PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

Dear Salmon Bay Families:

Conference dates are coming right around the corner. Your home room teacher will be asking you to sign up for a conference one of the 3 days before the Thanksgiving break. There will also be some evening times if needed.
The curriculum nights we did this month are designed to give you a better idea of the content in your student’s class, and how the year will progress. In elementary, the conferences are an opportunity for you to talk with your teacher about the individual progress of your student, and to ask questions about how things are going. In middle school, conferences are student-led and teacher supervised. This gives the students an opportunity to review their own progress, to inform you of how they are doing, and in the process give you further specifics to continue that conversation with them throughout the year.

I’m sure you realize the many ways you can be involved in your student’s school experience, and conferences are one of the best ways, so be sure to sign up for your date.

Take care,

Jodee

ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NOTE

How can you help this week, you ask? Well yes thank you, you can….
  • Help our terrific art teacher Barbara fill our display cabinets with the Day of the Dead pieces of art that many classes have been working on. Shouldn’t take more than an hour or two sometime this week.   Call me at 252-1730 if you would like to help.
  • Help our procurement team by thinking about what your family can contribute to this year’s Super Heroes Salmon Bay Auction. Items that are donated by families are by far the best sellers, the most entertaining and the most fun. If you turn in your donation before this Friday, Oct 31st, you will be entered into a contest to win a ½ hour massage from one of the fantabulous massage therapists that attend Salmon Bay. Give a gift, help your school, potentially get a massage? Win, win, win situation. See below for all the details.
  • Help your teachers at the Halloween events that will be in your student’s classroom this Friday. Offer to help with costumes in the afternoon, attend the Halloween parade that will happen on the upper field from 2:10-2:30, offer assistance with snack or prep or clean up.
  • Help our yearbook committee with photos. Take advantage of those nifty cameras you own and snap field trip shots, outdoor shots, Halloween shots, morning sing shots. Chess club shots. All photos are appreciated when it comes time to assemble the yearbook. Thanks
  • Help our middle school teachers with your donated items for their Ugandan Sister Schools Supply Drive going on now. Look below for more info. This is a great opportunity to give away those items your kids don’t use anymore and help make a difference.
Thanks everyone for all the help. Thank you too for continuing to send in your enrichment checks.

Don’t forget-early release on Wednesday. Enjoy this truly fall week. Megan

UGANDAN SISTER SCHOOLS SUPPLY DRIVE – Oct 23rd – Nov 6th

Dear Salmon Bay Community,

For those of you who were around two years ago, when we had our first partnership with the Sister Schools program, we had the kick off assembly last week.    Terry McGill and our own former Salmon Bay teacher, Michael Fardella spoke to our middle school students about their program's mission which is to show "...ordinary kids (teachers and communities) that they can have an extraordinary impact on the world around them." Terry showed slides of his own early experiences in Uganda and spoke of his revelations that he could make a difference.

Basically, the program connects Seattle based schools with schools and orphanages in Uganda. When students drop off their donations, we try to take pictures of them and put them in a "photo box". Then, when these items are distributed in Uganda, the students who receive them also have a photo taken. Terry and Michael return in the spring to show our kids a slide show of how their donations can greatly affect those in need.

This was the program that two years ago brought six Ugandan children to Salmon Bay. These children were able to personally thank our students for their support and in giving that thanks taught our community traditional songs and dances of Uganda.
Our supply drive started on Friday 10/23 and will wind up on 11/6. Please have your students bring supplies listed below to their middle school homeroom teachers or to a central box in the main hallway. The Sister Schools program accepts new and gently used items for all ages. If you have any question regarding this drive, you can contact Sam Olson at soolson@seattleschools.org or Anna Flory at abflory@seattleschools.org Thank you in advance for your support and donations!

Sincerely,

Sam and Anna
SUPPLY DRIVE NOTES and NEEDS:
  1. No food or medications (they can't clear customs).
  2. Nothing that requires batteries or electricity can be accepted.
  3. Any gently used or new school supplies, clothes (all sizes), toys, books (English is the national language), or athletic equipment is greatly appreciated!
  4. If you do have a digital camera and you don't mind snapping a few photos and of your kids with their donations and then putting those donations in a separate box, that would be awesome!  There are also photos of classes who made big posters or cards for the Ugandan schools and orphanages, and we could just do a class picture.

Library Notes
Fall has fallen, and we’re celebrating with over 100 new books! Many thanks to all of you who supported the Salmon Bay Library by making a purchase at last May’s Secret Garden book fair. For those of you new to our school, it’s important to know that the library receives 100% of its book buying budget (and most of the administrative budget) through the efforts of our amazing parent community! FOSB allocates a line item at the budget retreat each spring, and also sponsors two book fairs: A book fair at University Book Store in December, and a book fair here at school through Secret Garden in May. If you are looking for a fun volunteer opportunity, I recommend either (or both!) of these events.

We’ll be sending home the first overdue reminder slips of the year this week, and I want to take this opportunity to remind students and their parents that we never charge fines for overdue materials! (We would only ask a family to pay for a book if that book were damaged or lost.) Some families may be receiving notices for books that were checked out last year. Please look for those books at home! I have been talking to students about designating a spot at home where they can put their books for safe-keeping until they come back to school. We’ve also been brainstorming lists of all the places library books like to hide! If you have any questions about books, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me! (email is probably easiest: laillman@seattleschools.org)

Lastly, if you checked out one of the Earobics reading CDs last summer, could you please check around your computer to see if the CD is still there? One of the cases came back into the library missing its CD. Happy Reading!    Linda

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: THE SOCIAL LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN

A talk by Julie Metzger, RN, MN

November 5, Thursday -Salmon Bay Cafeteria 7PM

Please join us for an enlightening evening with Children’s Hospital lecturer and nurse, Julie Metzger, RN, MN. who has a wealth of experience working with kids of all ages. She has given many entertaining and enlightening presentations to schools and communities in the Puget Sound region and California.  She had a standing room only crowd here 2 years ago.  She is the mother of three children.
Julie will speak to the topic of our children's social lives and how we can help them navigate the tumultuous waters of friendship and peer pressure.  The talk will be appropriate for parents of all ages as she will help link our understanding of the social pressures of elementary kids with the social pressures of Middle School kids and how we can best guide them.  We are very lucky to have Julie back to our school.  Please come and join the conversation.  There will be lots of time for questions.

Light refreshments served with pie and dessert afterwards (we would love pie donations if you have time to bring one).

The auction's coming up more quickly than you think, and we'd love to have those donations in before the holidays start encroaching on your Auction Conciousness. We've asked businesses to donate by November 16, but there's a special incentive for Salmon Bay families to donate or procure before that. SCRIP News!

Chances are, your family will spend money on one of the following this week:  groceries, clothing, movie tickets, pizza night, video rentals, sporting goods, fresh wholesome bread, or specialty coffees.  Guess what?  We carry gift cards for retailers that can be used to meet all of these purchasing needs, while also contributing a percentage of each purchase to support Salmon Bay programs.  You can also pick up the latest Chinook Book for only $20.  The SCRIP program doesn't ask that you spend more, just that you spend differently.  Listed below are some of the ways you can support the scrip program at Salmon Bay.  To buy scrip outside of posted hours, or if you have questions, please contact Alodie Loney: alodie.loney@gmail.com or (206)914.6554.

Buy at School - Stop by the scrip table (located in the front foyer near the office) M-F 8:50-9:20 a.m. or Th/Fri 3:20-3:40 p.m. to purchase scrip directly from one of our friendly sellers.  We have on hand this week:  PCC, Fred Meyer/QFC, Safeway, Met Market, REI, Starbucks, Snoose Junction, Rain City Video (10 punch), Lands End/Sears, Great Harvest Bread, and Regal Theatres (Thornton Place/Meridian).  Bring Cash or Check!

Special Orders:  Great Lakes Scrip Company offers families the ability to submit orders online, reload select cards online, and also use a credit card for payment with the PrestoPay service.  To use this service, go online to www.shopwithscrip.com, register your family with the program, and choose Friends of Salmon Bay Elementary as the beneficiary.  Hundreds of merchants are available for order through the site, and several cards can now be reloaded, including Starbucks.  You can submit your order on paper, I can email you an order form, or you may pick up a hard copy from the scrip table at any time.   The next order will be submitted on Wednesday Nov. 18th, ***( NEW DATE )*** and will be available for pick-up by October 23.

eScrip:  The eScrip program allows you to support Salmon Bay programs with minimal effort!  Simply go to www.escrip.com, securely register your credit cards, debit card, and selected store club cards (club cards require use of account #, not phone #), and designate Friends of Salmon Bay as the group you would like to support.  Now, every time you shop at any one of the hundreds of participating merchants using one of the registered cards, a percentage of your purchase goes directly to the school!

Attention Girls Soccer Players:

For the past few Saturdays one of our girls soccer teams has been playing the girls of Madrona K-8.  They’re a new program, in their second year, with a  terrific group of kids and an incredibly enthusiastic group of parent supporters.  Many of their players aren’t able to afford the basics, including shin guards.  I’ve talked with their coach, and with his permission I’d like to ask any players who might be willing to contribute a small amount and collectively we’ll send them a check so that the whole team can be outfitted with this important piece of safety gear!  If you give your donations to Emma Thomas at practice, she’ll bring the funds home to me.  Thanks in advance.  Rosemary Daszkiewicz.
