PRINCIPAL’S NOTE
Dear Salmon Bay Families:
WEP – Middle School Winter Enrichment Program. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you that helped make this year’s Winter Enrichment Program such a great success for students. That includes those of you who volunteered on the mountain, with traffic control at the building, with logistics, with supporting our in-city programs, and for sending your student ready for their experience every Friday. I’m sure you also join me in thanking the teachers for all their extra time and effort, as well.
More help? The tour season is about to begin, and I know Megan and Jessica could use help, if you still have some extra time.
I hope you feel refreshed and renewed from your mid winter break in the regular school routine. Please remember as we get started up again to observe the drop off and pick up protocol of moving in only one direction on 18th Ave, and not parking cars during that time in the zone.
Have a good week.
Jodee
ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
This week brings with it Cheers, Dears and Tears –
CHEERS – to all of you who voted in the levy, help get the vote out, passed the word along about the importance of this past levy… thank you.
DEARS – Dear helpful elementary friends. I need you to help me lead the upcoming elementary daytime tours. They happen on Tuesdays, March 2nd/9th/16th and will begin at 9:30 and end at around 11:00. You job as guide is to help bright eyed and interested parents with general questions and offer your experience as a Salmon Bay parent. I will provide you with necessary details regarding assignment plans, bussing and enrollment. I need at least 5 guides per tour.
Your friendliness and helpfulness is most valuable during these tours. Email me if you can help.
Thank you kindly, in advance, for helping with this very important piece of Salmon Bay.
CHEERS – To Shawn’s class and everyone who donated socks. The results have been terrific and greatly appreciated. If you meant to donate socks and forgot, there is a basket outside of Shawn’s class, which is still accepting clean and hole free socks.
DEARS- Dear boxtop loving friends. Do you constantly rip those boxtop off all the boxes and promise you will deliver them to school, so we can turn them in and receive some $$ for our school? Well this week is the week to turn them in – next to the scrip table.
TEARS and CHEERS Well tears for us but cheers for him. Our friend and helpful custodian, Alfredo Farinas, received a promotion and has moved along to another school. His last day was Feb 12th. We will miss his gentle and kind ways and we wish him the best of luck and hope to see him back at Salmon Bay one day soon.
CHEERS – To the PIE committee for setting up another opportunity for our parent group to listen to Julie Metzger, well respected RN from Children’s Hospital. Her upcoming talk on body image is one week from today at 7:00 (March 1st). The talk is geared for families of 4th-8th graders, but all interested parents are encouraged to come and listen. Julie Metzger is a terrific presenter, with helpful information for parents of any age students. Hope to see you there.
Welcome back from Midwinter break – only 5 weeks to go until Spring Break !! Megan
MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
Thank You WEP Volunteers!!!!! We could not have done it without you!!!! Every week we had about 75 parent volunteers helping with parking, traffic, bus zone unloading, office duty, chaperones, ER drivers, volunteer helpers, and BBQ volunteers! Thank you all! The Winter Enrichment Program is such a great opportunity for our kids! Thank you for taking the time to help make it happen!!!
High School Night! Is on Thursday, March 4th at 7pm! This night is meant for 8th graders and their parents!!! (However, 7th graders and their parents may be interested in this information too). Salmon Bay students need to come with a parent! The schools that will be represented are – Ballard, Center, Garfield, Ingraham, Nathan Hale, Nova, and Roosevelt. The format will be a little different this year. We will begin in the library with an introduction from Jodee and some general information. You will then be able to go into a classroom to learn about one or more of the high schools. We will have students and their parents here to talk about what High School is like at their school. We hope this new format will be helpful, particularly with the new Student Assignment Plan in place.
WEP Payments Due! Please send in those last WEP payments. If you have any questions, please contact Jerri Harden - jlharden@halcyon.com

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION
PIE NEWS: UPCOMING EVENT MONDAY MARCH 1st, 7:00
PIE (Parent Information Exchange) presents-
In the Mirror: How Our Children See Themselves - A not to be missed talk by Julie Metzger, RN, MN March 1, Monday 7-9pm-Salmon Bay Cafeteria Free, refreshments served
Parents play an important role in how children see themselves. Since many children are unhappy with what they see in the mirror, Julie Metzger RN, MN will explore with us the sources of influence on our kids: peers, media images, but most importantly of all, parents. Julie Metzger RN, MN will facilitate a discussion on body image for children, bringing examples from her work. She will address how we impart our values for younger children as well as with pre-teens and teens. This talk is aimed at parents of K-8 students.
Coho Kidstime is offering childcare for this event, with the cost picked up by the PIE Committee (thank you PIE). Please reserve a spot, if you need one, by this Friday at 297-7764
MISSING FROM WINTER ENRICHMENT BUS ON FEBRUARY 12th:
Did anyone find an IPod Touch on bus #2? I lost my Ipod Touch on bus #2 on Friday, Feb. 12 (last day of skiing before winter break). If you found it, please drop it off at the school office and I'll pick it up there. Thank you! William Jensen
FROM NURSE JULIE:
This is an important reminder for parents:
If your under-10-year-old child received the first dose of H1,N1 vaccine, be sure they get the second dose so they're fully protected. The initial vaccine "primes" the system and antibodies begin to develop that provide protection against the virus and the second dose brings immunity up to near-full protection. The doses should be at least 4 weeks apart. Recent surveys show that only a small percentage of children are going back to receive their much needed second dose. The H1, N1 influenza virus is still out in the community so I encourage you to all get vaccinated as this is the only known protection against the H1, N1 virus. Thank you for your continued support of the ongoing response to the H1, N1 outbreak.
An opportunity from the local health community:
Free Dental Examinations: Dr. Lina Kim of Seattle is pleased to offer your child a free comprehensive dental examination on Thursday March 4th, 2010 in support of the Washington Oral Health Foundation Boys & Girls Club Initiative. The examination will include a cleaning, fluoride treatment and x-ray. All procedures will be done by Dr. Kim, at her office located in Magnolia at 3150 West Government Way, in Seattle 98199. In addition, your child will receive instruction on how to prevent dental disease and how to maintain good oral health.
All treatment on the first appointment will be provided at NO charge to the patient.
If you have questions, please call Ruth at 206-448-1914 and she will be glad to discuss this program with you.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA NEWS:
THE WIZARD OF OZ IS CALLING… PARENTS WE NEED YOU!!
I am looking for a set designer, a choreographer, a costumer and a pianist to accompany singers in rehearsal. We begin rehearsals the week after Feb break but I could use the accompanist for auditions Feb 9 and 11 too.
Please let me know if you are interested in any of the above.
Thanks! The Wizard. Glyde Hart King – 252-1773 – ghking@seattleschools.org
BOX TOP NEWS:
Did you know that our school has been collecting box tops, those nifty little box top for education coupons that come on a variety of cardboard packages and we receive a dime for each of those nifty little box tops. There is an expiration date on those nifty little tops and a dedicated and diligent mom has been cutting and collecting those nifty tops and has found that we have until March 1st 2010 to send most of them in. If you have those box tops floating around your house, would you drop them in our box top/receipt box next to the scrip table, preferably cut on the red line. We are have enough tops at this point to receive over $150. Imagine what we would have if you cleaned out your pockets.
Thanks for your help and support in this way and remember we will continue to collect the box tops after March 1st for the next turn in period. (PS. We also collect receipts from Ballard/Greenwood Markets).
UPCOMING ADULT SPELLING BEE:
So you think you can spell? Have you heard the buzzing in the halls? It’s pre-bee excitement! Who knew people were waiting to compete in a bee, listen to great live music, and have fun with their friends–all at the same time? This adults-only fundraiser is happening on Saturday, March 13th, at 7pm. Here’s how it will work:
The first round is a written, qualifying round of 20 words, and it’s open to all paying contestants ($10 fee).
Live music by Zoinks! will be followed by a traditional (oral) spelling bee.
The top 20 contestants will participate in that oral bee, with the chance to buy back-in once for a misspelled word.
We’ll top off the evening with more live music from The Buckets!
All proceeds benefit Salmon Bay. $50 cash prize to the top speller, and prizes for 2nd and 3rd place winners. Cash bar. Donations accepted at door. Mark your calendar: Saturday, March 13th, 7pm-11pm, at 2007 NW 61st St. (the funky old church with the tricycles on the porch). Questions? SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL TOUR INFORMATION:
In the new assignment plan, high school students can actually choose to go to another school not in their assigned area. Ten percent of seats for each incoming 9th grade class has been set aside for students who are requesting that school even though it isn't in their assigned area. In the school district jargon, this is called "10% open choice". Hence the tours are also for students who want to apply to non-option schools out of their assignment area.
Seattle Public Schools will hold open houses at every high school in the next few weeks. The visits are aimed at helping parents learn more about schools in their attendance area, as well as option schools open to their students under the School District's new student assignment plan. Weeknight open houses will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday open houses will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, unless otherwise noted in the schedule. For interpretation services, please contact the school three days before the scheduled open house date. Many of the open houses will include a formal presentation, so parents and guardians are encouraged to arrive at the beginning of the event.
Below is a table of the scheduled open house tours. For more information on day time tours, please refer to your student’s assigned school website.
