PRINCIPAL’S NOTE
Dear Salmon Bay Families:
Thank you for all your help in giving students a fun experience, the costume parade and dance, last Friday.
This week I want to remind you that flu season is in full swing. The health department says that 98% of the flu we will see is probable H1N1, and is still considered a mild to moderate flu, like most seasonal flu. Please remember to keep your students home if they have a fever, and make sure the fever is gone for 24 hours before they return.
We will continue to monitor all the precautions here at school that students have learned with regards to hand washing and sneezing, etc. There are handouts available for you in the main office and parent room---just ask the parent volunteer coordinators, or the office people.
Also, use the Salmon Bay School Nurse's page if you want further information, with links to government and district websites.
Thanks for all you do, and take care,
Jodee

Parents/Guardians just an fyi, the traffic police have been patrolling our area recently. A number of cars parked on 18th were ticketed and a few people have been stopped on 65th. Please pay attention to parking signs around the perimeter of the school. And remember 18th Ave NW is a drop off area. Please pull in going south on 18th to drop off your student. 19th Ave NW is a Bus Load Zone only and there is no parking and/or drop off on that side of the building. Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.

CHAIR RACKS: Thanks to those sturdy folks who tackled a life long problem of a sweet old building like ours. No place to store chairs for events. Well no more. Thanks to Lance Adams, Ed Vesneske, David Steele and others for creating racks, welding them and painting them in such a festive fall color. Wow and thank you. Now onto those dark hallways….
SCRIP COFFEE HOUR: To encourage some fun at our scrip table and to keep Alodie Loney from getting too lonely, we will be hosting a coffee hour on Tuesday mornings at the scrip table starting next Tuesday, November 10th. Stop by for some joe, some chatter, some Chinook book-looking. Starts right after drop off. Bring your own mug.

UGANDAN SISTER SCHOOLS SUPPLY DRIVE – Oct 23rd – Nov 6th
Dear Salmon Bay Community,
For those of you who were around two years ago, when we had our first partnership with the Sister Schools program, we had the kick off assembly last week. Terry McGill and our own former Salmon Bay teacher, Michael Fardella spoke to our middle school students about their program's mission which is to show "...ordinary kids (teachers and communities) that they can have an extraordinary impact on the world around them." Terry showed slides of his own early experiences in Uganda and spoke of his revelations that he could make a difference. Basically, the program connects Seattle based schools with schools and orphanages in Uganda. When students drop off their donations, we try to take pictures of them and put them in a "photo box". Then, when these items are distributed in Uganda, the students who receive them also have a photo taken. Terry and Michael return in the spring to show our kids a slide show of how their donations can greatly affect those in need.
This was the program that two years ago brought six Ugandan children to Salmon Bay. These children were able to personally thank our students for their support and in giving that thanks taught our community traditional songs and dances of Uganda.
Our supply drive started on Friday 10/23 and will wind up on 11/6. Please have your students bring supplies listed below to their middle school homeroom teachers or to a central box in the main hallway. The Sister Schools program accepts new and gently used items for all ages. If you have any question regarding this drive, you can contact Sam Olson at soolson@seattleschools.org or Anna Flory at abflory@seattleschools.org Thank you in advance for your support and donations! Sincerely,
Sam and Anna
SUPPLY DRIVE NOTES and NEEDS:
1. No food or medications (they can't clear customs).
2. Nothing that requires batteries or electricity can be accepted.
3. Any gently used or new school supplies, clothes (all sizes), toys, books (English is the national language), or athletic equipment is greatly appreciated!
4. If you do have a digital camera and you don't mind snapping a few photos and of your kids with their donations and then putting those donations in a separate box, that would be awesome! There are also photos of classes who made big posters or cards for the Ugandan schools and orphanages, and we could just do a class picture.
*PIE (Parent Information Exchange) presents-
THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: THE SOCIAL LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN
A talk by Julie Metzger, RN, MN
November 5, Thursday -Salmon Bay Cafeteria 7PM
Please join us for an enlightening evening with Children’s Hospital lecturer and nurse, Julie Metzger, RN, MN. who has a wealth of experience working with kids of all ages. She has given many entertaining and enlightening presentations to schools and communities in the Puget Sound region and California. She had a standing room only crowd here 2 years ago. She is the mother of three children.
Julie will speak to the topic of our children's social lives and how we can help them navigate the tumultuous waters of friendship and peer pressure. The talk will be appropriate for parents of all ages as she will help link our understanding of the social pressures of elementary kids with the social pressures of Middle School kids and how we can best guide them. We are very lucky to have Julie back to our school. Please come and join the conversation. There will be lots of time for questions.
Light refreshments served with pie and dessert afterwards (we would love pie donations if you have time to bring one).
AUCTION NEWS:
The winner of last week’s get your donation in early - contest is….Cathy Rundell. Enjoy your visit with our super LMP, Julie Nachtway and keep posted below for next week’s contest.
SALMON BAY WINE AUCTION: Once again this year, we’re providing an easy way for you to help with the auction. We are doing a wine auction that has two components. There will be a section of the silent auction that is comprised of bottles of wine and wine-related items. The wine in this section will be extra special bottles with a value of $40 or more. But, we all know that there are LOTS of great bottles of wine that are in the $10 to $40 range. For these bottles, we will do a "Wine Grab" where you buy a bottle of wine for $15 and then grab a mystery bottle of wine that will be valued anywhere from $10 to $40 or even more!
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Of course we need those "specialty" bottles worth $40 or more. We'd be happy to help you de-clutter your wine cellar! Do you prefer bubbly or port? Those work, too! And here's the really easy way -- Donate your favorite bottle of wine that's worth between $10 and $40. What's your favorite bottle that you take to a friend's house when they have you over for dinner? Questions? Call or e-mail Michelle Chamberlain at 206.782.9173 or mvs@chamberlain.net
Ready to donate? Drop your bottle(s)) off at the Chamberlain's house: 7023 22nd Ave. NW (very close to school!). If Michelle isn't there, there will be a wine box on the front porch and a clip board where you can write your information and let her know if you want a donation receipt. She will check the box frequently. Or, Michelle will gladly come to you to pick up your donation. Call or email her for that.
GREAT AUCTION DONATION NEEDS YOUR HELP: Calling all Salmon Bay foodies! Salmon Bay Cooks is compiling a cookbook for the upcoming auction and is looking for your favorite recipes for potluck dishes. Original recipes preferred, if you have a favorite from a book, please include title/author. You can email your recipes to salmonbaycooks@gmail.com or drop them off outside of Carita's room (106.)
PROCUREMENT FORMS: Hard copy procurement forms should be finding their way to your home via kid mail today or tomorrow. The next contest for turning in your form is listed on the form itself.
Get your donation in to us soon and we will enter your name into a drawing for a NEW Salmon Bay Sweatshirt. Great for gardening in. Not sure what might work? Need a procurement packet (complete with stamped addressed envelope)? Ask Lynne - contact info is below.
Remember, we want to make it easy for you!
- Email Lynne@ohana.org with your donation info! Or call: 789-8093 OR
- Bring your physical donations into the volunteer coordinator's office (attach a donor form; there'll be some there) OR
- Donate online:http://www.salmonbayschool.org/parents/fundraising/auction/donor_form OR
- Print the form (attached) and fax it into school (252-1721) OR
- Bring the form into the main office and put it in the auction mail box.
Thanks all you superheroes! This will be fun!

This week we will be sending out Direct Giving mailers to Salmon Bay families. Please give what you can, whether it's a little or a lot, to help make our kids' experience at Salmon Bay the best it can be. this year's theme will be The Salmon Bay Fish Ladder.
