went, check the lost and found which is FILLED with many coats, sweaters, hats, boots, pants, shoes (??’s) and other items that might belong to you and yours.
Thank you for all your terrific efforts for Salmon Bay and our students. Megan

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION
SALMON BAY SCHOOL HELPS HAITI
Want to help the people in Haiti? Not sure what to do? Salmon Bay School has a unique opportunity to support the field deployment of Dr. Kathy Jobe and her colleagues at the Seattle/King County Disaster Team, supporting emergency medical care for victims of the recent catastrophic earthquake. The team has worked over ten years in the rural community around Jeremie, where many refugees from Port Au Prince have settled. In addition to emergency work, the team provides materials and lessons in public health that directly impact the community. You can make your tax-deductible contribution to the Seattle/King County Disaster Team directly here: http://www.wa1dmat.com/
All proceeds will provide urgently needed supplies for the Haiti trip happening later in March.
Salmon Bay is going to have a nail clipper drive from March 8-18 to support the team’s efforts. Nail clippers help keep hands cleaner and help prevent the spread of infections. Simple, right? But not an easy item to find in Haiti, and quite a small, lightweight item to pack. The team tries to buy most of their supplies in country to support the economy, and will be assessing what materials they most need and what can still be found in Haiti. We may be able to help with more specific needs such as crutches after they return in April with more information, and we can work on collecting those items for their follow-up trip in the summer. Please send in new nail clippers to your child’s elementary or homeroom teacher by Thursday, March 18, and let’s see how many nail clippers we can send to Haiti!
