Hello families! Hope you all had a lovely weekendJ

What we worked on last week (information in the narrow boxes is repeated on a weekly basis)

Science
We continued our solids and liquids science unit and experimented with different objects and determined why certain objects float vs. sink. We also figured out how to make a sinker (ball of clay) float, and to float with cargo.

Word Study
We completed our latest word study assessments and will begin a new unit this week.

Please remind your child that should they have any, that they need to practice all their “words to learn” each week at home by pointing and saying the letters of the word, then writing each word at least 4 times each.

Math

2nd graders practiced part-and-total number stories, change number stories, finding distances on the number grid, finding the cost of 2 or more items, and practiced fact triangles.

Please be sure to have your child continue practicing their fact triangles at home 2-4 times per week. In addition, please remember to have your 2nd grader play the EveryDay Math Online games we’ve learned so far this year for extra practice.

3rd graders continued working on measurement (US Customary and Metric), for determining perimeter, area, circumference, and diameter.

Please remember to have your 3rd grader practice one to two pages out of last year’s volume 2 second grade math journal, as well as the recent games we’ve learned in class on EveryDay Math Online.

Field Trip

We will be headed to SAM on Wednesday, February 24thWe are in need of one more driver for at least two kids. The following people have volunteered to drive: Julie Pearson (4), Dorothy Hauser(Lucy’s Grandmother), (5) Michelle Tookey (5), Jen Millen (w/Lisa Coleman’s Van?) (5), Elena Lamont (5).

A Note From Shawn’s Class

Dear Salmon Bay Families,

Shawn’s class is collecting socks for the Ballard Food Bank*. Our class has made two trips to the food bank so far, and while visiting there we learned they needed SOCKS!!!! Socks help keep people warm.

Socks get holes fast and unlike us, the clients of the Ballard Food Bank don’t have lots of socks at home to choose from. It turns out the food bank is always low on socks. This is because socks are worn out quickly, unlike a shirt that lasts a longer period of time. Socks help keep people warm.

The Ballard Food Bank serves and helps people in the Ballard area only. Every week The Ballard Food Bank serves a little more than 1,000 people coming to get food and supplies, which is about 5,000 people per month. The Ballard Food Bank is within walking distance from our school. The Ballard Food Bank needs a lot of SOCKS!!!! because SOCKS!!!! are important to Ballard Food Bank clients.

SOCKS!!!! keep people warm. The homeless or people who are going through a hard time don’t have a warm comfortable place like us, in our homes, so they need SOCKS!!!! to help them feel warm. You don’t have to be homeless to go to the food bank. There are many reasons why you might go to the The Ballard Food Bank: your house might have burned down, you could have lost your job, you may have big medical bills to pay, your house could have flooded, etc. When disaster strikes, The Ballard Food Bank is there to help us.

People tend to give things around the holiday, but the food bank needs stuff all year long. It would be wonderful if you could help us by helping your child donate SOCKS!!!! at school.

The socks that your child brings in can be lightly used or unmatched socks or new socks. Please make sure they have no holes and are not worn out.

For elementary students (K-5th grade), we will be collecting socks this week. There will be laundry baskets in the foyer and right outside our classroom, where you can deposit the socks you bring in. Our sock collection will end on the Friday of our school’s Valentine’s Day, February 12th.

We will make sure all the socks you donate get to the Ballard Food Bank over mid-winter bank.

(The Ballard Food Bank also needs shoes that are in good shape, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, gloves, and men’s clothing. – Feel free to put these clean, lightly used items in our laundry baskets as well.)

THANKS for your help!!!!!!!
