Principal’s Note

If you are a middle school family, the return from break means the beginning of our Winter Enrichment Program. Even if you are an elementary family, you may want to remind yourself on WEP mornings to give yourself a little extra time. Also: the lower field is CLOSED on those Fridays and used for cars/drop-off, with supervision in the gym from 8:40 till 9:10, but not before 8:40, so please do not drop off before then, because we do not have any supervision available for your child

Middle School: Please be sure your permission and health forms have been turned in. Also, drop off and pick up can be very chaotic at first. Drivers: drop off ONLY on 18th. (On 19th we have to unload school busses, then load up ski busses.) We ask you to drive in the SOUTH DIRECTION ONLY. If you happen to DRIVE north to drop off, you will be asked to go around the block and get in line going south. Also, in the evening pick up parking is on 18th and north of the bus zone only.

Finally, this is a difficult time for our neighbors. I ask you to not only be aware of your own parking, but also help to remind others who may be infringing on a neighbor’s yard or space.

Also: you’ll see more details elsewhere in the bulletin but this is a reminder that there is a question/answer meeting with the head of district transportation tomorrow night at 7pm at Salmon Bay regarding a possible change to an earlier start time next year.

Thanks! And welcome back!

Jodee

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Happy 2010 and welcome back to school. Here are a few to-do’s to do for you.

  • The Auction is right around the corner, actually just 3 short weeks away from this Saturday. The success of our auction comes in the form of our families. What you offer in terms of your time and talent and donations is the strength of our event. Bridget Jennings and Carys Kresny are managing beautifully, as well as their helpers, but what you can do to support them at this point is offer to set-up, offer to clean-up, offer to pick-up, offer to dessert-up, offer to give-up (that nice little Christmas item that you may never use) and of course, offer to show up and dress up and pay up. Invitations should be hitting your mailboxes soon. Thanks for joining in the fun on this great community event.
  • A meeting is planned for tomorrow night to give our community an opportunity to listen to the transportation change and start time change that is currently being proposed for Salmon Bay and TOPS. Many questions are swirling regarding how the grandfathering piece of the Student Assignment Plan will affect Salmon Bay and the current proposal of moving Salmon Bay’s start time back to earlier high school start time. Come listen tomorrow night to Tom Bishop, who is the head of transportation. It will begin at 7:00 PM in the library. Thanks goes to Jane Davies, Robin Lofstrom, Rosemary Daszkiewicz, Kelly Bryant and Jodee Reed for getting this meeting together so quickly over winter break. Thanks also to Tom Bishop for taking time to meet with us and help us understand the reasoning behind this proposed change.
  • Winter Enrichment begins this Friday, so in honor of that wonderful middle school rite of passage… a poem. Be aware, if you care, that if you dare, to park your Belair, on the west side of the stair, in a few days from heare, you will get called, on the loud speakaire, to move your car to a spot that is fair. (what does that mean???) This Friday, many of our middle school kids will be going up to Snoqualmie Pass to begin their Winter Enrichment Ski/Snowboard Program. Anyway, two important parking details to be aware of. The west side of the building will be used for ski buses, once the normal morning school buses vacate the area. For those who usually sneak in and park there after the school buses leave, don’t do it on Friday. Secondly, the lower field will be used as a staging area for dropping off kids and gear, before school starts. There will be parents directing traffic and making sure elementary kids who are walking to school are safe, so remember, Friday morning will include some parking challenges. Be patient and be kind. Thanks.

May the gray not stay, and the rain start to wane. Enjoy your week. Megan

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Hi Salmon Bay Middle School Families! Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

WEP starts this week on Friday, January 8th! Please make sure that all of your students paperwork for their chosen Winter Enrichment Program activity has been turned in! Also, payments for WEP must be made before your student gets on the bus this week.

Parking is always our big issue every year! There are a lot of students arriving with lots of gear! Please be careful and watch for the elementary students coming to school as well!

We will be opening the lower playfield on the north side of the school for MORNING DROP-OFF for WEP skiers and snowboarders.

The drop-off area will be open from 8:40 – 9:15am.

We ask that all drivers please head SOUTH on 18th Ave NW, turn RIGHT into the playfield, follow directions for parking, and when exiting the drop-off area, please make a RIGHT turn only.

This really reduces congestion and increases safety for all of the students.

The playfield will NOT be open at night. It is not lighted and we do not need as much parking at night. (No elementary school).

You may also park on 19th Ave NW, north of the bus zone (by the track and field). And of course you can park anywhere in the neighborhood, but please be careful of our neighbors driveways. We cannot block their driveways, even for a minute!

WEP Updates!

Please check our Salmon Bay School website for any WEP skiing and snowboarding updates! If there are any last minute changes, you can expect a “robo-call”, but we will also post information on our website, on the main page, in the “Hot News” section! Our website – salmonbayschool.org

Thanks!!

Chances are, your family will spend money on one of the following this week: groceries, clothing, movie tickets, pizza night, video rentals, sporting goods, fresh wholesome bread, or specialty coffees. Guess What?

We carry gift cards for retailers that can be used to meet all of these purchasing needs, while also contributing a percentage of each purchase to support Salmon Bay programs. You can also pick up the latest Chinook Book at the scrip table, or from Megan, for only $20; these pay for themselves, and 50% of the proceeds go to the school! Wendy Powell, a Salmon Bay mom, is also carrying the books at her Holman Road shop, Childish Things, so you can stop by the store if you can’t make it into school.

The SCRIP program doesn’t ask that you spend more, just that you spend differently. Listed below are some of the ways you can support the scrip program at Salmon Bay. To buy scrip outside of posted hours, or if you have questions, please contact Alodie Loney: alodie.loney@gmail.com or (206)914.6554.

ELEMENTARY AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES INFORMATION

Softlife After School Classes – Winter Quarter

Hello, My name is Coco Howard. For those families who are unfamiliar with me I am an artist and teacher working in the Seattle area, and I am dedicated to bringing the concept of DIY art, craft, and design into the lives of young people ( you can find out more about my work at http://www.softlifeindustry.com/, and http://softlifeindustry.blogspot.com/ )

I will be offering three classes directly after school in room 206 on the second floor . Classes will begin at 3:35 and end at 4:35, and commence on Monday, January 4th ; Wednesday, January 6th; and Friday, January 8th. Class will be held directly after school on early release days. The classes I will be offering are as follows:

Mondays: Basic creature making class. 125.00 for ten weeks. This price includes supplies and a small snack.

Students will learn basic sewing and needle felting techniques which they will use to create creatures, dolls, and animals of their own design. I will always have examples of my own work on hand as well as specific projects that the students can replicate, but everyone will be welcomed and encouraged to make their own “guys” in their own ways. My goal is always to serve as a facilitator of the unique creative vision of each child.

Wednesdays: Handmade plush business class and installation. 135.00 per quarter ( eleven weeks per quarter). This price includes supplies and a small snack.

This class will be a continuation of last quarters business class, but first timers are welcome to attend. Last quarter students designed and produced one or more plush toys and at the end of the quarter we had an exhibition and sale at a local plush art store. The students earned seventy percent of the sales of their creations and the store took a thirty percent commission. I would like to extend this class for two quarters, with our sale taking place in June. Students who cannot come for the entire twenty weeks can come for whatever period they are able, and payment for the class can still be made quarterly. My hope is to find a space in Seattle where we can build a temporary store for our sale, turning our sales event into an installation. The twenty two weeks should give us enough time to conceive of a store theme, find a space, make the toys, and design the build out for the shop. For example, one idea I have is to build a “sweet shop”, where the baked goods, candies, and other treats are all plush toys. Customers would come to the store and buy plush sweets made by the students. I have a few leads on spaces, but nothing certain yet.

Fridays: DIY fashion and needle felting class 115.00 for nine weeks. This price includes supplies and a small snack.

In this class we will be making alterations, reconstructions, and embellishments to pre-owned clothing, and for those students interested in learning the art of needle felting, or building on existing needle felting skills, I will be offering a number of projects that utilize this simple and versatile craft.

If your child is interested in attending any of the above classes, please email me at softlife@mac.com with your child’s name, class number, contact information, allergy info., and class preference to reserve a space. Checks should made out to Germaine Howard for the amount due and dropped off with me on the first day of class.

Note: I aim to be as flexible as possible. If your child would like to attend a class but can only come for part of the term, he or she is welcome to come and I will adjust the price accordingly. Likewise if they are not able to attend the class of their choice, but are available for another day, they are welcome to attend any other class and I will work with them on their chosen projects.

Below is a list of all the class dates for the fall quarter for your convenience. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

  • Monday class: 1/4, 1/11, 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/22, 3/1, /3/8, 3/15, 3/22

  • Friday class: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 2/5, 2/12, 2/26, 3/5. 3/12, 3/26

MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION

2ND SEMESTER EXPLORATORY CLASS CHANGE FORM AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS ON MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 2010:

The goal at Salmon Bay Middle School is that students take a wide variety of exploratory classes over the course of their three years. This may mean that students aren’t always taking their “first choice” exploratory class. Because schedule changes can be challenging, we will consider making schedule changes if one of the following apply:

  1. Missing a required subject – math, PE, Science, etc.
  2. Assigned to the same class twice during the day – example: you have two math classes during the day.
  3. You want to be in Band.
  4. No class has been assigned to a specific part of the day.

Students can go on the Source and look at their 2nd semester Exploratory class. If your student desires to change their Exploratory for 2nd semester, please have them fill out a schedule change form that are available in the main office. Forms are due to Karen, main office, no later than Tuesday, January 26th.

  1. Fill out the Current Schedule FROM side (meaning the class you want to transfer FROM) in the space provided for the correct period of the day.
  2. Fill out the Proposed Schedule – TO side (meaning the class you want to transfer TO) for the correct period of the day.
  3. After you have finished filling out the proposed schedule change form, you will need approval from the teacher(s) affected. Hand carry this form to the proposed teacher to be initialed, indicating approval into the new class, then to the current teacher to be initialed, indicating withdrawal from your current class.
  4. Take the form home to be signed by your parent/guardian.

Hello, I am with a non-profit organization that has a foreign exchange student at Ballard High.Aries is from China and he’s in 11th grade. Due to a host family emergency, he needs a new host family for the remainder of the school year. He would do very well in a home with younger children. He is a serious student and will be a good role model. He needs to live with a family whose primary language at home is English.Host families are asked to provide a bed and meals eaten in the home, but he will pay for all else including buying school lunches. He has full insurance and there is never any liability to the host family. A local area rep will provide support and activities Please contact janellgregson@yahoo.com for more information or call 425-376-0866.
