PRINCIPAL’S NOTE
ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE
Things to enjoy before heading off to your midwinter break
**The fact that you have found some place to send your socks that don’t match or don’t fit anymore. Shawn’s class has collected over 300 pairs of socks for the Ballard food bank and they are still collecting. There are kids with baskets in the mornings by the doors and baskets without kids in the front lobby awaiting your clean and hole-free socks. This is a great way to support our neighbor, the Ballard Food bank and a great opportunity for Shawn’s class to understand the age old parent challenge of matching white socks.
**The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare play is this week and brought to you by the 4th and 5th graders of Brian and Nicolette’s classes. The music, the singing, the costumes, the dancing,
the adult back up band, the marimbas – all woven around language that really makes you listen and think (… now what did that mean?) All elementary classes will be treated to a daytime performance with two evening performances happening Wed and Thursday night at 7:00 PM. Hope to see you for the fun.
**This one is a carry over from last week’s Peace and Social Justice assembly. Thank you to our special teachers who weave the concept of peace and social justice through our children’s day and their vocabulary. Between the presentations and the songs of peace, between the strength of powerful words and beauty of how the kids said it, the peace and social justice assembly shows us all, in the words of Mary K and her remarkable singers, “whose gonna change things??? WE THE PEOPLE”
**Check out below about our super successful chess club. Wow and way to go.
Have a terrific week and a fun break. Megan

ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION
FROM NURSE JULIE:
This is an important reminder for parents:
If your under-10-year-old child received the first dose of H1,N1 vaccine, be sure they get the second dose so they're fully protected. The initial vaccine "primes" the system and antibodies begin to develop that provide protection against the virus and the second dose brings immunity up to near-full protection. The doses should be at least 4 weeks apart. Recent surveys show that only a small percentage of children are going back to receive their much needed second dose. The H1, N1 influenza virus is still out in the community so I encourage you to all get vaccinated as this is the only known protection against the H1, N1 virus. Thank you for your continued support of the ongoing response to the H1, N1 outbreak.
An opportunity from the local health community:
Free Dental Examinations: Dr. Lina Kim of Seattle is pleased to offer your child a free comprehensive dental examination on Thursday March 4th, 2010 in support of the Washington Oral Health Foundation Boys & Girls Club Initiative. The examination will include a cleaning, fluoride treatment and x-ray. All procedures will be done by Dr. Kim, at her office located in Magnolia at 3150 West Government Way, in Seattle 98199. In addition, your child will receive instruction on how to prevent dental disease and how to maintain good oral health.
All treatment on the first appointment will be provided at NO charge to the patient.
If you have questions, please call Ruth at 206-448-1914 and she will be glad to discuss this program with you.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA NEWS:
THE WIZARD OF OZ IS CALLING… PARENTS WE NEED YOU!!
I am looking for a set designer, a choreographer, a costumer and a pianist to accompany singers in rehearsal. We begin rehearsals the week after Feb break but I could use the accompanist for auditions Feb 9 and 11 too.
Please let me know if you are interested in any of the above.
Thanks! The Wizard. Glyde Hart King – 252-1773 – ghking@seattleschools.org
BOX TOP NEWS:
Did you know that our school has been collecting box tops, those nifty little box top for education coupons that come on a variety of cardboard packages and we receive a dime for each of those nifty little box tops. There is an expiration date on those nifty little tops and a dedicated and diligent mom has been cutting and collecting those nifty tops and has found that we have until March 1st 2010 to send most of them in. If you have those box tops floating around your house, would you drop them in our box top/receipt box next to the scrip table, preferably cut on the red line. We are have enough tops at this point to receive over $150. Imagine what we would have if you cleaned out your pockets.
Thanks for your help and support in this way and remember we will continue to collect the box tops after March 1st for the next turn in period. (PS. We also collect receipts from Ballard/Greenwood Markets).
AUCTION NEWS:
MS Class Baskets From the Auction: If you were one of the lucky winners of the middle school baskets at the auction, and you don't have a use for the basket itself, you can recycle it back to Salmon Bay to use in next year's auction. Simply return it to school, either to your student's homeroom/classroom, or to a volunteer coordinator, and we'll keep it safe until next year.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL INFORMATION
ELEMENTARY 4th/5th SHAKESPEARE PLAY THIS WEEK: THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
The Comedy of Errors presents a spectacle of pure farce in the spirit of utmost fun and--as the title suggests--hilarious confusion. Two sets of identical twins provide the basis for ongoing incidents of mistaken identity, within a lively plot of quarrels, arrests, and a grand courtroom denouement. One of Shakespeare's earliest dramatic efforts, the play abounds in his trademark conceits, puns, and other forms of fanciful wordplay.

SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL TOUR INFORMATION:
In the new assignment plan, high school students can actually choose to go to another school not in their assigned area. Ten percent of seats for each incoming 9th grade class has been set aside for students who are requesting that school even though it isn't in their assigned area. In the school district jargon, this is called "10% open choice". Hence the tours are also for students who want to apply to non-option schools out of their assignment area.
Seattle Public Schools will hold open houses at every high school in the next few weeks. The visits are aimed at helping parents learn more about schools in their attendance area, as well as option schools open to their students under the School District's new student assignment plan. Weeknight open houses will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday open houses will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, unless otherwise noted in the schedule. For interpretation services, please contact the school three days before the scheduled open house date. Many of the open houses will include a formal presentation, so parents and guardians are encouraged to arrive at the beginning of the event.
Below is a table of the scheduled open house tours. For more information on day time tours, please refer to your student’s assigned school website.
